Maman Dion Foundation to supply school bags to 1,000 needy children

Two projects are working to provide children in need with supplies when they head back to school. One is the initiative of a foundation set up by Céline Dion's mother, Thérèse; the other was started by the Salvation Army's Quebec division, the Dormez-vous mattress store chain and KidsFest, an organization that works to equip children who live below the poverty line.

 

Dion's goal is to supply school bags to 1,000 needy children through her Maman Dion Foundation. She is suggesting the public organize fundraisers to support this cause. Last year, her foundation raised enough money to present 450 school bags to children.

 

Her bags will have a retail value of $400 each and will include school supplies and a clothing voucher, thanks to school supply retailer BuroPLUS and clothing chain L'Aubainerie. The bags will be distributed to children in need, as determined by Quebec's 72 French and English school commissions. For information, call 866-430-3466 or visit www.fondationmamandion.org

That's great to hear of people (especially Celine's family) doing things like that. I am a 7th grade teacher in what is deemed the ghetto of North Las Vegas. My students often have a hard time affording basic school supplies as well. It is very touching when people from the community reach out and help the schools and thier students. Education is really the ticket to success in life and anyone who helps a child succeed is a hero in my book.

Maman Dion connaît bien la vie dans une famille nombreuse. Elle sait qu'un enfant mérite tout l'amour dont on dispose. C'est ainsi qu'elle souhaite donner un coup de pouce, grâce à sa fondation, à des enfants de milieux défavorisés en leur remettant des trousses scolaires.

 

Thérèse Tanguay Dion, qui a mis au monde 14 enfants, a fondé la fondation qui porte son nom il y a presque dix ans. La Fondation maman Dion agit auprès des 72 commissions scolaires francophones et anglophones du Québec. Elle a fait l'objet d'une biographie, La vie est un long voyage, écrite par Georges Hébert-Germain.
