Clive and Celine

I've always wondered what Clive thought about Celine. Because during the time of the Divas, there were three major ones connected to three great men. Whitney to Clive, Mariah to Tommy, and, of course, Celine to Rene.

 

Now look at this picture.

 

This is from the 2004 World Music Awards. Celine was performing "Love Can Move Mountains" before she accepted her Diamond Award. That same evening, Clive Davis was there to accept the Legend Award, and he had a special guest - Whitney Houston to perform right before he accepted the award, and proclaimed her as the Greatest Singer in the World. About 30-40 minutes before Clive got this award, Celine got hers. During the performance of "LCMM," at the bridge where Celine says "You believe in me, I believe in you.... if you we believe in each other... nothin' we can do..." and at that point she grabs Clive's chin! :mdr: I thought that was so funny!

 

All these years, I've always wondered what Clive thought about Celine. I've always wondered how much he would love to work with Celine. I've always wondered if he was ever disappointed in Whitney Houston and that he's wearing a mask every time he praises her (during current moments). I can't say anything about Tommy Mattola, because he was definitely close to Celine.

Yes, I was basically networking and trying to get as much exposure. I was on tour and my manager was shopping my demo -- I got some interest in New York and went down to pursue the contract with Clive Davis.

 

 

Deborah was back-up singer for Celine at the 1992 Inaugural Ball for Bill Clinton, where Clive was also present. Clive was definitely there paying attention!

Spago Lures Idol-Makers

 

So it's my last night in Los Angeles, and it's off to the Beverly Hills Spago, where Wolfgang Puck still manages to turn out the most exquisite meal in town. It doesn't hurt that his pastry chef extraordinaire, Sherry Yard, has become a sensation in Hollywood.

 

On Tuesday night Yard prepared hundreds of mouth-watering treats for a banquet at the Beverly Wiltshire Hotel for Cedars-Sinai Hospital. That was after Sunday night, when Sherry made 1,760 desserts for the Governor's Ball after the Oscars!

 

Luckily, she has her parents, who come in annually and help her set up the plates. This fall, Sherry will publish her first cookbook through Houghton Mifflin, with editorial help from award-winning, best-selling food writer Martha Rose Shulman.

 

And who was in Spago to feast on these delights? None other than RCA Records and J Records honcho Clive Davis, who'd come in from New York to meet with American Idol judge Simon Cowell. They were joined by songwriter Diane Warren and two other pals.

 

Clive is busy putting together an album for American Idol star Tamyra Gray. You may recall my story from a couple of weeks ago that Gray and superstar Annie Lennox were both going to be on Arista Records.

 

But when their manager, Simon Fuller, who also created Idol, was late to a meeting with Arista's L.A. Reid, Reid threw Fuller out of his office without seeing him. Fuller went to Davis, and that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Davis is off to see Celine Dion in Las Vegas this weekend, and he's taking many members of his family as well. They'll also see Billy Joel and Elton John perform.

 

Across the room, meantime, was best-selling writer Barbara Taylor Bradford with her husband and two friends. They were busy celebrating producer Marty Richards' Oscar win for Best Picture with Chicago.

 

"If anyone deserves it, it's Marty," Barbara said. "And no one has worked harder."

 

True, true, true.

 

I wonder if he visited her and Rene backstage...

Access Hollywood caught up with J Records chief Clive Davis who weighed in on Kelly Clarkson's win on 'American Idol' on Wednesday. Clive said, "I really think that Kelly was the rightful winner for tonight." He did temper some of the praise given during the competition though. "There's no one there who's a Whitney Houston. There's no one there that's a Barbara Streisand -- or the next Aretha Franklin." Clive suggests Kelly "definitely has special and unique talents. The model for her is the incredible career that Celine Dion has. Kelly needs a team around her who understands her talent -- that understands that today, you need edge in order to get on MTV and VH1."

 

I think Celine would also make a good role model for someone else in his life... Whitney...

Jo Schuman Silver, whose cousin is music mega-mogul Clive Davis, was in Las Vegas on Thursday to see him be honored as a World Music Awards Legend for his outstanding contribution to the music industry. This was a big, glitzy event, preceded the night before by a bang-up party hosted by Davis at the Bellagio. The party guest list included Usher, Alicia Keys, Avril Lavigne, Maroon 5 and Whitney Houston (all Davis stars), Andre Agassi and Celine Dion. Next night, at the ceremonies, the visiting dignitaries who got the most attention were presenter Kobe Bryant ("a star,'' said Silver) and his wife. But Houston -- who sang "I Will Always Love You'' to the man who made her career -- got the closest inspection. It was kind of a comeback for Houston, who's been taking some time off recently for reasons she doesn't discuss, but Silver says she's better than ever, and "my cousin always sees her as that 19- year-old girl that he discovered.''

So, now I know why she grabbed his chin! They had fun together the night before at The Bellagio!

The late Luther Vandross set the bar so high that paying musical tribute to him has to be daunting before an artist even hits the first note.

 

But almost no one makes it sound like it here.

 

Especially not in the beginning of this all-star appreciation of contemporary R&B's premier male vocalist, who died in July at age 54.

 

Opener Mary J. Blige turns in a raw, riveting performance on "Never Too Much" that surpasses just about anything on her recent albums. Usher may not have the lower register of Vandross, but he brings the same sophistication to "Superstar," along with some nice Michael Jackson affectations. And Fantasia — wow! — she just may have made " 'Til My Baby Comes Home" her own with her gritty, gospel-fueled rendition.

 

In "So Amazing's" midsection, however, things get a little gooey. Aretha Franklin is too fond of the melisma on "A House Is Not Home." And on the one duet with Vandross, Elton John sounds uncomfortable and forced on "Anyone Who Had A Heart," digitally paired with the master's fluidity.

 

It's also surprising that Vandross-like "American Idol" Ruben Studdard doesn't make an appearance here. Or that producer Clive Davis didn't use this opportunity to reintroduce his discovery Whitney Houston on, say, "Dance With My Father," rather than the thankfully reserved Celine Dion.

 

Instead, another artist on Davis's label, Angie Stone, reminds us what a wonderful singer she is when she has great material like "Since I Lost My Baby." And Oscar winner Jamie Foxx gets reintroduced as a credible vocalist on the tribute's closer, "Creepin' ."

(Los Angeles, CA – August, 3, 2006) The long wait for Clay Aiken fans is over. RCA Records will release the singer's third album, "A Thousand Different Ways" on September 19th. The project, Aiken's first outing since 2004, combines 10 cover versions of well-known songs from the '70s, '80s and '90s with four brand-new songs.

 

The album is a follow-up to Aiken's debut set, "Measure of a Man," which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart and is certified triple-platinum, as well as the platinum-selling "Merry Christmas with Love," the best-selling holiday album of the 2004 season.

 

For Aiken, the new album's title has multiple meanings. "This is an album of love songs," he explains, "but they are about all different kinds of love. Romantic love, Friendship, Unconditional love. There are a thousand different kinds of love; a thousand different ways to tell someone you love them. And, on top of that, since so many of these songs are covers, it's realistic to say that many of them have been or could be sung a thousand different ways."

 

In fact, Aiken has put his own spin on some of the well-known songs he has recorded for his new album. "These are songs I heard growing up. I loved them then and I still love them today, but we decided to do them a little differently. They have new arrangements and we put our own style on some of them."

 

Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil's "Here You Come Again," a No. 3 hit for Dolly Parton in 1978, stands out for Aiken. "I've always loved that song," he says. "But for this album, we didn't use a country arrangement. It's a ballad version now. Adam Anders produced the most amazing arrangement and I couldn't wait to sing it."

 

Aiken credits Chairman CEO BMG U.S., Clive Davis for coming up with the concept for the album. "When we first embarked on making an album, my executive producer Jaymes Foster and I started out with one or two covers, then we had three. We slowly discovered that it's harder these days to come by songs that are as superb as the songs that I grew up on. Based on that, it was Clive's brainchild that we take classic love songs of the last 30 years and pair them with four new songs. He is a man who not only knows music, but really has his finger on the pulse of what listeners want to hear."

 

Those who have come to expect Aiken to belt out a song won't be disappointed. The album shows off Aiken's vocals in a big way with songs like the Bad English hit "When I See You Smile" and Harry Nillsson's "Without You." But Aiken will surprise fans by singing in a more relaxed style on some tracks than they have heard before, showing a different, sexier side.

 

Aiken fans will also be glad to know he was personally involved with the selection of every track and that he participated in every aspect of the album. "For the first album, most of the songs were chosen ahead of time. I was less of a participant in the process. The second album was a Christmas album, so we naturally chose songs of the season. This new album has much more of me in it. Right from the beginning, Clive and Jaymes wanted to find songs that were right for me. Jaymes told me, "Stay in your lane, but remember it's okay to swerve a little and see where it takes you.' That's exactly what we did."

No, not exactly. Both of these guys got ousted from their record companies. The only thing similar about these guys is that both of them used the financial resources of their record companies. They bought mansions, cars, etc; and just squandered whatever they could! SHAME ON THEM!!!

 

BUT Let me get this straight, based on my information fed to me, and you'll see the twist and how POLITICAL Clive is...

 

Clive was the founder of Arista Records, which he lauched in the mid 1970s and ran over over 2 and a half decades. Arista records was part of a music industry conglomorate - BMG. A conflict arose between Clive and BMG, and he either left or got fired. Well, in 2000, he went on ahead and founded another company, called J Records (read more by clicking here). The first people that he signed on to his record label were Alicia Keys and Luther Vandross. Alicia was a great success for him! In 2002, BMG bought at least 51% in the shares of J Records, therefore placing it under RCA Records. In 2003, BMG executives hired him back and made him Chairman of RCA Records. Then at the beginning of 2004 (maybe because of his success with Alicia Keys), BMG (who owns RCA Records), gave him a promotion where he serves as Chairman of BMG North America. Then, that gigantic merger happened where Sony and BMG merged 50/50 into the mega-industry company SonyBMG; but Clive still remained as chairman of BMG North America. The cool thing for him is that BMG is the mother of Arista and a few others (Arista Records, Burgundy Records, J Records, Jive Records, LaFace Records, RCA Records, Verity Records), and so he's back in control of Arista again, since 2004. Currently he's created quite a big partnership with American Idol, where the artists are signed to one of his record labels. As you may know, Clay Aiken was signed to J Records. The latest is Katherine McPhee, who is signed to RCA Records. So, you see, Clive is quite a smart man, and now he has like 3 jobs all rolled into one... and multiple financial resources.
