So many beautiful places!! I'm sure I'll never get to see most of them in my lifetime. You may notice from my panel that I am from New Orleans, LA/Natchez, MS. The reason I wrote this is because I am originally from New Orleans, LA until a small storm by the name of Hurricane Katrina wrecked most of the city of New Orleans in August 2005. Many of you may have heard about it. My husband, pets and I evacuated to Natchez, MS (about 200 miles away) before Katrina struck the city and after we realized our house was flooded to the ceiling, we knew that we had no house to go back home to, so we bought a house in Natchez, MS. I still drive to New Orleans every week to work. (Acutally, I first fell in love with Celine because of Hurricane Katrina: Last year, for the first time, I saw the video of her interview on the Larry King show done not long after Katrina struck and her passion and empathy for the people of the city touched my heart. Then she sang an a cappella version of "The Prayer" for the people of New Orleans and I couldn't stop crying. I had never known much about her or her music before this. I, of course had heard of her, but was not familiar with anything other than the songs that got big play on the radio. But after this, I started looking on YouTube for everything I could find on Celine. Then I found this forum and I have become a die-hard Celine fan. She not only has an amazing amount of talent, but she is one of the classiest human beings on this earth and I wish her all the best of everything.)

Below is a picture of our New Orleans neighborhood after the flooding Katrina downloaded from the NOAA website. The top part of the picture is my neighborhood and the streets look dark because that is flood water from the breach of the east side of the 17th St. Canal. The bottom part of the picture shows the other side of the 17th St Canal which did not breach and did not flood on that side. You can see the difference in the color of the land and streets. I have my house circled and with an arrow to show where I lived.

Now here are some pictures taken from our house in Natchez, MS. We live in the woods and have lots and lots of wildlife to keep us entertained. Also, we actually get seasons up there (fall colors, snow, etc.), so I have put some those pictures here. Natchez is a lot like a little New Orleans, only not as big and not as hot.

A doe and her fawn grazing in our front yard in Natchez:

A male ruby-throated hummingbird on one of our hummingbird feeders:

Fall colors in the woods by our house:

Also, every October for a whole weekend, Natchez has a Great Mississippi River Balloon Race and balloonists from all over the country come for the weekend. There's the balloon events (balloon glow, balloon race, target drop - they drop a beanbag from the balloon to land on a barge in the MIssissippi River), but there's also a music festival that lasts for the whole event. Here are some pictures of the balloons during the Balloon Glow at night:

They also have the Natchez Indian Grand PowWow in March of every year. Native American Indians come from all over the country and get together for the weekend and have dances, songs and have Indian wares for sale (blankets, jewelry, clothes, artwork). Here are a couple of pictures from that:

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k85/wolfepaw/Fall%20Colors/Natchez%20MS/DSC02303.jpg

Below is a young Indian boy dancing to the drum beat played by the elders of the tribes:

I have thousands of pictures and I could post them all day, but this ought to be enough to give you an idea of the things that go on in Natchez. Not a bad little town...but it isn't New Orleans.

I hpe you enjoy the pictures. Also, if any of you are interested in graphics, check out the Graphics section of this forum and see some of my "Art Masterpieces" with Celine. It's a little different twist on what most people do with pictures of Celine. I, myself, think she is a true work of art.

Wow! They are incredible pictures Wolfepaw! And I'm so sorry about what happened to New Orleans and your home. It must be really difficult, even today... Still, you seem to have a lovely home...

I live in a very modest town near the Loire in France at the moment.

The second photo is of my home town, Liverpool in the UK.

Hello, Tony.

Thank you for your touching comments about New Orleans and my home. I appreciate your thoughtfulness about the troubles we experienced here. I must say France is so beautiful. You are so lucky to live there. I have never gotten a chance to go to France, but I have been to the UK. I spent a year and a half in London setting up a laboratory at St. Bartholomew's Hospital back in the late 70's and I just adored England!!! I got to travel a little bit around England and I got to spend a weekend up by Inverness Scotland. I really enjoyed that weekend. It was very cold the year I was there (Spring 1978- Fall 1979). The North Sea was starting to freeze and it hadn't been that cold in England since about 1949, I think they said. I got to go to Stonehenge with my Mom and Dad in April 1978 and it snowed that morning and it was extremely cold and windy on the Salisbury Plain!! But what a breathtaking experience.

Did you take those pictures you posted? The one of the UK at night is stunning!!!

Thanks again for your kind words. Take care.

Hello Wolfepaw

I can't even begin to imagine what it must have been like for you... It feels almost inappropriate to talk about it because I never experienced what you went through. But I always remember watching Celine's emotional interview and it moved me to tears... Seeing her outrage and her compassion made the event much more real for me and it must be reassuring to know that there are people like Celine who really care.

France is a lovely country. I think Paris is my favourite place in the world. I lived there for a while and would give anything to be back there now. I will probably return to Liverpool after the summer though as my job ends soon but who knows... in a couple of years I might be able to make that move back to Paris that I keep dreaming about :)

Your trip sounds amazing. It seems you have seen more of the UK than I have! It's true we don't exactly have the best weather but it must have been lovely up in Scotland. I have only visited Edinburgh very briefly but Scotland is such a beautiful country. I have friends from Inverness and I really hope to travel around up there at some point. It's strange... I think we always seem to dream of far flung places, wish for things we don't have, crave the exotic just because it is different, and we don't fully appreciate what is right in front of us. I know Wales and Scotland have some fantastic landscapes... even England has its hidden corners.

As for the pictures, I didn't take them myself... No way am I that good with a camera, despite my best efforts! I found the photograph of Liverpool on the internet and thought it was really striking. I'm sure it has been modified for colours etc but still it's a pretty nice shot of our wonderful waterfront!

Hey amyja89!

where in Oxford do you live?!

Those pictures really bring back memories! Especially the third picture! It's a photo of my college... 'The Bridge Of Sighs' at Hertford!

My room as a first year was just at the foot of that bridge, right near St Helen's Passage... so you can imagine how difficult it was sleeping sometimes!

What I wouldn't give to be back at Oxford now...! I miss being a student :(

Hey!

I live about 5 minutes walk from town, just down the Abingdon Road by Hinksey Pool. I won't be around Oxford much longer though because I'm not quite clever enough to go to the Uni! lol ^_^

When were you a student at Oxford then? :)

Posted

I graduated two years ago exactly. Seems like yesterday...

I also lived down Abingdon Road, just past the Head Of The River pub near the Folly Bridge Inn.

My room looked out onto the church just opposite.

Memories... Where are you off to then?
