Celine's favourite songs...

Hello to all! :bye1: I was watching the making of LTAL today and it's obvious how much Celine loved both Us and Miles To Go...She said during Us how much she loved it and seemed v emotional. With MTG, she said it was a true performance, not show-offy like ABM but because it has such a mood- and yet I have never seen either song performed live. I think it's terrible both these songs aren't higher up in her rosta of performance songs. Us is so raw- I love when she sings it out the limo window when she's leaving the studio- so powerful- imagine you saw and heard that driving past.

What do you guys think? I can just imagine both these songs in AND...a long road in the dusty Nevadan desert for MTG...

There are varying reasons for why these songs may not have been performed live.

A: Contract negotiation issues - With each song that is recorded there is of couse a writer to that song. If Celine were to actually write all her material like let's say Shania Twain this wouldn't be an issue. However, different songwriters have different clauses in each of their contracts. Royalties have to be paid each time an album is sold, the song is played on the radio, each time it's performed on stage, etc. So, with that said it is possible that the songwriters of these songs weren't willing to budge on these issues, and neither were Rene/Sony. (Anybody remember "The Reason?") The album was originally going to be titled The Reason but negotiations fell through.

B: Studio Quality Vs. Live Performance Quality - The songs sound incredibly amazing on a studio album, but when it comes time to do a live performance they just don't live up to the standards that Celine or someone else may set (unless of course the song is 100% lipped.) A classic example of this is "That's The Way It Is." The song is amazing on "All The Way...A Decade Of Song," however when it was performed on "The World's Children Day" special it lacked a certain "UMPH!" power. That's not to say it was Celine's fault or that the performance was horrible. All I'm saying is that certain songs sound better in the studio than they do live.

C: Promotion - There are certain songs that must be promoted in order for albums to sell. When a new album comes out the people involved (Management, the artist, songwriters, record labels, etc.) must decide which of the new songs would be enough to help boost album sales. Songs such as "My Heart Will Go On" and "The Reason" would be enough to help sales due to affiliations with "Titanic" and Carole King. Songs such as "Miles To Go (Before I Sleep)" may not since they are affiliated with, as some people think, a one hit wonder (Corey Hart - "Sunglasses At Night.")

D: Stupidity, Arrogance & Forgetfulness - I think this category is pretty self explanitory. Need I type more? LOL

Okay, I think I typed enough. Time to go do laundry - :sarcastic "hurray!":

Take care,

Joe

I agree about it!! Some songs kind of lose their power when performed live. That's the way it is is one of my favorite songs of all time, and still I didn't like so much when I heard it live...

But I may admit that I'd LOVE to hear MTG performed live!!
