CSCfan Posted September 19, 2006 at 11:07 AM Posted September 19, 2006 at 11:07 AM Atlantis prepares for return to Earth 2006/9 By RASHA MADKOUR, Associated Press Writer 28 minutes ago HOUSTON - In a routine familiar to travelers on Earth, shuttle astronauts were spending Tuesday packing their things, indulging in their surroundings for one last day and making sure their vehicle is ready for the ride home. In preparation for Wednesday‘s landing at the Kennedy Space Center after nearly 11 days in space, the Atlantis crew checked flight controls — similar to those on an airplane — and test-fired small jets that are used to orient the shuttle. A chemical leak caused alarm and much adrenaline flow both on Earth and in space Monday. Crew members pulled an alarm and donned protective gear after smelling an oxygen generator overheat, spreading smoke and a burned-rubber smell and leaking potassium hydroxide, an irritant which is used to power batteries. NASA said the leak was not life-threatening, and the crew cleaned up the spill. The shuttle crew embarked on the first mission dedicated to assembly of the international space station in almost four years. Progress on the orbiting lab halted after the Columbia disaster in 2003, when the space shuttle disintegrated while re-entering the Earth‘s atmosphere, killing all seven astronauts aboard. The astronauts woke up Tuesday to a recording of Celine Dion singing "Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi" (Don‘t Leave Without Me), dedicated to Canadian astronaut Steve MacLean. Having 12 astronauts in space at the same time isn‘t a record, said NASA spokesman Pat Ryan. The cosmos have hosted 13 astronauts all at once three times, the latest of which was in 2001, Ryan said.
