Who's gonna emcee the Junos? Your guess is as good as ours

The host of the 2005 Juno Awards in Winnipeg will be unveiled tomorrow -- but if Sum 41 bassist Cone McCaslin has his way, he and his pals will be kings of the MTS Centre on April 3. "Greig (Nori) our manager said, 'Can I put you on a short list for hosting the Junos?' And we e-mailed back and said that would be fun. I'd get to f-- around in front of the whole country," McCaslin told The Sun recently.

 

He'll have to wait like everybody else until tomorrow -- but speculation from industry insiders has the goofy pop-punks from Ajax, Ont. as odds-on favourites along with Avril Lavigne. Both would pull in young viewers, both are sure to be nominated and both are international stars, which would increase the Junos profile south of the 49th.

 

On the other side of the coin, one source thought Lavigne might be too much of a cold fish to play host.

 

"I just don't see Avril hosting. She's just so anti-Duff," he said, adding Hilary Duff's bubbly personality and youth appeal would make her an ideal host. Too bad she's not Canadian.

 

As for other candidates, Celine Dion could be in the running. She hosts her own show in Las Vegas, is an international superstar and, as one industry official said: "You can't keep her away from the Junos." He, of course, requested anonymity.

 

Singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk's name has also been mentioned. She is a good speaker, is local and has that smile cameras love so much. Ditto Sarah McLachlan, minus the local part.

 

Then there's Jann Arden. Her name pops up every year, mainly because she has hosted before and has a great sense of humour.

 

No one would confirm anything yesterday, because CARAS has a deal to release the info first on host network CTV (which also broadcasts Canadian Idol, so we can't rule out Kalan Porter as a host).

 

But that isn't going to stop us from speculating. Here's a rundown of some likely candidates.

 

SUM 41

 

PROS: They're fun boys with a great sense of humour and the ability to laugh at themselves a la The Barenaked Ladies, who hosted in St. John's in 2002. Could make for some great spontaneous moments. Would attract younger fans.

 

CONS: Potty humour could get tiresome, and CTV censors might have to work too hard to keep up.

 

INTERNATIONAL APPEAL: Big. These guys are global stars, and their appearance this week on Saturday Night Live -- which forced them to bump a local concert till Jan. 30 -- will only expose them to more people.

 

POTENTIAL ENTERTAINMENT VALUE FROM 1 TO 10: 9

 

AVRIL LAVIGNE

 

PROS: One of the country's hottest stars, with a sophomore CD still high on the charts. Represents the new school of Canadian stars.

 

CONS: Comes across as a sullen teen with too much eye makeup. Doesn't seem like much fun.

 

INTERNATIONAL APPEAL: Huge. Recent purchase of house in L.A. with beau Deryk Whibley of Sum 41 got her into supermarket tabs.

 

POTENTIAL ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: 5

 

CHANTAL KREVIAZUK

 

PROS: Kreviazuk is good-looking, well-spoken, has a huge smile and plenty of charisma. Being from Winnipeg would up local content.

 

CONS: Has spent more time lately writing songs for other artists than pursuing her own performing career.

 

INTERNATIONAL APPEAL: Put it this way, she's no Shania.

 

POTENTIAL ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: 6.5

 

CELINE DION

 

PROS: Charismatic, mega-famous -- and bilingual.

 

CONS: Dion represents the old school of Canadian music and probably wouldn't attract those young viewers advertisers seek. Never heard her tell a joke. Plus she hasn't lived up here for ages.

 

INTERNATIONAL APPEAL: Monstrous. Much like Godzilla.

 

POTENTIAL ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: 6

 

JANN ARDEN

 

PROS: Arden is one funny lady, good with a written line and quick with snappy one-liners. Is from the West and has hosted before.

 

CONS: Not a lot of appeal to the young demographic.

 

INTERNATIONAL APPEAL: Mild.

 

POTENTIAL ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: 10

 

NEIL YOUNG

 

PROS: He's Neil Young. What more is there to say.

 

CONS: Doesn't seem to be the most capable public speaker. Comes off as a aloof. Comedic qualities unknown. No guarantee he'll show up and even if did, he could cancel at the last minute.

 

INTERNATIONAL APPEAL: Huge.

 

POTENTIAL ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: 7.5

 

SARAH MCLACHLAN

 

PROS: Talented and amiable, good-natured, big fanbase, funny, telegenic and respected.

 

CONS: What bad can we say about McLachlan? We don't want to go to hell.

 

INTERNATIONAL APPEAL: High.

 

POTENTIAL ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: 7

 

KALAN PORTER

 

PROS: Canadian Idol is on Juno network CTV, so don't count this guy out. Would pull in the young girls who think he's dreamy.

 

CONS: The host of an award show shouldn't be the winner of a talent show. We would call shenanigans.

 

INTERNATIONAL APPEAL: Kalan who?

 

POTENTIAL ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: 4.

In other Juno news:

 

- Ticket details for the April 3 awards show will be released Feb. 1 along with a "big name" performer.

 

- CARAS has picked Halifax as the host city for the 2006 Juno Awards, March 31 to April 2.

 

- When announcing Halifax as 2006 Juno host city, CARAS donated $10,000 of musical instruments to students at A. J. Smeltzer Junior High as part of its BAND AID program.

 

- CARAS has extended its broadcast deal with CTV through 2007.
