By Karen Thomas, USA TODAY Former 'N Sync singer Lance Bass, 27, has announced that he is gay and in a "very stable" relationship with The Amazing Race winner Reichen Lehmkuhl, 32.The former boy-band star knew "from childhood on" that he was gay, he tells People magazine, which arrives on stands Friday. After revealing his news to friends and family and feeling the daily pressure of gossip rumors, Bass decided he was ready to go public. Bass met Lehmkuhl last year, when the former Air Force pilot signed on as the singer's real estate agent. "We've been dating for a few months," the singer says. "This is a huge turning point in my life and also in his life, too." Lehmkuhl has been focusing on acting and gay rights activism since winning Race in 2003. Bass stayed quiet during 'N Sync's heyday because he feared that coming out would hurt the band. "I was in this popular band, and I had four other guys' careers in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was gay), it would overpower everything." He never told his bandmates — Joey Fatone, Justin Timberlake, J.C. Chasez and Chris Kirkpatrick — though he believes some suspected. Five years ago, Fatone was the first to find out, and Bass told the others in the past year, except for Timberlake. "I haven't had the conversation with Justin yet." The final step was going public with a message Bass says he hopes to drive home: "I am not ashamed. ... I'm not devastated going through this. He was in a boyband, is pretty much your stereotypical gay guy, is in love with Celine, is one of Kathy Griffin's friends, etc. I don't think it was all that much of a surprise - at least for me.
