Celine Dion Dawns "A New Day. . ." With Sony's High Definition System At New Las Vegas Venue

HDCAM Makes for Triumphant Spectacle at "The Colosseum at Caesar's Palace"

LAS VEGAS (NAB, Booth #SU-4015), April 6, 2003 - Sony recording artist Celine Dion's long-awaited return to live performance follows three years of planning and construction on the new $95 million, 4,100 seat Colosseum at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.

High-definition cameras, switchers, videotape recorders (VTRs), tape, hard-disk devices and PlasmaPro™ monitors from Sony share the technical spotlight, underscoring the growing embrace of HD technology for live performances.

"Like Celine Dion onstage, our high-definition equipment is the star of the show backstage," said Larry Thorpe, senior vice president of content creation systems for Sony Electronics' Business Solutions and Systems Company. "This showcase of her talent, combined with high-definition technology, represents the pinnacle of live HD production."

HD Technology Unites Artist, Audience

Celine Dion's stunning environment was designed to create an intimate space in which no seat is farther than 120 feet from the stage. But through the extensive use of high-definition technology, the audience is brought even closer to the singer and her entourage of 60 musicians, dancers and performers.

Though the Colosseum is large enough to accommodate her fan following, while maintaining close contact, the high-definition visuals, merged with powerful computer graphics, bring it closer still.

The high-definition production system delivers clarity, contrast and richness so images remain robust when projected on a stage-wide 110-by-34-foot screen.

"It's a wonderful example of the type of event for which HD was created," Thorpe said.

Achieving a powerful visual experience begins with the high-quality HD image capture, which is made possible by a pair of Sony HDC-950 multi-format, multi-frame rate portable studio/electronic field production (EFP) cameras.

"Sony's high-definition production equipment delivers a striking realism that allows Celine Dion to connect with her audience and at the same time take her live performance to another level," said Rich Stout, video director for CDA Productions. "At the Colosseum, the HD technology is an essential part of the artist's palette for painting a unique and powerful visual experience."

The cameras are built into the theater's side balconies with monitors mounted onto sidecarts. The HDC-950 cameras' three 2/3" HD FIT CCDs produce stunning images courtesy of all digital processing and a 12-bit A/D converter. The camera allows imaging in 24/25/30 frame progressive and 50/60 interlace to offer a custom look to the pre-produced images that enhance the concert experience.

Sony's MVS-8000 switcher is at the nerve center for creating the visual experience of the concert. The switcher, equipped with two mix effects banks, is itself a versatile and talented performer that offers a deep palette of digital effects, while remaining operator friendly. It is being used to do live switching of the HD cameras and CG graphics, which contribute greatly to the overall production.

The HDW-2000 HDCAMR studio editing recorders utilize the switcher's time line memory to automate the sequence of events and play out the high resolution video.

Backstage, a pair of 50-inch (viewable area, measured diagonally) PFM-50C1 PlasmaPro flat panel plasma displays are used to preview and to monitor the action.

For content creators, Sony's high-definition capabilities help usher in "A New Day..." for a live stage production that Thorpe said "affords new opportunities previously impossible."

He also said that Sony's high-definition equipment provides superb imaging and manipulation capabilities as rich as the creative imaginations of the artists using it. Indeed Thorpe expects that the signature experience created for The Colosseum will inspire others to build on what may become a new genre in theatrical performance.

Added CDA's Stout, "While high-definition multi-format production continues to grow in its primary markets of broadcast and movie production, it is gratifying to see how the aesthetic potential for the medium continues to unfold."

"A New Day. . ." already uses all HD cams for the show. So why not release it in HD? It would be the biggest waste, if they dont.

Caesar's Palace Debuts Largest HD Video Screen in North America

New HD megasystem installed for Celine Dion's 'A New Day...'

LAS VEGAS

Arenas and stadiums of today don't seem quite complete without large-scale video (LSV) screens; now theaters are getting into the action, too. In a stadium or arena, spectators can see their team score a goal or watch the instant replay of an official's controversial call, while a screen in a theater allows the audience to view scene changes electronically and brings the performer "up-front and personal" to its audience.

And that is just what a large-scale video screen does at the newly completed, 4,000-seat Colosseum at Caesars Palace for singer Celine Dion's show, "A New Day..."

This $100 million facility has state-of-the-art theater lighting, sound and automation; but its crowning feature is a huge concave LSV screen measuring 33 feet 7 inches high by 109 feet 2 inches wide, a total of 3,668 square feet. Thought to be the largest seamless interior video screen in North America, it has 5,324,800 individual light emitting diode (LED) red, green and blue "dots," each with 1,024 variations (steps) in lighting intensity.

The lighting may be controlled down to 3 percent brightness, and air circulation fans are momentarily turned off during low audio passages. The digital screen controllers and screen have true high-definition television (HDTV), run at 60 fps-compared to Super 8mm film at 18 fps, 16mm film at 24 fps and a standard television and VHS video at 30 fps. The refresh rate is 240 Hz, avoiding the "tail" on moving images.

Mitsubishi Electric Power Products Inc.'s Diamond Vision Systems Division, based in Atlanta, built the video screen, and it was installed under contract to Mitsubishi Electric Corp. of Tokyo by Wasatch Electric, a division of Dynalectric, of EMCOR Group Inc. of Norwalk, Conn.

Mitsubishi and EMCOR combined to produce and install the $6 million-plus screen. It's controlled by all-HDTV video front-end equipment, including HD cameras from Sony Electronics, which cost an additional $1.6 million.

"One of the many reasons [production company] CDA (Las Vegas) selected our product was because we have successfully controlled a high-definition screen using multiple digital screen controllers," said Todd Stih, regional sales manager for Mitsubishi. "Our processor is unique in that it has true HDTV processing built in. CDA felt these were important features, given that whomever they purchased the screen from would need to use multiple controllers, perfectly synchronized."

If the display runs in lower-resolution "pixel mode," it needs only two display controllers, using one-third the processing power.

Higher amounts of information and resolution created by dot control requires the extra processing power because each individual dot (LED) has full grayscale capability of 1,024 steps. The standard pixel configuration and processing used throughout the industry only provides this amount of grayscale capability for an entire pixel grouping of LEDs.

'SEAMLESS' DOOR

The content creators at Cine FX in Belgium did not want to use "pixel mode" because of the lower resolution, Stih said. Cine FX wanted a resolution that matched the signal they were providing; so dot mode was the only possible way. The Colosseum at Caesars Palace's six screen controllers is a first, however.

In addition, a remote-controlled door is seamlessly built into the screen, through which Dion magically makes her entrance.

The screen has a 1,600 Amp, 208 V, nine giant power cords and three-phase electrical service.

As anticipated, the scope of work included the arrival of 16 of the 64 modules, measuring 6 to 8 feet wide and 7 to 9 feet high, the first of each week for four weeks. One of the modules was specially constructed to include a stage entrance door that will allow Dion to walk through the screen onto the stage, and its arrival was expected by airfreight sometime during the third week.

Due to the Longshoremen Union lockout last fall, all shipments, except perishables, were held up. The module shipments were changed from Long Beach, Calif., to San Francisco, where they would travel by rail. The stage entrance door arrived on time, out of sequence, and was installed first.

Unfortunately, the rail shipment was lost and arrived after the fifth-week completion date. Space allotted for the installation was used up on the stage, so the modules were "flown" overhead or moved on 10-wheel roller dollies across the stage on masonite sheets.

Sixty-three modules arrived unexpectedly one morning with only a telephone call as warning the night before. These modules were in 19 shipping crates, 8 feet square and 10 feet high, and after staging, flanked the pools and fountains at Caesar's Palace.

With up to 350 employees and 151 road vehicles, Wasatch Electric employees mobilized in hours-ripping apart the crates with pry bars, cutting them up with a Skil saw and disassembling the steel transport structures for possible future mobility after Dion's contract expires.

The biggest challenge was to get the 9-foot 4-inch modules through what the general contractor called the "elephant door."

It was 10 feet high, 10 feet 5 inches wide and stood almost five feet off the asphalt grade. To get the modules through the door, workers used a long-fork carriage, extend-reach forklift for the first 60 modules and an extra-wide carriage for the remaining four modules, lifting them by two steel handles bolted on to the top. This barely got the modules in the door, where the load was lifted another four inches to the top of the forks to allow clearances for two 10-wheeled dollies, which measured four inches in height and had a three-inch deep trough for the steel angle iron shipping supports.

The larger modules weighed over 1,200 pounds and were lifted in place by a series of two-ton chain motors and two-ton chain falls, hung from the "grid" some 80 feet above the substage floor. Three quarter-inch plywood sheets with holes for the chains replaced the steel grates. This required three chain motors, one to lower the module from the deck to the sub stage and two pre-positioned at laser level points projected on the ceiling.

The installation of the special module with Dion's stage entrance door was another challenge, as it had to be seamless and undetectable to the audience. This meant the clearances were to the thousandths of an inch-or better yet, to a fraction of a millimeter, as everything on the installation was metric.

The first milestone was a lighting test scheduled to take place the Monday following the Thanksgiving holiday. These meant the electrical and one of the screen controllers had to be completely installed and the rough (one-line diagram) and intermediate inspections had to be completed, with permission to turn on the power to operate roughly one-fourth of the display.

Mark Foster, general manager, Lenny Morrill, senior project manager for Mitsubishi's Diamond Vision Division, the company's engineering representative from Japan and the lighting directors of CDA Productions (Las Vegas) Inc. attended this test.

The final milestone was turning on the whole display. At 10 p.m. one evening, after everyone had gone home, they powered up the main switch, subpanel switches and screen controllers. The screen looked great! There was one vertical black area because of a tripped circuit breaker and a few areas where the technicians replaced 5-inch square tiles.

The bottom line isn't that the video screen is the biggest indoor screen in North America. The bottom line is true HDTV, twice the resolution, 1,024 variations (steps) in intensity for each, individual dot, exceptional color purity, and total brightness control down to 3 percent.

I'm telling SONY should release it the show in DVD and BD. Cause only BD can really showcase full details of this amazing show. I've posted reasons above. This show is produced, made in HD since the very beginning. So they should release it in HD too.

i hope that they will release it soon whahah

so we have a blonde dvd... a long brown dvd with fever etc etc

and a white outfits dvd without any good songs?! :P

they didn't film when she had the long brown hair with Fever still part of the show.

Who think here that there will be the 3 versions? (blond / brown / New)

whats bd, blue ray blabala!? now i should go buy a new dvd recorder!?

lets talk about our wishes for the dvd... celine wishes... not blueray wishes :P

BD is the new industry standard that will indeed require you to buy a new BD-player which however will be able to play all of your DVDs and VCDs. IT's a new format and believe me, you would DIE if you'd see Céline shot in BD. You'd see her every little wrinkle, literall every detail of her eye iris.

This would be a magnificent promotion for the Blu-ray technology. Yet I doubt this will happen... Gosh it'd be amazing!

:w00t: I want the BD !!! please. But there is no doubt the HQ DVD will be release. :thumbsup2:

I wouldn't worry about her voice at all. On most of the tracks that have great choreography she'll be using a lil help from here and there so no need to worry and everyone will be sure to enjpy the show - she must not deliver flop vocals like on the official live CD and all will be good. Actually I believe she not only cancelled the DVD cuzz of her hair but also cuzz of her voice. I'm almost sure these were the reasons.

Then again I'd have an amazingly made DVD rather than a crappily mad BD... but then again there's no way they'd make a crap-BD cuzz already the image quality would blow everyone away at this point. Sony has to think hard about it, Céline is the first best candidate for a great BD release that could help promote Sony its format all over the world.

This is my guess: She had a contract and HAD to release the live CD. Why? Cuzz Air Canada had to have its song "topping charts all over the wolrd" and "being played on every radio station on the planet". :kicking: You And I was specially recorded to be released on this CD so they simply didn't have the choice.

With the DVD on the other hand they had a choice. Céline had a choice. Everything was ready to be released in the fall. But it wasn't released.

if that's the situation celine and rene r both really dumb which i dont think they r .

i mean - celine is an icon , she is the world best selling female artist . even today many record labels will kill to have her - i think that nowdays she is free to make her own decisions with reneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ofcours . my explanation to the CD thing is that celine just gave a regular performance that night and when rene and her people told her it's great for a live CD she smiled and they released it . artists in the leavel of celine can demand whatever it is they want to , if she really wanted to re-record the entire thing there is nothing they could do - she is CELINE DION .

Of course they can but Céline is not a diva - she is a humble performer and entertainer who's grateful at every step of her career. Grateful for the simple fact that she's able to perform and to sing. CD releases are secondary to her and I have no idea why they haven't picked a better night onto the CD - or perhaps all of these 5 nights were as much bad vocally? Who knows? I still think if éline was able to cancel the Millenium concert cuzz of her voice she was also able to cancel the Vegas DVD release cuzz of her hair and bad voice.

Oh and yes, there's a paid contract she or René signed - that doesn't make her free anymore.

It's all kept secret now. 1F4T was suppoed to be her last Sony Music album. She apparently prolonged the contract. It's weird but not uncommon practice in the music industry. They're all big sishies who don't want to reveal all their tens of millions of monthly income or contract profits.

I meant AirCanada. She had a contract which said she has to do ads and sing a song and give some concerts in Toronto area for the employees. The song itself has been written by one of the AirCanada employees and was directed on one of the AirCanada airports. Everything surely sponsored by them.

Hmm interesting.. Then that would make her next French album her 4th or perhaps 5th (if a Jazz album would be released in the meantime). If it's the 5th, it would again be the last of her contract (coz she signs 5-album contracts)..

Perhaps a new Celine era will commence after that (post-2007). B)

Just a couple of weeks ago the new CEO of Epic REaffirmed the interest of Sony in Céline's promotion.

Dear Brandon,

I not only have word from Celine Dion's label, I have word from Celine. Since her last album was released, there has been a shakeup in the executive ranks at her label. Charlie Walk was named President of Epic Records in December 2005. He reported to Don Ienner, chairman and CEO of the Sony Music Label Group, and Michele Anthony, president and chief operating officer. In June, Ienner and Anthony exited the company.

Chuck Taylor, senior editor of Radio & Records and singles reviews editor for Billboard, asked Walk about the label's commitment to Celine as an artist and Walk reaffirmed that commitment. Last month, Chuck met with Celine and her manager/husband Rene Angelil in Las Vegas. He asked them if they were working on a new project, and neither Celine nor Rene said that anything was in the works.

uggghhhh. sorry to be negative about this but im just frustrated! her new costumes are nice but kind of mundane. and she just cropped another song from the already shortened set list.

they better add new songs before recording the dvd and they also better include all the other songs that were cut. damn i was realy looking foward to finally getting a high res shot of TPOL in the red dress <_<

I live my life like a runaway

I hide my dreams in a special place

I'm waiting here for my prince to come

To save me from the darkness...
