Bellamy Posted May 27, 2006 at 06:32 PM Posted May 27, 2006 at 06:32 PM New Orleans residents to get free Wi-Fi network EarthLink has won approval to build a wireless mesh network for the city of New Orleans. Much like the earlier win of the San Francisco wireless contract, EarthLink will offer a low speed free service, along with a paid high-speed network. 15 square miles will be covered. The free service will burst up to 300 Kb/s and will run without advertisements. For a fee, a higher 1 Mb/s - up and down - service will be offered. Users will receive wireless signals from MetroMesh wireless routers affixed on the tops of light poles. Motorola Canopy wireless links will bundle up signals from several blocks and send them to a central station.Source: http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/05/26/neworlea...hlink_wireless/ Quote Please support the forum by ordering everything through our special Amazon.com link Click here. winforlife Posted June 1, 2006 at 10:14 PM Posted June 1, 2006 at 10:14 PM Don't they need homes, running water and, at the very least, computers first?<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, homes, water and removal of rotting garabage are in dire need. People are being evicted from mobile homes while waiting for permanent housing or rebuilding existing homes. Imo, computers aren't top priority esp. since the levees may not be able to sustain another category 4-5 hurricane like Katrina. New Orlean's sinking problem due in part to the inadequate levees to support the low lying areas. If interested, the below article goes in further detail.http://www.comcast.net/news/science/index....l&cvqh=sci_nola Quote http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/LKlafter1/1367035680_small.jpg
