I wonder if it's tradition, or if it's a national regulation or maybe because someone in the commission doesn't like Celine?

 

There's a billionaire in my city whose company developed the upper west portion of my city. He had one of the big streets named after him within his community, and he's STILL ALIVE!

A street in Céline Dion's hometown of Charlemagne, Que., now has a name — even if it's without the province's blessing.

 

The town of 6,000 has christened an unnamed street after the world-famous pop singer, despite the Quebec government's refusal to recognize it because she's still alive.

 

Charlemagne town council originally proposed naming it for Dion last September.

 

But the Quebec commission in charge of such matters rejected the idea in November, saying a person must be deceased for at least a year before receiving such an honour.

 

Charlemagne director general Bernard Boudreau said Tuesday that council didn't want to wait until after Dion's death to honour her, and the signs on the commercial boulevard, which intersects a highway, have gone up despite the province's objections.

 

Boudreau added that Dion has had a phenomenal career and has "spread the name of Charlemagne all over the planet."

 

The town has honoured Dion in the past, erecting a giant sculpture of the globe with the signature "Céline" across it.

 

Dion, 40, is performing in her Las Vegas show A New Day. The five-times-a-week revue, created by former Cirque du Soleil artistic director Franco Dragone, will close out its nearly five-year run at Caesars Palace in December.

Celine Dion Is Out On The Street!

CHARLEMAGNE, Quebec (February 2, 2007) -- Celine Dion gets to enjoy the street named after her while she's still alive.

 

Le Journal de Montreal reports Dion's hometown of Charlemagne in Quebec has named a street after her.

 

The Quebec government won't recognize it because she's still alive. It says a person must be dead for a year before a street can be named for him or her. Signs have gone up anyway.

 

Charlemagne director-general Bernard Boudreau says the town council didn't want to wait until Dion was dead to honor her.

 

The town has already given Dion its love in the past. It erected a sculpture of a globe with Dion's signature across it.

This is crazy! I don't understand the controversy especially since the town voted for it. Usually they tend to name things after former politicians (deceased) but you would think the government would want the street named after her for tourism, etc. One thing that article said that I thought was odd was that it's on a street/boulevard that did not have a name. What???

 

Another crazy government law. You would hope they would have better things to concern themselves with. Hopefully the sign will stay.
