Oct. 30 2006 10:50 PM ET CTV.ca News Staff Three weeks before her CD hits stores, and some critics are already calling Naomi Striemer the next Celine Dion. "Remember the first time you heard Whitney, Mariah or Celine?" wrote Billboard magazine recently. "Naomi Striemer will become the commanding diva of the decade." The magazine called her voice exalting. Life for the 23-year-old began in New York state, but she grew up in Malagash Point, Nova Scotia (population 774). Her back-to-the-land, very religious parents home-schooled her and kept her sheltered from pop culture. "No TV, no radio, no movies. Basically no media," Striemer told CTV news. "I didn't know that dial in the car actually connected to the outside world." On MySpace, Striemer wrote: "I love music, it makes me feel more then anything else can. I've played piano since I was 7, and now I play guitar as well. I write all of my music, sometimes co-write with other people. I also write for other artists (on occasion)." A few years ago, Striemer was a struggling artist shopping her own CD and looking for a break, which came when she played a gig at a downtown Toronto bookstore. Steven Nowack, a hedge fund manager, just happened to walk in the door. He made the decision that if Striemer would sign a record deal, he would change careers. "I walked up to Naomi and I said, 'What are you doing with the rest of your life,' and I think she was shocked," he said. "And her parents were there and I think they thought I was asking for her hand in marriage," he said. Nowack, who created S Records (after his first name), isn't the only one to fall for Striemer's voice. Grammy Award-winning artist Carlos Santana is playing guitar on the new CD, entitled Images. A single -- Cars, featuring her and Santana -- is already on the airwaves. If nothing else, the comparisons the media are bandying about with such brand-name artists flatters Striemer. "The whole goal was to one day be like my idols -- Mariah, Celine and Whitney -- so to go on to be even in the same sentence, the same category, it's like, 'Are people really saying that?'," she said. She's got a good voice, but I don't know if I'd put her in the same category as Celine, Whitney, and Mariah... She reminds me a little of Anna Nalick mixed with Evanescence. I don't know, maybe I'm way off. If I were Randy Jackson, I'd make his big chuckle laugh. My ears! WHAT A LIE! Comparing her to Celine, Mariah, and Whitney is a big OVERRATED lie. She doesn't even have a chest voice. She sounds like a drag queen. The only reason why they call her the next Celine is that her name could appear in online news search engines. She's worse than the old Jessica Simpson!
