Artists that deserve to be remembered!

I wanted to start a topic in which we can all post some information on a person that deserves to be remembered - alive or dead. We all love Celine, so I thought we could share the other loves of our lives.

 

Mine is Karen Carpenter. I'm sure most of you know of her, but do you really know that much about her??

She was born in 1950 and died of anorexia in 1983, at the age of 32. She and her brother, Richard, created the Carpenters in 1968 - had a record deal by 1969 - and hit the number one position with "Close to You"(the album and the single) in 1970. Throughout the 70s the Carpenters sold millions of records and had record breaking top ten hits, and became THE greatest selling group of the 1970s.

 

Karen's voice is considered one of the greatest and has been described as "haunting", with an untouchable "yearning". Petula Clark once said that "there was something inside of her reaching out to be noticed. That's that quality."

 

Karen loved to play the drums even more than she loved to sing. She always considered herself a "drummer who sings". She was forced to come out from behind the drums and be the star of the group - which led to self image problems - ultimately leading to her demise. But her voice will always be one of the greatest.
