cloudboy1984 Posted August 18, 2007 at 03:37 PM Posted August 18, 2007 at 03:37 PM (edited) When you're with friends, it's a bit easier to stand up for Celine. Friends will mock you but yet listen to you and not go too far. Usually. And you know you can tell them to go to Hell, etc, because friends are also cool like that. Again, most of the time. But, let's imagine, you're in a situation where you are meeting new people, could be people you might see again, might not be people you'll see again. The "what music you listen to" comes along, or simply music is mentioned and the discussion is kicked off. First of all, if you are asked by these 'strangers' what you listen to, would you say "I love Celine Dion"? How would you say it? Now, whether you've said you like Celine or not, the discussion turns to a Celine bashing (as it almost always does whenever her name is mentioned these days). They say mean things like "she's so overrated!" - "she can't sing!" - "she has no talent. The bands I listen to have more talent than her!" and so on and so forth. What's your reaction? What do you say? Do you try and make them see the light? Do you defend Celine? Or do you silently wish you could have superstrength to bash them up? Do you stay silent or do you like Celine, make your voice be heard? Edited August 18, 2007 at 03:38 PM by cloudboy1984 Quote

There`s no point in getting mad at someone about such things. Quote 16 YEARS A FORUM MEMBER
greasepaint*30 Posted August 18, 2007 at 04:12 PM Posted August 18, 2007 at 04:12 PM I admit I do get annoyed, especially with ridiculous comments like.."she cant sing". thats just a false statement. Like saying The Beatles weren't successful......!However, everyone has a right to their opinion, and I think that the success of Celine proves not only is she remarkable and a fantastic singer but knows how to keep her fans. cmcdaori Posted August 18, 2007 at 05:14 PM Posted August 18, 2007 at 05:14 PM Annoyed!!!Hmm...I become WILD and NERVOUS whenever sb says sth bad about her...This is my reaction...i become crazy like i'm allergic on saying bad stuffs about Céline or sth that never proved the truth...That's the most i hate...when sb says she did that or this and nothing of this is true. That makes me very angry and annoyed...i become like a beast which wants to bite sb with its rough teeth.I mean...i have to respect sb's opinion like sb has to do it in return, but that person doesn't have to speak about Celine if he doesn't like her...that's the point of all this...I never speak about sb if i don't like him...i simply say it's not my style or sth and i don't say...he's like this or...never giving offenses like many people do...Because you never know what sb can do it or say to you...or how he'll react...or what he likes, what not...then it's better to keep your mouth shut up... When i meet sb...i usually want to tell him that my sweetest artist is Celine, but i choose to whom i'll say that. Not everyone...According to my friends, they do understand me...but i don't speak with them about her...i feel that i'm becoming bored with this story,so i keep my silence and sometimes i even ignore her name when i mention her....because many of them become allergic on her and i do not want to fight with them...In any way i don't lie...When sb is asking me.˝What music do you like?˝i always say...˝The only and unique-Celine Dion˝...i don't shame what i like, who i love more than myself...but it's better to avoid talking about Celine sometimes...like our friend said...the people don't respect her as well..they have different opinion about her...usually is like that...so...I got one example...When i met a one colleague in the1 year of university,i still remember...we were talking and i suddenly told her that i'm obsessed about celine's music...She looked at me like she accepted what i said and then she started with her story where she read that Celine changed her faith getting married with Rene.....I mean...i knew that he has some origine from Siria and etc...but i was sure that she was married in a cathedral Notre Dame, and i couldn't convince her...and it made me very mad...i didn't forgive her and i'm still very mad with her...it passed so much time...it wasn't the point if Celine has changed her faith or not...it was about her stupid talking and the worse thing was that i knew so many information about Celine...so many that she couldn't say anything to me actually...i mean that was obvious...in all this...i wanted to say her...Hey girl...i'm the biggest fan of Celine...what are you talking to me...she offended me so much...i felt worse because of celine...and i i talk to her today, but she doesn't accepts Celine yet...She always tells me...you and your stupid artist...i purposely mention Celine any time i'm with her...She hasn't offended me very much as she did the first time because i have been threatening her and i'm still...ok maybe once she said ...your stupid artist..not anymore...i don't let her...That's my story...i hope that i hasn't been so bored...everything is worth when it is about Celine...thanx for your attention... LVCeline Posted August 18, 2007 at 06:28 PM Posted August 18, 2007 at 06:28 PM I consider myself very passionate about Celine, but I don't equate being passionate with being defensive. While it always irks me to hear anything negative about her, I have to realize that not everyone is going to like her. I have to think to myself, I can't stand Mariah Carey's voice, for example, most of the time so obviously it's not fair for me to think everyone should like Celine's voice. Preference isn't something that can be argued. I do my best to ignore such comments and realize that me liking her is the only thing that matters. It particularly irks me to hear fans on this board trash her, but again there's nothing that can be done as everyone will have different opinions. Even after 5 years of fandom I still go crazy about her and I still love just about everything that comes out of her mouth! Quote

leenylover Posted August 19, 2007 at 10:40 PM Posted August 19, 2007 at 10:40 PM You know this love/hate thing isn't just limited to Celine. Even Madonna and Kylie Minogue have their fair share of haters, and they are two of the "coolest" women in pop! Personally, I think people give their opinions a little too freely and have little consideration for others when doing so. When it comes to life or death situations, war, killing, abuse and so on, I can understand people not holding back and letting everyone know exactly how they feel. But when it comes to a difference in musical taste I think people can afford to be just a little bit more respectful. I am sick of hearing people say "ooh you don't listen to that rubbish do you?!" or "That music is so crap!" or "why did they bother recording that, it's garbage!" Each one of us has an individual taste and preference when it comes to music, there is no right or wrong. No-one has the right to tell anyone else what they should enjoy listening to - or singing for that matter! It's absolutely obsurd that anyone does! I have no problem in telling any one I enjoy Celine's music, she is an accomplished artist, who has acheived incredible things during her career, it makes perfect sense that she should have an army of fans world wide. I am one of them and have the great pleasure of knowing many more! Love Lisaxxx Quote My List of Celine Dion stuff, PM me to trade!
Istike Posted August 20, 2007 at 12:05 AM Posted August 20, 2007 at 12:05 AM (edited) Hey! I love Céline for a very long time and the most people around me are know that. Every time when I know some new people it always runs the question about the music. I simply say that I love Céline and I am fanatic. When they get this quick and simply answer they reply fast like 'really? I don't like her so much.' And I say that maybe the reason that they feel that way is all beacouse the publicity of her on the radio or the TV. They all know MHWGO and TPOL but they don't know that many many huge and wonderfull songs that only we know because we buy her life on CDs and falling into her inmidiately. So sometimes it depends on the fortune that somebody hears the power and sepciality in her voice via the radio or not. But if I show them some favorite songs from her they usually change their mind and say that they didn't know that Céline can sing that way.... Each of us has the power to ignore, the power to choose what to listen to, and the power to move. Unless someone is in your face and corners you to tell you how horrible Celine is (which I doubt it rarely happens) just don't waste your time on them. Or... Use Karen Walker from "Will and Grace" for example. She's totally blunt and numb most of the time, but there's this one scene where she did the funniest thing. You might be able to use this: She was talking to Will and Grace. She totally lost interest in what they were saying. So, she interrupted by yelling in her high-pitched voice and pointed away, "Oh, Look! Better people!" :mdr: Then, she rushed off! Anyway, I just wanted to give you a little laugh. deana Posted August 20, 2007 at 09:44 PM Posted August 20, 2007 at 09:44 PM generally speakling, in high school my nickname was celine. everyone knew i was celine obsessed and thoroughly made fun of me for it. it was pretty much the same in college with a little less teasing and a little more annoyance that you could hear my music from the next room. and that was the story of my life for the first ten years of fandom. i defended her to the end without a second thought. but for the past two years that i've been out of school, my fanaticism has dwindled down. i started exploring other music as i started to discover who i was. celine was more of a nostalgic memory for me. only when she would come out with a new album would i get all obsessive again, but usually i kept it to myself. then lately it's all been coming back to me. (yep, just like the song.) and somewhere along my journey of self-discovery i learned that it doesn't matter what other people think. now when they ask me what kind of music i like i start rattling off names like kimya dawson, feist, sarah harmer, david bowie, queen, ac/dc, radiohead, etc. (you can view my profile for a more extensive list), and then at the end i say something along the lines of "oh, and you can laugh all you want but i've also been a huge fan of celine dion since i was ten." and usually they just say "oh, that's really cool." or give me a strange look like "are you serious?" whatever their reaction is, it never bothers me. RLAAMJR. Posted August 21, 2007 at 02:37 AM Posted August 21, 2007 at 02:37 AM Hmmm... I can relate to this. Actually, I'm a bit shy to tell everybody that I'm a crazy Celine Dion fan. But as time passes by, the shyness get more little but it doesn't really disappear. There are only few people that I would show that I'm a crazy Celine Dion fan and that includes my family and less than 5 friends, i guess. Even if my girldfriend knows that I'm a Celine Dion fan, I don't really let her show how addicted I am to her. So I don't really talk much about her even. If she's the one who opens up about Celine, I would not really talk much about Celine. I'm sorry. I just can't help myself for being kinda ashamed to be a Celine Dion fan. But if I were a female, there's no good reason why I should be shy/ashamed of her, right? Quote
