It is so wonderful to see how many have been forced to learn reading French thanks to the exclusion of English subtitles on her French DVD:s!

He doesb't like her? Or he doesnt like the way this tour is?

You don't like him or you don't like his opinion about the concert?

I say the second option on both.

Most of us already know the tour's setlist is oughly booring and it got even worse in French. And even though I tend to think that the French fans always get better things than the English understanding audience, the French got an even worse setlist. With so many English tracks it should feel like a mockery to their French pride, and it most surely do.

I don't get that point. Why should french audience feel mockered by the songs setlist? Because Céline sings very few french songs? Then I see no sense on it, because its clearly stated in the posters that the WORLD tour is called Taking Chances, not D'elles or D'eux

I can't stand it. With so many dates for France and any to other places (like Spain) if french media is complaining because she sings very few in french, that will be the last thing I can tolerate  They're enough spoiled, aren't they? :glare:

Celine did say herself, that she took chances with her music but it was still her singing those songs that she hasn't changed inside, she just changed in music. I really don't care if she gets compared with other singers but no one will ever be close to Celine Dion, the one and only, Celine Dion.

At the end of the 1990s, on the impetus of her husband-manager, the little kid from the suburbs of Montréal doubled her French-success with international English triumph. Since then, the fashion for female singers with "big voices"” has declined, just like the sales of the woman who epitomises such singers. The Taking Chances Tour (which started in Feb 2008 and is set to end in jan 2009) does everything it can to showcase (Celine's) vocal ability, in an attempt to give the impression that she sings like she did last century.

Just realised I mis-translated this section:

The critic is not saying that Celine cannot sing the way she did ten years ago. It's less of an attck on Celine's voice and more an attack on the concert and style:

a (slightly) more accurate translation: "The show demonstrates Celine's vocal ability, at the risk of giving the impression that she sings the way people did last century."

In other words, her style is out-dated, and this fits in with the idea that people don't care about powerful female vocalists anymore.

And as for the setlist - there is nothing wrong with it! There are more than enough French songs in there... Celine has not performed these songs for 10 years... We fans might be disappointed because we have seen every Celine performance and know these songs now... but the majority of people in the audience who probably know nothing about D'elles, or don't care for it much, would want to hear Celine sing the songs that she actually song...

So the setlist is boring for us... we can't expect Celine to sing the songs we want to hear at the risk of alientating everyone else in the audience. Yes... I was also hoping for more songs from D'elles but at the same time... this was my first EVER Celine French concert and I have never seen her perform Destin or Je Sais Pas or Ziggy live. These are great songs and I was very happy to get to hear them. I don't think my enjoyment of the show would have been changed much if she had sung On s'est aimé a cause or Immensité.

I keep hearing about how poorly D'elles was receieved in France... so why would Celine choose to sing these songs? In the UK when she sand Shadow Of Love and Fade Away the crowd was decidedly less responsive... that's because very few people knew these songs. And even when My Love was introduced only more dedicated fans cheered!

I think more people in the audience would have been disappointed if they hadn't heard the usual hits. It goes without saying... people go to a concert to hear (for the most part) songs they know... I've been to concerts were I knew very few of the songs and it wasn't much fun.

As someone who had also been hoping for fresher material, I have to say I was not as disappointed as I thought I would be by the absence of certain songs... It really didn't matter... For DVD purposes maybe it is important to have different French songs... but from personal enjoyment of a live show it really didn't matter at all.

Well I y speak only for myself when I state that a tour should be mainly focused towards the fans, coz face it most die hard fans pay this much to get to see her live + some boored rich folks, but hey how do one please them anyway??

So I think it is only fair to say that yes the French concert goers SHOULD know about D'Elles and 1F&4T, if not it's their loss. These albums are have some treachures on them and there is no excuse for neglecting them.

Since when is selling 90% of the tickets available tantamount to a struggle?!

I was among those hoping for a "radically different" setlist in Paris but then who am I to complain if the very people who attended the first 3 dates enjoyed every minute of the show as stated in the fan reviews?

Well after read this post I help myself to add my opinion to this topic. The fact of the matter is Taking Chances is a English Album. English is pretty much the inter national language “Screw the French Critic” :angry2: As for the Songs from her past, I see nothing wrong with throwing some old songs in. They are her signature songs, no one can sing them like she can and the fact that she is married and have a good life should have nothing to due with the songs she sings. Celine brings magic to a song when she sings it makes it believable. Just look at the Taking Chances Album This Time, Just think about the song when she talks about being raped .When her husband brought her this song to listen to she said she couldn’t sing this song. But later change her mind thinking if it only helps one woman out of a situation, she done her job and helped them. Look we are all getting older her nitch age bracket I would say is 30s 50s and her songs should refect our age. I agree she has a wider span then that but her songs reflect our age not teeny boppers or old farts she is not 20 nor is 70. :sofunny: Personal a lot of her songs have touched my relationship with my girlfriend very much as if Celine knows every stage of my relationship with my girlfriend along the way as if she is in third person with us. I think that we do not give her writers enough credit for come up with the songs they do for her

seems like this guy could have written his review without even attending the show.........his opinion was already set in his narow little mind....

i have seen Celine live since 1993 ....and last sat nite the 24th in bercy was her best show i have ever seen ......she was awesome and the French audience loved every minute .....I too had concerns over song choices but all of this just fades away when the woman sings and from where i was it was a sellout and she was truly spectacular ......anyone going to see any shows in the future STOP WORRYING over song choices trust the girl who has melted your heart in the past she will NOT let u down.........so go and enjoy this AWESOME artist !!!!

its just because of the sales of the albums 1f4t, delles and tc, that she chooses to sing old songs...

u noticed in the audience as well... when she sang TLDH, i got the feeling people were like: uh what is this...

the same goes for SOL and FA, it doesnt fit at all...

i've been to 5 french shows, and yes each time it was wonderfull. but it could been better, especially since u know she has amazing amazing new french songs...

and its just stupid people dont hear them... maybe when she do sang those songs, sales would be better ;)

In all honesty, I would have been very disappointed if she hadnt song some of her past work when I seen her Manchester show! We all dont get the opportunity to see her every tour she does and so it's a real treat to get to hear songs like 'Think Twice' and 'Because You Loved Me', songs that she is really known for. She said herself 'Taking Chances' is not for everyone, so why sing every song of it and not what she is really known for, plus the album is not long out! I just think there is no pleasing some people, people don't like her and so feel the need to attack. At least she is actually going around the world, giving people the chance to see her live.

On one hand is true that adult people want to see her sing her famous hits when they are going to a concert. Sure they were looking for TPOL, BYLM and MHWGO on her performances in Las Vegas. No question about that. BUT now she is on a world tour, which is a different show (or it should be supposed to be different) and she should be taking more chances with the songlist  I wasn't expecting a second part of Las Vegas show, but all what we are seeing is like an "A New Day II" -_-

She has now the chance to perform for the very first time songs that she has never sung live in front of an audience, and I'm sure that people would be amazed to listen new songs from her voice, not always the same TPOL and the collection of old hits :) Shall we remember how MANY fantastic songs she has on Celine Dion, The Colour Of My Love or A New Day Has Come that have never been sung? People would be mad to hear them and say "wow, this girl has many more nice songs than BYLM and MHWGO!" ^_^ And that for not to mention the french songs she has always ignored from SSDA, 1F&4T and more recently, D'elles.

For example, whats the sense of including again All By Myself? To show again the world that she can still beat that high note? Toc toc René! we already know, people know, and who cares?. I would prefer cent times to hear something new

Many fans are freaking out with Céline singing My Love on this tour. Ok, its a very nice song and probably one of the best on Taking Chances, but can you imagine her singing Water From The Moon, Next Plane Out, Miles To Go or The Greatest Reward live?. I see those far better than My Love! -_- My God she has dozens of jewels waiting there to be sung at least once in her career! but no way

And why the hell are they doing that Queen medley? Seriously, has she the need to include always a medley of other singers when she has more than 500 songs, many of them never sung live? :frusty: :furious:

I expected a more "risky" repertoire in this so long awaited world tour, but all I see is like a LTAL tour second part. That's why the critic says that they have the feeling of Céline singing like if she was in the past century. Because it seems that few things have changed, she keeps singing the same songs, introducing only a few ones. She didn't toured with A New Day Has Come and it would have been amazing to see her sing this whole album live

If only we had a TV special from each album, presenting the majority or all the songs live on a stage... She used to do that with her first english albums, and even in french, but what happened since 2002? Only a few songs from the album are taken, the rest are all, again, the annoying collection of old hits! :pinch: I would left that "stuck in time" repertoire for when she is 60, but not now...

Well....I just can't see criticizing Celine's song choices when I enjoy all of her songs so much...rehearsed or simply ad-libbed. I think that her true fans are happy to hear her sing no matter what the material may be, and whether it is in French or English shouldn't be that much of an issue......we all know she sings in both languages. If the tour is titled "Taking Chances", I would expect most of the songs to be in English. I don't speak French very well, but I still enjoy her songs in French. I would hope that the French speaking people would also enjoy her English songs as well. :kicking: Rock on, Celine!!! Edited by bkitt

totally agree

celine always say she wants to do the things she love.she says Taking chances album fits her,and she loved the things she did in these years, but we can see in this tour she doesn't really take any chance.maybe it was because of lack of time only two month between new day and tour and maybe she can't really practise and get ready,I think even songlist of new day was better than this tour,I miss the times she really go on the tour of an album remember live in memphis it was all about falling into you album, but we can't name this tour "Taking Chances' tour, cos as you said it is like let's talk about love number two

Hi

I read your article about Céline's show in France.

French Medias weren't nice very Céline since her show in Vegas. And It's true her show might be "too american".....

Let's down. Here, we don't like people who manage to. I told about this with my american singing teacher. When she came in France, she was affraid to find a job because of her musical studies. (now, she lives about music :) )

At Radio, yesterday, all medias were against Céline.

I hadn't got the chance to see her this days, but I saw her leaving her Hotel. She's very nice, patient with her fans.

JEALOUSY is typical French way.

And Ladys & Gentlemen, Barbra Streisand's more classical voice - So perhaps she touches more French Public.

I suppose he kept his look on Céline, when she worked with JJ Goldman. Because It was a great success in France and JJ very appreciated here (all artists dream of working with him).

OK, I'm at my office. I must work

Have a nice day

Im sorry, but who is one critic. Celine cannot be doing too badly if she is performing to sell out shows all over the world. If people did not like her or her song choices then they would not pay the prices to go and watch her perform. I saw the concert in birmingham and she was spectacular. Celine has always done covers in her tours, in the Lets Talk About Love tour she covered hits from the Bee Gees and Saturday Night Fever.

Celine is just amazing, but if we all felt the same the world would be a very boring place and we are all entitled to our own opinions.
