'Lot' is all about making movies

 

Tonight, Fox is giving viewers a sneak-peak of its upcoming movie-making reality competition "On the Lot," which boasts Mark Burnett ("Survivor") and filmmaker Steven Spielberg as executive producers. Metro Detroiters can root for Michael C., a freelance commercial director who hails from Bloomfield Hills and lives in Chicago. He's one of 50 aspiring film directors competing for the grand prize -- a $1 million development deal with DreamWorks.

 

On The Lot Makes The First Series Of Cuts

 

For the On The Lot premiere, fifty of the world’s most talented yet undiscovered directors started by taking the Universal Studios backlot tour. After the tour, the fifty contestants gathered at the Biltmore Hotel, where they were introduced to the competition’s judges: Carrie Fisher, Garry Marshall, and Brett Ratner.

 

For their first challenge, each contestant was given one of five random story ideas and then had to pitch a film to the three judges based on the idea. During the first pitch, Mark McLain lost his place and asked to go get his notes. Judge Brett Ratner told Mark that his pitch felt like he was making it up as he went along. Amazingly, the pitches got worse from there.

 

The initial cut was reminiscent of the early rounds of American Idol auditions as it focused more on the worst pitches. In the end, thirty six directors made it on to the next round. For their second challenge, the contestants divided into teams of three in order to shoot a two and a half minute short movie based on the logline “out of time.” The catch was that they only had twenty-four hours to shoot the short. The premiere episode ended with conflicts erupting as the teams struggled to complete their movies.

 

They are currently in the narrowing-down process.

For me, there was only one guy that really impressed me with his sincere storytelling technique and the emotional appeal of his movie pitch. I thought the usual "Realty-TV" dramas were as-expected and we got to see this ogre-of-a-jerk bullying a shorter-and-gentle-philosophical over-thinker. But then again, isn't that films are about? Finding the good guys and finding the bad guys, finding the obstacle, experiencing the journey, and reaching the destination? It can be. Yet, it can be anything you want, eh? But it's gotta leave you... BELIEVING!

 

I don't know what to expect yet from this series. I have not watched television, let alone REALITY TV, for a while now. However, "On the Lot" has served as a interest for me ever since it was first conceived a year ago. At that moment a year ago, I downloaded the .pdf guidelines and even had consideration of submitting a short film for the competition. However, I decided to not submit yet. Normally, when I do something, I have a gut feeling that it would be worthwhile. I did not feel it yet.

 

Now it is a year later. The have selected their TOP 50. Well, tonight, they already dropped 1/5 of the group. I truly want to see how this series will progress. I am looking forward to experiencing all of the wonderful work that goes behind-the-scenes of filmmaking! EXCITING! Of course, I am looking forward to seeing who will be chosen as the next film director and who will work on the lot!

 

Meanwhile, I will enjoy the journey!

I was trying to get my gf to enter, but the Film that she has was too long or something. Maybe next year. Sopha you should definitely do it! I haven`t seen your work, but I`m sure its great

So, the show this evening was short and sweet.

 

We got a chance to see clips of the first challenge: MAKE A SHORT FILM IN 24 HOURS!

12 contestants were eliminated.

 

So, they showcased the best films by made by these filmmakers.

I was VERY impressed with "Time Out." The storyline was so-and-so, but the use of masking still images to create a world frozen in time and instilling creativity within their work was what impressed me.

Now, their next challenge is to make a film in one hour! :blink:

They are given pre-written scripts, a whole professional film crew with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipments... but they have only one hour!

 

And next Monday, there will be a 2-hour event, premiering their short films!

They will selecting the final dozen next week, I think.
