musicFIRST Coalition Takes Aim At Radio Performance Rights

June 13, 2007

A new coalition has been announced which will aim for fairness in compensation from radio for performance royalties. The musicFIRST coalition is a partnership between musicians and industry organizations which aims to ensure that all performers, "from aspiring and local artists, to background singers and well-known stars," are properly compensated.

Some of the artists involved in the coalition include Christina Aguilera, Jimmy Buffett, Celine Dion, Don Henley, Wyclef Jean, John Legend and Jennifer Lopez, as well as 11 industry organizations.

A press conference is scheduled for tomorrow with more details.

what is coalition?

A coalition is an organized and united group of people supporting a common cause.

Here, their group is called musicFIRST Coalition.

Their cause is explained in paragraph one of the press release.

That's really disappointing.

The coalition basically says that people like Celine want to be paid everytime a radio station plays one of her songs.

So not only are the artists getting promotion for their music being played, they also want money for it now.

Why is it bad?

Because it hurts small radio stations. College radio, and independant radio will be crippled if that happens. You can pretty much say goodbye to any type of radio that isn't Top 40 or corporate sponsered.

I don't want to sound absurd, but WHAT'S NEXT?

If they are talking about performance royalties, are they going to start tracking down DJs at private parties and clubs?

But then again, I wonder if most major dance clubs already have to pay a certain licensing fee to be able to play music for the masses?

Now, on a smaller scale: I have a friend who is a choir director. To protect herself, she has purchased a license just to be able to order choral music and allow her choir to perform them.

just curious... why?

Celine doesn't need the money. If anything this could hurt her if stations decide they'd rather not play her music if they have to pay for it.

Usually artists will not worry about the liscensing fee from radio because it's free promotion for them.
