BBC 2 The Culture Show are inviting fans to send in nominations for your favourite British cultural icon by email or text. Nominations close on Monday 30th October and voting from a shortlist of ten will begin on Saturday 11th November.

Celine Dion | Best-selling Female Artist in the World

 

She sang a duet with opera giant Luciano Pavarotti; she sells out the UK's legendary Wembley venue; and she has sung for the Pope. Not many middle-of-the-road balladeers have a profile as high or a career as successful as Canadian crooner Celine Dion. 

 

The Quebec-born songbird has notched up worldwide sales of 175 million, plus another 30 million just for the Titanic soundtrack. "My Heart Will Go On", a song James Cameron nearly jettisoned from the film, is the most played radio hit in history, according to Billboard magazine!

 

Her song "Think Twice" was #1 all over Europe:  specially in United Kingdom. It stayed 7 weeks at the top in UK, which was a record for a single (not replicated since 1965 with the Beatles). "Think Twice" sold there over 1.2 million copies in UK and should be certified 2 x platinum (for now it's undercertified and remains platinum only).

 

By 2004 she had accumulated record sales of 175 million, and was presented with the Chopard Diamond award from the World Music Awards show for becoming the Best-selling Female Artist in the World. As of 2003 Dion has performed nightly in her show A New Day at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, under a contract that extends through 2007. Dion's music has been influenced by various genres, which range from pop and rock to gospel and classical, and she is noted for her technically skilled and powerful vocals.

Have made an impact on British cultural life

 

Nice idea though. Maybe we should ask them to do a WORLD Living Icon, instead of just the UK
