We all have voiced our opinions on Sony's horrible choices for singles. Now let's see which one of these songs is the all-time worst decision. For me I'd have to pick "Treat Her Like A Lady." If they wanted to release an uptempo song from that album it should have been "Just A Little Bit Of Love."

I dare to say that 75% of the released singles from her English and French albums were utterly dreadful. Sony Music having Céline recorded RNB, rock, Funk-flavored tracks decided to create and model her according to the archetype of a ballad singer - she was like Michael Bolton or Barbra Streisand or Sony wanted her to be... Most of the album tracks are significantly better than the singles released and many non-fans agree - she shoud have gone her way not Sony's. It was so clear from beginning on that whatever she would not release in the 90's will be a hit BECAUSE she will move her @§§ throughout the world and promote the heck out of her singles herself. Sony NEVER had interest in promoting Céline's edgier side. Never never never. What happened to "Make You Happy" reggae remixes? Never released. Instead Sony instisted on ballads, only ballads, she never ever got to release a serious rocky track and till today she's believed to be a ballad singer primary although she very well recorded soul, gospel, dance, rock, jazz etc. tracks. It's a disgrace to a certain extent cuzz if she would want to be a balladeer she'd have sticked to songs a la Michael Bolton. She would have never recorded "Refuse To Dance", "Us", "Sorry For Love", "Loving Proof", "Ten Days" or "Your Light".

 

The biggest waste of her career is, of course the ANDHC album but it's partially hers and René's fault as they accepted 10 million dollar from Chrysler and forsaken Céline's credibility by recording "One Heart". Nonthelessbutstillofcourse the bottom line is that NONE of Céline's singles was properly adverstized or promoted:

 

Céline Dion - a completely waste of time. They pulled "Did You Give Enough Of Love" release and cancelled the promo imminently after they knew she had to record another album.

 

Colour Of My Love - "Refuse To Dance" was scheduled to be the last single but it was scrapped of course. The hits she's had for this album she promoted herself and was all over TV with TT and TPOL. Ballads, even if TT is arguably her best one.

 

D'eux - not so bad this time but somebody at Sony had to smoke crack cuzz they released LE BALLET instead of Cherche Encore which released after PQTME could have made it to the Top5 of UK charts. and top PQTME's success there. Of course they wanted to make sure she is seen as a balladeer.

 

Falling Into You - a complete promo disaster and commercial success only cuzz of her extensive tournee through the world. Her hits were so calculated even if the album was full of potential hits showing off a different more edgy Céline that you got to see in concerts.

 

Let's Talk About Luf - Another misguided project with ballads all over but of course they promoted and released the most predictible ones while "The Reason" wasn't heavily promoted and flopped vuzz nobody was prepared for such a Céline tune which was a consequence of Sony's previous (lack of) decisive actions. The album was about to flop until the very moment MHWGO shot up the charts.

 

S'il Suffisait D'Aimer - was drown up by Titanic and went straight down the drain commercially.

 

A New Day Has Come - an absolute promotional disaster. She was everywhere and they release "I'm Alive". She recorded Sorry For Love for Europe and Ten Days for the US and they release I'm Freaken Alive. Disastrous. They got what they deserved and supposedly it was Céline's first album that woke Sony up cuzz it didn'T bring much money.

 

One Heart - the big loser in Céline's catalogue. The first time was apparent that you can buy Céline and let her reord an album. For just as much as $10 million.

 

1F4T - the reception was lukewarm cuzz nobody expected Céline to be this edgy and to be this daring. I think it was ahead of its time. If released after Vegas it would have bee huge success with the very same singles.

well for me i think it's GTSW althought i like the song but it's just not right for that time ...

they should have release I surrender instead... or like sorry for love or ten days...

I agree. The album was promoted with the Disney movie song. In my opinion it had great hit potential : a duet with Kenny G, a song written by Prince. Those are/were household names in the music business who could have helped Céline getting commercial success.

I think the Worst Single Releases of all time for Celine are from her most recent albums ANDHC, OH, ANDLILV, and Miracle. The problem started with I'm Alive and GBTSW from ANDHC. I live I'm Alive, but not many stations wanted to play the song because ANDHC was still going strong....so that one is understandable to some extent. But then GBTSW was released. I Surrender would have been a much better choice. From the ANDLILV, IAGLTOW would have been a much better choice than Y&I. I was even hoping that when they released ANDLILV, the would have included I Surrender Live on this CD and released the song as a single at that time.

Goodbye's.... KILLED ANDHC!! RIFOY or HYEBIL where MUCH better single material then GTSW It's a great song... but not single material! IA was a great single! It was very popular! and even serveral weeks number 1 in Belgium! I don't think IS would have done that great.

 

After GTSW all single released went downhill.... singles where postponed, singles where released but the video came way too late... or they was just a radio single and no commercial single! Like CN, YAI, ISMW, BB etc...

 

I think the biggest problem still is that Céline can't or isn't willing to promote the songs, she can't travel arround the world all the time, cos of Vegas... and all we get is usually a playback 'performance'...

 

it's too bad! Cos she could have had some BIG hits from OH, 1f4t, AND...LIL, M and ONNCP... oh well as long as she's happy .......................I guess

I agree completely with what everybody has said! I don't know the reasoning behind which songs get chosen as singles, but I don't think there's much thought going into it these days.

 

The only reason I can think of "Goodbye's (The Saddest Word)" getting picked as a single is because Celine wanted to do it for her mother. Other than that it doesn't make sense at all. If it were because of Shania and "Mutt" then they should have released "If Walls Could Talk" as a single from ATW.

I was disappointed by that album too, defo my least favourite. Feels so contrived, almost pretentious, which is so un-Celine. Doesn't even compare to the likes of Falling Into You or the French albums.

 

BUT I like Miracle even less, listened to it once and put it on a shelf, quite shocked myself. It just means I love her other stuff even more.

If you just think it's not her style,you just limit Celine's talent.

Actually, while they could've picked any other song from ANHDC, like I Surrender, Ten Days, etc. and while Goodbye's perhaps shouldn't have released as a single it wasn't thát bad. The bad and also the good thing was: timing. The song was released at a good timeframe. It was November, it was near X-mas, it was a ballad, it was good. BUT, at that time Celine's mind was somewhere else. She was quite busy with preparations for "A New Day...", she was busy with One Heart and ALSO with 1F&4T. In other words, if she was able to rightfully promote GTSW it could have become a little hit (heck it even outdid IDAN here). "I'm Alive" was a perfect choice as a single. It was summer, it was a catchy up-tempo song. The song did even better than ANDHC in Holland!

 

Anyway, I can't comment on singles after IA/GTSW, because they could have done will, if given the right treatment. Yes, even OH (with its video)..

 

Out of that list I've voted for 'Falling Into You'.. like said previously, they should've released much more up-tempo/rocky/edgier songs, and they didn't. I would've loved to see "Declaration Of Love" or "Your Light" as a single.

I agree, though I doubt they would have released Your Light since it was only a bonus track on some versions of the album.

I still don't like the choice of Goodbye's. It's a boring song. In my opinion The Greatest Reward would have been a much better choice to release as a ballad single from ANDHC

I'm soooooooo schocked that some of you think that OH was the worst! I personally think it was one of the best! I just don't think it was promoted well, that's all. Nevertheless, we're all entitled to our own opinion.

 

Truthfully, I think THLAL pretty much sucked. It's a cruddy song and much too far from Celine's style and who she is.
