its still an interesting article and the he wrote a whole book about it.......... i think everyone likes celine in a way........ my brother is not into Celine's type of music at all but he has the up most respect for her because she is true to heart.... ( even if some people think shes fake) he even looks some of her songs because she sings from the heart.....

It's an interesting article although his sarcasm is all over the thing. Basically it sounds like he can't admit that the show was not as bad as he had thought it would be and he is truly amazed by that fact. -_-

I agree he has a hard time admitting he had an amazing time. :P It's a proven fact that everyone ends up loving Celine in the end.

Though, I find end a little weird. :ermm:

Thanks for sharing.

I often feel sorry for people who think they're "too cool" to listen to Celine's music, and doesn't give it a chance. So this was interesting.

Celine Dion made the cool and cynical Carl Wilson cry. hahaha By the way, does anyone know if he needed somebody's permission to use the LTAL album cover as HIS book cover?

Thanks, I loved that article. Honestly, his reaction reminds me of my boyfriend's first reaction to the show. I do believe he was dreading it. It didn't help that we were sitting 2nd row center when I took him to see Celine. He is not a fan, and he was only looking forward to the show because he knew it would make me happy. When the concert ended, he turned to me and said, "Wow, can we sit front row next time?" immediately followed by "Don't tell anyone I said that."

I seriously think those Dion girls were us because we sat in the front that night, before Sophie came so it was just the 3 of us. :ninja:

I was enjoying his article at first but I didn't like the direction it took. The fact that his book is called "the end of taste" completely contradicts all the commentary he made in the beginning of his article. The truth of the matter is there is truly no such thing as good or bad music. Music is a piece of art just like a painting is and whether or not it is good, bad, beautiful or ugly is entirely dependent on opinion. Taste is dependent on opinion, psychology, biological make-up and a million other factors. I'm supposed to believe that I have bad taste for being a Celine fan because some elitist 'hipster' who only listens to unknown bands (because success and popularity have somehow turned into the markers of shitty music) says that her music is trite and cheesey? Music isn't only one thing....its many things. It doesn't always have to be about depression or carry some heavy important message. Its ok to want to sing about love, or listen to songs about love.

And on the subject of lyrics, Celine always gets nailed for her song lyrics; how cheesey and meaningless they are. I'll never forget my first visit to a Coldplay forum. Coldplay being one of those bands that are praised for their haunting and mysterious lyrics. Well it turns out that hauting and mysterious is code for "I have no clue what the hell those lyrics mean." I am a HUGE Coldplay fan and decided to visit their forum to find out what Chris' inspiration was for Speed of Sound. After reading tons of posts about the song I realized that no one knew what the hell the song meant, yet the members of the board couldn't stop talking about what a lyrical genius Chris was. What does all of this mean? That the ambiguity of Chris Martin's lyrics is pure genius, or that maybe he just sat down and put together a long string of meaningless phrases that sounded good together. The truth of the matter is that we'll never know. Yet he gets acclaim while Celine gets verbal tomato after tomato thrown at her by every critic (except Chuck) in the world.

So in that sense, what is the point of being a music critic? No offense to Chuck....I think you're great. But whats the point in reading a 'critique' when its truly just one person's opinion? Its not like its some sort of scientific or factual document. At the end of the day its just music and people will like what they want to like; what moves them emotionally or even just what moves them on the dancefloor. We just shouldn't have to be judged and precieved as some sad little losers because we like Celine's music. Why can't people enjoy what they want to enjoy without having to feel shameful about it. Does that mean there isn't music I think is crap? Of course not. I think Marylin Manson is absolute s***. His voice is unpleasant/unbearable/unlistenable, his lyrics are pretentiuos (in a 'im trying so hard to be anti-establishment kind of way) and his music sounds more like noise then actual music. But people like it and I can't ever deny that. To me its not that his fans have no taste...they just don't have my taste and thats perfectly cool with me.

Why do these self-styled smart a$$e$ like to overanalyze Celine's success? She's a vocal talent like NO OTHER! This world may be imperfect but her voice is not.

Is It Wrong to Like Celine Dion?

This article was actually very intersting. I like it a lot. The author was basically saying, that although Celine isn't everyone's type of music, she has a humbleness about her and through her music and it is okay to like her even if her music isn't close to anything else in your CD collection. I think this person actually wrote this article with more of an open mind and understanding of Celine and her music. His experiment was very good. And I think he realized that it is not wrong to like Celine Dion, and that her music goes much deeper than her success.

No-one tells me what I should be listening to! I know what I like, and just because someone else doesn't like it, doesn't mean it's bad. If that is what this guys is saying, and I think it is, then I agree wholeheartedly!

I felt the same way about the article. I ended up ordering the Let's Talk About Love 33 1/3 book because it sounds like it's coming from a really interesting place.

I agree! I don't like how a cultural elite get to define what music is "good" and "bad", in spite of the tastes of millions of listeners. I'm very impressed to read about Wilson questioning this, especially since he is (was?) part of that elite. Here's my favourite quote from the article:

Otherwise your shame just reflects that you're being intimidatI'll definitely buy the book, and I'm even thinking of going to his launch party tonight.ed by snobs who've convinced you your ears shouldn't like what your ears like.

Why don't we feel equally guilty for listening to music we're not sure we honestly like because we want to impress people, for instance?

I'll definitely buy the book, and I'm even thinking of going to his launch party tonight.
