I really like this part of the article that explains why we should not be that awed with Mariah's 18 #1's in Billboard... coz if you look at the bigger picture, more artists Celine on top of the list... have bigger successes around the world than Mariah's US-centric career...

Well what I've always said is, if Céline was an American singer, then she would have had 20 #1 hits... and would be more appreciated

I think Celine is much more bigger than MC, not because I'm a fan of Celine and depending her. I mean, look at some other point. Celine has a legend award. MC has a decade artist award on billboard way back 1999 I think. Celine has a walk of fame she even has a life sized wax statue of her. Now weigh .....

God ..imagine if celine was american....lol.....she would be huge stateside and still in vegas!!! but would she have a european career? And would celine have to appear in dodgy videos like mariah???? .....well am sure of one thing Celine could write better songs than whats on mariahs new cd....i mean even rene charles could do better than some of mariahs new "lyrics"

Carey and her ridiculous shenanigans? I actually find that funny! LOL.

 

I actually agree with that statement... Mariah's career is very oriented in the U.S. Although it can be said Celine has a career that tends to stretch over different lands, Mariah does know her market very well. Though Mariah indeed has fans all over the globe, she tends to cater to the likes of an American audience.

 

From a different angle, Mariah's choices are also reflected in her tours. Mariah is not known for grand scale and extensive tours. When Mariah tours on an international level, she tends to travel to Europe and Japan and it was not until recently that she decided to perform in Dubai, Tunisia, or even Indonesia. Her U.S. tour dates are rather limited as well.

 

Personally, I still think Mariah should have stuck with her "roots" and remained true to her ballads. I know her style is different now and is tinged with R&B and Hip Hop, and though I am not saying that she should not have innovated her music, I believe she would still be more successful if she hadn't changed her original trademark sound.

Well, I'd like to see Celine try. Mariah has written all of her #1 hits in the US except for one. And although I agree that Mariah is mostly huge stateside, it is the biggest music market and the hardest to break into. The USA is probably the only music industry which combines all genres such as RnB, country and jazz. It is a big deal to actually hit the top of the Hot 100 as an artist would be competing with artists of all genres.

Then I can say if Mariah was singing in french she would have had a great succes in Canada and France and other countrys where people speak that language.
