the "key" problem

why.......this question has hunted me for soooooooooooooooooo long

 

she seldom sings her songs in the original key, very seldom, in the concerts or tv shows ect.

 

lets take taking chances and alone for instances, she recently has sung these two songs on tv live, and they were all in lower key

 

why??? can someone answer this question for me?

 

this is kinda frustrating while seeing alicia keys singing her new songs live exactly like the cd versions...

Celine, as we know is also human. she already told us that she doesnt always hit the keys right. and fyi, she has sung Taking Chances on key once! i forgot which performance but it was in the same key as the album one. im damn sure it was live. so cut her some slack, she aint a singing robot

she have no problem with the old song but with the new song she don't work her song before singing also today show & ellen degeneres was very beautiful but american and oprah was not very good she have problem with her tonality at last and she sing a lower tone

OK, seriously, I agree that it's easier to sing in the lower key and she probably just protect her voice a bit or sings the songs in lower key because she doesn't have the time to practice the songs in their original key and to excersize her voice chords...

And actually I enjoy to hear these songs sounding a bit diffrent, not EXACTELY the same as on the album!

I have nothing to complain about the key she uses when she's singing. I admire and love her just the way she sings. And that's enough.

Alicia might sing her songs in the same key because her voice isn't as high as Celine and she doesn't have as much range. When Celine records, it's only like 1 song a day so she has all day to sing her lungs out, and if she doesn't sound good then she can keep trying. Live performing is different. If her voice isn't in top shape then she's not going to be able to crank out a cd quality vocal in one try in front of a live audience. Celine always sings her studio songs in a pretty high key and it's just not possible to replicate it exactly live.

It's funny, in spite of her claims that she doesn't need to prove anything with big notes on this album, it's chock full of really demanding vocal performances. Perhaps moreso than any of her past albums. I would expect that she'll be dropping a lot of songs by a semi-tone or two to sing them live.

 

I think "Taking Chances" and "Alone" sound fine in a lower key. I remember thinking that doing that to "That's the Way It Is" made it sound deflated.

Really, I don't understand what that's all about. She has ALWAYS sung her songs in the lower key, comparing to the original.

The Power of love has always been half a tone lower, All by myself one tone( or even 1.5) lower, I surrender half a tone, My heart will go on half a tone. ALWAYS!

The difference between singing on the stage and in the studio is HUGE. In studio you're in the great condition and you've got plenty of time and you can control yourself and so on and on and on... If you feel tired,you can come back tommorow. But when you've got 15 songs after the most difficult song in the concert you have to think about all these songs after this "big" one(in Celine's case there are big oneS).

I'll just give you for instance. Try to run for 1 hour on your top speed and I will look at you.

It's sort of a safe mode for her. Just imagine if she sang this F2 every night in All by myself, which is very high (I mean chest, of course), now she wouldn't have any vocal chords left.

Let's face it (with great pleasure, by the way) that Celine's songs are the most difficult songs to sing. Alicia Keys just got nothing to sing.

So calm down, all right, there's nothing to worry about. It's normal and not a big deal.

as a person becomes older so the voice takes on a lower range. barbara streisand is a prime example. the voice takes flack over the years for a singer so it would be obvious for the voice to become lower. the same with mariah carey.

I listened to an interview with her on Z100 and Shelly asked her about singing and Celine said that it was hard, not always fun, and that some days her voice just doesn't want to do what she wants it to. She said that she wishes that it was a guitar, so that she could tune it, but since it isn't, she does whatever she can.

 

She is the best, in whatever key she sings in, I love you Celine!

It's almost impossible. But I think she should sing at least once in the same key... I don't know, sometimes it seems like the album version HAS to be different.

I am a soprano and I prefer her singing half a note or a note lower instead of cracking up the song in a desperate attempt to sing in the orginial key. If it sounds better and it's more fun for her, then I really don't care which key she sings in. I know how hard it is to sing that high and do it well. I totally undestand and I don't mind at all.

And albums are digitally enhanced

Therefore singing it live will reduce the quality of the music which can change the sound

 

People give Celine Some Slack,, She works her #ss off,, Not To be critizied for changing the Key of a song

Check out her performances on ANDHC 2002 special, all of the songs are sung in original key, as is some Oprah appearances. Remember that she is well known for singing live almost the same as the original version. Also remember that when you watch ANY singer perform live, it's different than in the studio. Celine is one of very few that can actually sing in the same key live when she wants to or physically can.

Keep in mind that Celine still has a series of concerts in Las Vegas. Ruining her voice just before that would be foolish, wouldn't it? I'm sure she wants her final performance to be one hell of a thunderstorm, vocally-speaking.

When you are the greatest vocalist in he world, you are bound to be paranoid about your voice. If it wasn't for her "low-key" live performances and much-debated lip-synching, do you think she'd still be as good as she is today on her albums? Just look what happened to her contemporaries Mimi and Whit! I'm sure the vocal scare she had back in the early 90's is still fresh in her mind.

 

I don't know if she still does it but I once read that if her voice was dry, she would lean over the kitchen range for two hours and inhale the steam coming out of a kettle of boiling water!
