Dion may grace centennial

The little kids at Ste. Justine Hospital may be in for a big show in August.

 

Officials at the pediatric hospital have been in touch with pop singer Celine Dion and Cirque du Soleil for an early August event celebrating the institution's centennial.

 

The hospital has 155 projects on the go for its 100th anniversary, Ste. Justine centenary spokesperson Sylvie Bachand said. She would not comment on this specific event, indicating that details are still being worked out. Dion's representatives would not confirm the singer's participation.

 

A Cirque du Soleil representative said the hospital had been in touch, but had not booked an act.

 

College Jean de Brebeuf has confirmed that the hospital will be renting out the soccer field on the campus's west side, which faces the hospital, the first Saturday in August.

 

Alain Turcotte, who is responsible for space rentals at Brebeuf, said the soccer pitch is close enough to the hospital that an audience could watch from the east-facing windows.

 

This would be a boon for those children who can't make it outside the hospital doors.

 

Dion's last performance in Montreal was for an April 2002 appearance on Radio-Canada's popular game show La Fureur.

 

Dion has been a strong supporter of the hospital since her niece Karine was a patient there in the early 1990s. Karine died of cystic fibrosis in 1993, at age 16.

 

In March, the hospital unveiled a huge portrait of Dion and her son, Rene-Charles, composed of thousands of photographs of children who have passed through Ste. Justine's halls. The mosaic, titled Hommage en visages, greets visitors when they enter the hospital.

Celine Dion will perform at Ste. Justine Hospital in August, a spokesperson at Equipe Spectra has confirmed.

 

Spectra, which manages events such as the jazz festival and FrancoFolies, volunteered its services to the pediatric hospital to organize a multi-act show to celebrate its centennial.

 

Dion is expected to perform three songs. No other guests have confirmed their presence, but the hospital has been in contact with Cirque du Soleil.

 

The private show will take place in the soccer field at College Jean de Brbeuf the first Saturday in August.

 

Dion has an intimate history with the hospital that began nearly 15 years ago when her niece Karine died of cystic fibrosis at the facility.

 

Dion has not performed in Montreal in more than five years.

Sainte-Justine confirme que Céline Dion et le Cirque du Soleil ont accepté de participer à une grande fête privée destinée aux employés et aux enfants du centre hospitalier universitaire montréalais.

 

Cet événement visant à souligner le centenaire de Sainte-Justine aura lieu le 4 aout et réunira d'autres artistes de renom.

 

Puisque cette fête se fera en privé, des pourparlers sont présentement en cours pour assurer une éventuelle diffusion télévisuelle qui sera destinée au grand public.

 

Michel Pauzé, président du Centenaire de Sainte-Justine, a expliqué que cette grande fête permettra de remercier, de manière toute spéciale, les employés, les médecins, les retraités, les bénévoles et les enfants de Sainte-Justine pour leurs efforts et les batailles qu'ils livrent au quotidien. Il s'est dit honoré de pouvoir compter sur la collaboration de Céline Dion, marraine de Sainte-Justine.

 

Le Centre hospitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine est le plus grand centre mère-enfant au Canada. Il compte 450 lits, enregistre 19 000 admissions annuellement, et accueille 260 000 patients en clinique externe. Plus de 4000 employés composent ses effectifs. Il est l'un des quatre plus importants centres pédiatriques en Amérique.
