This is an amazing performance. I do not have any recollection of the actual time that Celine sang it even though I watched those Olympics. But recently I have become such an enormous CD fan that I downloaded this. I have played this video repeatedly and ..... y gosh, it's awesome (to quote Celine's favourite adjective !!). I watch it and am truly inspired. Such genuine passion. She is incredible.!!!

I know we've been discussing Celine at the Olympics - in the context of a (dream) Paris 2024 appearance - in the Vegas thread, but it's probably best placed here.

 

And sorry, no actual Celine content here, but there's an interesting article on BBC re the apparent debate happening in France about whether they should invite Aya Nakamura to perform at the opening. You can read it here: https://www.bbc.com/...europe-68552093

The entire article is worth a read, but I thought this bit particularly interesting:

 

"For President Macron, this is the strongest argument for inviting her to the Olympics.

According to the unconfirmed reports, she would sing a chanson of the late Édith Piaf - thus updating a French classic and showing it off before a modern, multi-ethnic worldwide audience.

Curiously though, a majority of the French public appears to disagree.

An Odoxa poll taken after the story broke found that, though Nakamura is extremely well-known with 80% recognition, only 30% of those asked had a good opinion of her.

Some 73% of those who knew her music said they did not like it, and a clear majority of 63% said she should not sing at the Olympics opening."

 

I wonder how Céline would fare in such a poll. Man, I so wish Celine were well enough to make an appearance.
