"Taking Chances" album - Official Topic

I've been to Virgin megastore 3 times since the album release and all 3 times there was a man previewing the alum near the entrance. :mdr: Circuit City sold a lot of copies when I was there today, Alicia's album wasn't even on the New Releases section. :D

I just added this one to another thread, but as I'm so excited that something is finally happening here, too, I'll post the link for a (very short) clip on a Finnish channel today

Is this from yesterday, perhaps? The Christmas tree lighting in NY?

Yes, it's from there!

Dion + Oprah = 400-500K albums, easy. Plus, to partially contradict something I said last week about Keys appealing to older listeners -- Keys is relying at least in part on younger fans, who might torrent the album; and Dion has Keys positively whupped in the inspiring-soccer-Moms-to-the-mall category.

Keys's only hope: a rising tide of Dion fans lifts her boat, too (soccer moms go to the mall to pick up Dion, grab Keys while they're at it) and then her more contemporary Top 40/R&B-listening fans put her over the top.

But that's a tall order. Again: Dion has Oprah. Keys is likely all but dead.

Celine Dion looks forward to new sound, new home, new baby

NEW YORK - Shooting is delayed by a hair.

An errant hair positioned on Celine Dion's neck, which sends a set director into the frame to make sure the carefully coiffed star is looking perfect for her umpteenth on-camera interview of the day.

Once all is in place, the director calls: "Rolling!" and Dion jumps on the inadvertent cue.

"Rolling, rolling - rolling on the river!" Dion sings, her fingers snapping and shoulders pumping to the Creedence Clearwater Revival hit, "Proud Mary."

"Let's dance, right?" she says, smiling.

Dion may be best known for belting out the power ballads, but it's rock 'n' roll she grooves to most, she insists as she declares a change in musical direction with her new disc, "Taking Chances."

The Quebec chanteuse, whose Disney hits and saccharine tunes have made her persona non grata on rock radio and hipster hit lists, says it's the grittier stuff that inspired her earliest musical passions and her latest batch of songs.

"Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy singing ballads - a lot," Dion says during an interview with The Canadian Press in New York City, just the latest stop in a global media blitz for the new disc.

"But this time, you know with this new approach...I'm realizing how much I love (the new direction). How much it's part and closer to my childhood music. Listening to my brothers and sisters in the basement of the house playing that kind of music - Janis Joplin and Doobie Brothers and Creedence, Stevie Wonder."

"I grew up listening to the edgier kind of music, so when I started my career with ballads, you know I was 12 years old and I was 15 and I was 20 and I started my career and I started to have success with singing ballads. And I kept going on with that. Until songwriters proposed something else and it was like, 'that's a nice proposition, let's go for it."'

The timing for this stylistic switch couldn't be better. When Dion last released an English-language disc, 2003's "One Heart," the charts were full of like-minded sentimental ballads from acts such as Avril Lavigne, Coldplay and Dido.

These days, radio is dominated by a much harder rock edge, notes Dion's husband and manager, Rene Angelil.

Since exploding onto the pop charts with the "Titanic" theme "My Heart Will Go On," in 1997, Dion's domain has centred on Adult Contemporary, but that's starting to change with this disc, says Angelil.

"They told us from the start that she wouldn't play on Top 40 radio," Angelil says.

"Now, to the surprise of everyone, she is playing on Top 40 radio, actually the number one station in America is called Z100 here in New York and they've been playing her four or five times a day, the song "Taking Chances". And (that) has been followed by about 30 more stations in America - Top 40 stations."

The track is getting a fair amount of attention in Dion's homeland, too, but not all of it good, says Toronto radio host Stu Jeffries of EZRock.

Jeffries, former host of the 1980s music video show "Good Rockin' Tonight," says he likes the new direction but predicts a hard sell for Dion's most dedicated fans.

"We got calls from hardcore Celine fans who said, 'You know, I don't like it, but maybe I just need to hear it a couple more times.' And then some that said, 'You know, I really don't like it. I like the old Celine.' " he said.

"We don't usually get that with a Celine Dion track."

The spunk of the lead-off single, co-written by the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart, is just a taste of more to come. The disc also features a cover of Heart's 1987 hit "Alone," produced by Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody; the soulful "I Got Nothin' Left," co-written and co-produced by R&B star Ne-Yo; and the bluesy, raspy-voiced, "That's Just The Woman In Me."

For her part, Dion - decked out in a flowing earth-grey minidress and silver heels - insists there was nothing calculated about changing her tune.

"When we started to talk about recording a new album, I wanted to make sure ...that I was not going to become another person because the industry has changed. It's not because the radio and the music has changed that you become another person. It doesn't work for me."

"I was ready to make a step forward and maybe twist it a little bit if we had to. But surprisingly, I didn't feel like I had any efforts to make, or an adjustment to make. They proposed me those songs and ...they got even closer to my childhood than ever before. It's even more what I like to sing about. So I think it was a great way to evolve for my career, for my music. At the same time, does it suit the music industry? I hope for me."

It's been more than four years since Dion has made a run at the charts, having taken up residency in Las Vegas with a successful song-and-dance extravaganza at Caesars Palace.

Now that "A New Day" is winding down, she's wasting no time at a bid for more radio hits.

A month-long media tour has included junkets in England, France, Italy and Germany, says Angelil. On Friday, she was to head to Los Angeles to perform on the American Music Awards.

Dion says she's got nothing to prove, but just how she will fare is anyone's guess as she returns to a music market vastly different from the one she left when she began her Vegas residency in March 2003.

CD sales have plummeted in recent years, and music makers and shakers are no doubt watching carefully to see if Dion can buck the downward trend, says Jeffries.

"They call Sony Records in Canada, they call the entire warehouse in that (Toronto) complex, 'the house that Celine built,' " Jeffries says.

"I'm sure there's a lot of execs that are pretty eager to see the results."

Angelil says no artist will ever match the sales heights that Dion once managed, not even Dion herself.

"Forget it. It won't happen," he says, noting Dion has sold more than 180 million albums worldwide, making her the top female artist of all time.

"It's impossible.... The business is completely changed."

Dion launches a year-long global tour in February, stopping in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and North America.

Close at hand will be her six-year-old son Rene-Charles. Dion says that once the tour is complete, she and Angelil plan to settle into a new home in Florida and try for another baby.

"We'd love that," says Dion, who underwent in vitro fertilization to conceive Rene-Charles and still has embryos stored in a New York clinic. "We'll rest a little bit and hopefully we can be parents again."

Dion says her son has already indicated his preference for a girl.

"I think he's hoping more for a little sister and I always say to him: a healthy child is the most important thing," she says.

Dion tours Canada in August 2008. The visit will include a free outdoor concert on the historic Plains of Abraham to mark Quebec City's 400th anniversary.

Hm I liked that article. Most objective one I've read.

"We got calls from hardcore Celine fans who said, 'You know, I don't like it, but maybe I just need to hear it a couple more times.' And then some that said, 'You know, I really don't like it. I like the old Celine.' " he said.

Now WHO DID THAT!!  Lol. just kidding. ^_^

Nice to read about Sony's/Celine's/Rene's take on the album's sales. :) Thanks much for the article!

Alicia Keys is poised to earn her fourth consecutive No. 1 on The Billboard 200 as her new J album, "As I Am," is tops on Nielsen SoundScan's Building Chart, released today (Nov. 14).

If "As I Am" does bow at No. 1, Keys will become only the third act to see their first four albums debut atop The Billboard 200. Britney Spears did it with her first four releases between 1999 and 2003, while DMX's first five albums all started at No. 1 between 1998 and 2003.

Unweighted sales for "As I Am" through the close of business Tuesday (Nov. 13) from the Building Chart's panel of reporters stood at 160,000.

Billboard estimates that the merchants who report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building Chart -- Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Circuit City, iTunes, Border's, Target, Anderson Merchandisers, and Handleman Co. -- represent 79% of the U.S. retail market.

Keys' last release, 2005's "Unplugged," bowed at No. 1 with 196,000. Her first two studio albums, 2001's "Songs in A Minor" and 2003's "The Diary of Alicia Keys," also started at No. 1 with 236,000 and 618,000 units, respectively.

On the Wednesday Building Chart, Celine Dion's new "Taking Chances" (Epic) was in third place with 58,000, while Josh Groban's Christmas set, "Noel" (143/Reprise/Warner Bros.), showed continued strength at No. 2 (67,000). Two other new albums were among the top 10 sellers: the "Now 26" compilation and Led Zeppelin's hits set "Mothership" (Atlantic).

Keys is also outpacing Dion in terms of blog buzz, according to Nielsen BuzzMetrics.
