Say What? Posted August 28, 2007 at 01:52 PM Author Posted August 28, 2007 at 01:52 PM Thank you for pointing out "If Walls Could Talk" and "Dance With My Father". I've added them to my list and will have Vic or Bellamy update this topic once the new album is released in a couple of months. Celine covering herself is not a cover since she was the first one to record the song in a different language. I only included songs previously recorded by other artists prior to Celine's version's commersal release. Quote

Dionism Posted February 25, 2011 at 10:45 PM Posted February 25, 2011 at 10:45 PM (edited) I am very very very sorry to say that you can add another song on this list: Refuse To Dance is also a cover. I know, I know, we don't wanna hear it, we don't want to know, but...it's true... The composer of the song Charlie Dore recorded it herself first. I found out when I saw a Best Of CD of hers at a music store and recognized her name. At the back of her CD I read the following line: "A few ot the songs from Charlie Dore's repertoire were covered by famous artists like Celine Dion, ... etc." One of the songs from the tracklist on that CD was of course Refuse To Dance... Well we can find comfort though in the fact that technically almost every song by Celine is a cover, because they are written by other people. The fact that some songs weren't already previously recorded by other artists is just pure luck, because if Celine hadn't chosen to sing them first other artists probably would have. And more importantly: VICE VERSA!!! I think the fact that there are so many covers also goes to show that good new songs are really rare. I mean, in the 90's and early 2000's anyone would want to write a song for Celine, and still she recorded many covers. Simply because the songs she was sent weren't good enough, I think. That is why other artists also keep on covering. It is also why Celine's CD's are much more colourful than the CD's of most singer-songwriters, which most of the time do have a lot of mediocre songs between the few gems. They are all original material, but they are often not that great. Then I really prefer the covers, as long as they are done properly. For example, I don't consider All By Myself a cover anymoooooore , since she completely blew the original away. Because that is what Celine does, she makes the song her own. The song seems to have been made for her. Same goes for IACBTMN....well, we all remember Pandora's Box' version, do we? ...ehm no... Reason why? Because Celine really made that song come alive and brought it to a higher level, that's why... Edited February 25, 2011 at 10:47 PM by Dionism Quote
zuv Posted February 26, 2011 at 01:41 AM Posted February 26, 2011 at 01:41 AM (edited) Thats it? Seriously, Who cares? We have been going on and on and on about that. Unless you are 60 yrs old or you are a music fanatic crazy over the top, you shouldn't know that most of these songs are covers.... I mean theres like 105 listed? Out of 105 theres only 19 that i knew they were covers before I heard them for the first time. Out of 19 4 are french christmas classic songs, that every single artist has performed as well. ITs a must.4 are english christmas classic songs, that every....................................... as well. Its a must. 1 is God Bless America. Who hasnt sung that?1 is Shook Me all Night Long. for a TV special.1 is Staying Alive. for concertsStarmania + Blues du businessman. All must as well So to me she has recorded 6 songs that I heard before over how many?... 250 songs that she recorded? Not a big deal.Alone- All the way- Oxygene- Natural Woman - Dance with My father (released in a best of album) - I wish (live) The rest of covers listed were pretty much dead songs and unpopular ones anyway. All she did was bringing them back to life with her voice. Making them 100000 times better. To me, those songs are Celine's and they are new. ITs not like she uses covers like: I will always love you or Unbreak my heart.... Edited February 26, 2011 at 01:44 AM by zuv Quote

Here's a link to the song: . That needs to be removed from the list. I have to add that I think Carol Welsman's original of "This Lullaby" ("Baby Close Your Eyes") is absolutely beautiful and blows Celine's out of the water: As for Stevie Vann's original of "If Walls Could Talk," m'eh, Celine's is MUCH better than this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX-Jl5c-WvY Edited February 26, 2011 at 06:59 AM by SuperLove4Celine Quote

Say What? Posted September 18, 2012 at 10:12 PM Author Posted September 18, 2012 at 10:12 PM ''I Surrender'' is not a cover. As far as I know Celine recorded this song in 2001 and released it in March 2002. As for Mary Griffin I have no idea when she recorded this song but she released it in November 2002 on her album ''Purified''.i Surrender IS a cover: http://www.cabaretforacure.org/default.asp?id=101 Mary Griffin In each generation a voice comes along that embodies classic beauty, defining poise, and soul stirring ability. Mary Griffin, raised in the deep southern bayous of Louisiana, first heard melodies that were both enchanting and inspiring in her father's small country church. Outside of the church however, it was the steamy rhythm and blues along with soul music that Mary imitated. Through these vices she picked up the soulfulness of gospel music and the edgy blues vocals that gave her local fame in Louisiana. Griffins voice also opened the doors of education in her favor and she attended Grambling University - majoring in performance on full music scholarships. After attending college Mary moved to New Orleans to pursue her career as a solo artist. Not long after moving to New Orleans, Mary Griffin found herself accepting offers from various production companies to record music for upcoming films. The films Coyote Ugly and Driven featured hit songs that Griffin recorded including the song Perfect Moment. In addition to recording hits for soundtracks in film, Griffin cameos in the film 54 and recorded the track entitled Knock On Wood. Thereafter, Griffin was signed to Curb Records and released the internationally acclaimed album Purified. It was from this album that major recording artists Patti Labelle and Celine Dion were captivated by Mary's powerful ballads I Surrender and Anytime. Griffin would soon receive a phone call from Labelle that inquired about her availability as a background vocalist for The R&B Phenomenon. Mary accepted the offer and began to hit the road on tours and concert dates with Patti Labelle. Griffins addictive voice on her debut album also prompted Celine Dion to re-record I Surrender. Griffin has shared the stage with such greats as Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, and Christina Aguilera. Quote

Say What? GoldenLeaf Posted September 19, 2012 at 12:22 AM Posted September 19, 2012 at 12:22 AM (edited) I was aware of this article but there's something wrong with it : ''Griffins addictive voice on her debut album also prompted Celine Dion to re-record I Surrender.'' Like I said : Mary Griffin's debut album ''Purified'' was released in November 2002 so how can Celine's version be considered as a cover when she commercially released it before Mary Griffin? Say What? Posted September 19, 2012 at 02:00 AM Author Posted September 19, 2012 at 02:00 AM (edited) I believe the album was released before November 2002. I know a few websites state that date but I've read articles here and there stating the same story.... even on Mary Griffin's official site. I also recall learning of Celine's cover upon the release of ANDHC. Wish I still had all of my Queen Celine News info to verify this. :/ Edited September 19, 2012 at 02:03 AM by Say What? Quote
GoldenLeaf Posted September 19, 2012 at 04:56 PM Posted September 19, 2012 at 04:56 PM (edited) These 3 websites say that her ''Purified'' album was really released on November 5, 2002. http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/.../a/Purified.htm http://www.allmusic.com/album/purified-mw0000227921 http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/purified/id77788432 I don't see why these websites would list a wrong release date. The Japanese Version was released in March 2001. However the Japanese Version of her ''Purified'' album doesn't include ''I Surrender'' : http://www.discogs.com/Mary-Griffin-Purifi...release/2066088 Edited September 19, 2012 at 05:00 PM by Calypso Quote
Say What? Posted September 19, 2012 at 05:22 PM Author Posted September 19, 2012 at 05:22 PM (edited) I know. But why would Mary Griffin lie about the fact that Celine fell in love with her version of the song? She didn't write the song so there's got to be an explanation about this. The release dates on those websites are less reliable than an official bio IMO. We can argue 'til the end of times about this so let's agree to disagree Edited September 19, 2012 at 05:23 PM by Say What? Quote
GoldenLeaf Posted September 19, 2012 at 07:23 PM Posted September 19, 2012 at 07:23 PM (edited) Who knows? Maybe Mary Griffin recorded the song as a demo in 2000 or 2001 then Celine heard it and decided to record it. That would explain everything! ... and this would mean that Celine's version is not a cover since the definition of a cover is : ''A cover is defined as a song that was previously recorded AND commercially released.'' Like I said we don't have a proof that Mary Griffin's version was commercialy released before Celine's version. Mary Griffin might have recorded it before Celine but commercially released it after Celine. Edited September 19, 2012 at 07:26 PM by Calypso Quote
MANDRAKE Posted September 19, 2012 at 11:22 PM Posted September 19, 2012 at 11:22 PM Even if Maria Christensen is the original singer of "Just a little bit of love", the version Céline covered is Rebekah Ryan's one launched 1996. That song is much closer to the version we all know (Christensen's in a house track that does not resemble to what we have heard).
