Haha yeah the original doesn't hold a candle to Céline's version! Interesting the lyrics were rewritten here and there. Stevie's version misses the UMPF Céline's version has, even though there's a lot of saxophone and screaming. :giggle:

Since it doesn't look like it was ever mentioned in this thread, If Walls Could Talk was a cover. The original version was released by Stevie Vann (Mutt's previous band-mate and ex-wife) in 1995, and produced by Mutt (they remained friends after their divorce).

 

It's a little different from Céline's version:

Wow, I love version! It’s giving me Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” vibes, but with a lot more grit. Stevie had some great vocals there. I know I’ve heard this before, but thanks for sharing it again!

 

Makes me wonder if Céline heard this version first, or if Mutt had her listen to a revised demo version (with all the lyrical and musical changes already made). Her take on it is so breathy and restrained compared to the original.

OMFG I had completely repressed the memory of buying this album as a teen 😭😭😭 Pretty sure its the only time I tossed a CD in the garbage after one listen :lmao:
