I refused to try sushi simply because it's raw fish, and obviously that sounds revolting. A friend convinced me to try a sushi roll and I was hooked from the first bite. I don't like the plain sushi where they put a piece of fish over rice, but sushi rolls are excellent. I like the more extravagant variety, rather than just fish rolled in rice though. We have THE BEST little Thai and Sushi restaurant here in my town and I eat there about once a week, although it's incredibly expensive. (sushi that is) Quote

Outside of Japan, sushi is sometimes misunderstood to mean the raw fish by itself, or even any fresh raw-seafood dishes.[1] In Japan, sliced raw fish alone is called sashimi and is distinct from sushi, as sashimi is the raw fish component, not the rice component. The word sushi itself comes from an outdated grammatical form of a word that is no longer used in other contexts; literally, sushi means "it's sour." I did not have the one where it's just a raw piece of fish I think I had a California roll which was good. Luckily it was a good place but I always worry about the preparation since it's raw.
