The 60th Anniversary Celebrations of His Majesty

the King's Accession to the Throne

This year (A.D.2006), His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of the Kingdom of Thailand has reigned for 60 years. The Government has prepared various activities and projects for celebrating this auspicious occasion.

His Majesty assumed his kingship on 9 June 1946 following the sudden death of his elder brother, King Ananda Mahidol. So 9 June 2006 marked the 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne, or the 60th year of his reign. He has become the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history as well as today’s world.

Royal and state ceremonies as well as special activities will continue until the end of 2006. The Government considered that grand celebrations should be held in honor of His Majesty the King and in accordance with royal traditions. The celebrations would also provide an opportunity for Thai people to show their gratitude and loyalty to their beloved monarch.

The 60th anniversary of His Majesty’s accession to the throne is an occasion of rare significance for the Thai people. So they are excited about joining activities and projects, as part of the two-year celebrations.
