Car tunes: Redheads are driven to sing

Have you ever caught yourself belting out a Celine Dion song while driving down the highway? Or been stared at while rocking out to a Bruce Springsteen tune when you're stopped at a red light?

If you're a redhead, the answer is most likely yes, according to a recent survey of more than 1,000 U.S. drivers.

The study, commissioned by car-accessory company Auto Expressions, found that 53 percent of redheads say they always sing in the car. Also, women are more likely to jam out than men, Capricorns are the least likely to sing while on the road, and 40 percent of "car crooners" have air fresheners.

Eight out of 10 people prefer to sing alone.

Redhead Jon-Michael Ball controls the volume to his car radio by a button on the steering wheel. He flips through stations until a song fits his mood.

On a recent day he is belting out the lyrics to a Pink song, in the same booming tenor voice he showcases for the Orlando Opera.

I'm comin' up, so you better get this party started

Get this party started on a Saturday night

Everybody's waitin for me to arrive

Sendin' out the message to all of my friends

We'll be lookin flashy in my Mercedes Benz

Except in this case, Ball's driving a gray 1997 Buick Park Avenue, which he describes as a "grandpa car," fitted with a fresh-and-clean fragranced air freshener.

"It's a boat," he says of his first car in eight years. He just moved to Orlando from New York, where he relied on the subway system to get him around.

"If you sang in the subway, you'd get looks or money thrown at you," jokes Ball, 28.

Now, he finds himself unwinding in the Buick after long days at the opera.

His music selection depends on the traffic, he says. If it's bad, he prefers rap, maybe something by Ludacris. On a clear roadway, he sings along to Billy Joel and the Beatles.

It's been a hard day's night,

And I've been working like a dog,

It's been a hard day's night,

I should be sleeping like a log.

He taps the steering wheel with his hand and laughs as he goes.

Unlike Ball, four out of 10 commuters care when someone catches them singing, and SUV drivers sing the most.

I wouldn't say "belting out," seeing that there's always gonna be someone in the car with me until I get my driver's license... but in one more year, you can be sure I'll be doing MORE than belting out!! Hahaha!! :lmao:

I don't drive ... yet, but I 'm listening to music while I 'm out of the house and especially when doing shopping on my own -you can't have always company with you- and I tend to sing aloud joyful songs -well not that loud :D - like "That's the way it is", "ANDHC" etc. and sometimes ppl are staring at me like that :pinch: or  . I guess I can't hit celine's notes very well....

When I get to drive, I've promised myself that when I get to the highway for the 1st time, I 'm going to put "IDAN" or Misled on really loud! :langue2:
