The first time you heard Céline's voice crack

I just re-watched the amazing acoustic rendition of "Love Still Exists" from the Quebec-New York show from 2001 and I can't say enough how much I love this version. So fragile, sad, depressing....and these lyrics make you :(

Anway I remember how I panicked the first time I heard this rendition. Everything was superb up to the main refrain where her voice really changed its key and it didn't sound like her at all. It was so weird to hear Céline Dion's voice crack. Truly something I have never ever heard before. I guess it was already a sign of a "new Céline" coming (which is NOT negative at all, not at all, it was just new at that time). I was so shaking especially considering me being an extreme SCF back then. OMG hahahahaah

It was quite a shock to me to hear THE perfect voice to be so powerful on one hand and on the other so DAM fragile! It also took me a while to appreciate and understand that it's all a voice is about - emotions, rawness, control and the knowledge it can brake EVERY second you use it. Maybe it's way too much interpreted but I think THE crack on THAT song in THAT context meant so much, so much fear...

Maybe LBDB on Junos 1999 is her first performance and one of the most noticeable one to me. But it's amazing anyway. Also some of her performances in Millennium concert cracked too. I can't remember any earlier performance right now.

And how did you feel? Any sentiments at all? Must have been weird to say at least?

She made three public appearances in 2001:

The telethon with GBA

The show Quebec-New York

and her supposed comeback performance on the L'adisq gala with Garou.

I kinda feel shocked. But I really like the rawness in her voice.

It's few days after she sang GBA in USA. She did it for 911 victims.

Yep, Rene said it was planned all along that she would appear for the first time on national TV with Garou singing "Sous Le Vent" - a weak performance as it was she looked truly ravishing!

Unfortunately due to the events that occured in 2001 her performance hasn't been paid attention to as much.

Anyway she has been much closer to her French audience and her comeback performance was in French and like 5 months before the CBS special. ;)

I think her real comeback performance is GBA on the 911 telethon.

Celine's voice never sounds so bad, even when her voice cracks.

What a destructive thread Suir. :P

Anyway, yes that performance of L'Amour Exist Encore (stop saying it in English I got really confused "did she ever sing it live in English (I know a studio version exists in a locked room) no she couldn't have, I would have known, but since it's Suir who said it it could be true..." :P ) I really really liked that performance and I listened to it many many times, oooh what a great performance. But I wasn't really good at what's wrong and right when it comes to tones back then (and sure ain't it now either but a little bit better) so I guess I didn't pay as much attention to it as you did. I will go check it out anyway since it was so long ago since I watched it.

The first time I really reacted was around that time too but with another performance performed a few years erlier - Le Blues Du Buisnessman (which someone mentioned above). And how it made me feel? I was like "hey wait a minute, what was that?!" and played it again and thought "hey she sings like me" :D (kidding). And yea, it was wierd, but hey it only showed she's mortal. And I so love it that she did it live and I really don't hope she feels bad about that performance...

Well anoter time which I recall is the performances on Oprah '02, perhaps it was ANDHC. But then to hear those were pre-recorded made me quite confused.

EDIT: I have seen it now and now I remember, you are talking about the part where she sings "Au-delà de la violence". Yes I understand you found it dramatic. But I think it also adds a spice. Even though it wasn't meant to be it lifted the performance, even though perhaps a critical person would say different. It added more soul and strenghtened the sadness. It is like when you see someone (on TV or film) crying... well just having water running down their cheeks don't do much, but if their voice cracks it brings it all to a totally different level.

For example: In Desperate Houssewives when Susan is dressed in a wedding gown and Mike leaves her. In that show that kind of scene would be funny. And the actress of Susan did now something much more than she usually does (I don't know perhaps it is just character). She gave soul to her character and compassion. It was horrible (in a good way, coz it was meant to be horrible) and heart breaking to see her reaction. I mean even in series which are drama series you don't see that high level of acting. And you certainly didn't expect it here. The point is, hehe, that Susan's voice cracked - a lot! And I really felt for her (even though I usually don't do that, it's TV and that show is just fun). Still thinking of it. A very good prestation of the actress of Susan. And just because she was brave enough to let her voice crack. A lot of actresses would never do that simply because of pride and frightened they'll look rediculous.

Bravo to the actress of Susan and bravo to Céline (even if Céline's wasn't planned)!

I must say, when I hear her voice crack, I shrug my shoulders and move on. I don't really care much, I just consider it a performance I won't keep and wait for one I will. The LBDB from the Junos is still a keeper though, and I haven't heard the L'AEE from Quebec. Doesn't matter to me, I suppose. That's why I'd rather hear a raw, imperfect performance than something played back because even if she messes it up, 1) that doesn't make me feel worse about her and 2) it could very well make a great performance. I know from experience in music that often mistakes can be/inspire moments of greatness that you hadn't thought of before. Edited by VanMerlin

What on earth are you guy's listening to her voice doesn't crack, or if it did I sure didn't hear it. You guys have got to stop worrying about her voice. Is Celine worried - I don't think so, so why should we worry about something that is hardly noticable, at least to me it's not noticeable.
Thanks Celine for the great memories. I will never forget you

Hellooooooooooooooohooooooooooooo! You are talking about my all time favourite performance of Céline here... I watched it live, it was in the middle of the night here and it made me cry. Not because her voice 'cracked', as you say, but because of the emotions and pain in her voice. If you listen to the lyrics, you will hear her voice 'cracks' at the moment she sings the sentences that are so suitable for the ocassion. The moment the audience applauds, for example.

I dont agree with you that her voice cracks because its not as strong as it used to be before her break, its obviously that emotions influenced her voice at that time. I do agree with the fact that her voice was at its best in the 90's, but its logical. She did everything to keep her voice in top-shape at that time, while she has a normal life now and does not go to extremes anymore. And I think thats good, because she is not a machine, but a human being! :thumbsup2:

I don't pay too much attention. I remember she had some thing kinda wrong on her MHWGO at the 98 Grammy, if I well remember it. Not that I care too much....

L'AEE from Quebec. You can't expect perfect rendition from the person who's been singing for 2 years only in the shower.

Even if you stop talking for 2 days and after that begin to just talk your cords can crack. And I bet there're not that many singers like Celine among of you ;) Because for singers it's even more obvious effect.

And it had nothing with the future changes in her voice. It wasn't a sign and wasn't begining.

The first time I've heard her voice cracked a bit was some performance of All by myself back to 1996 which was broadcasted on radio-show. She missed the time when she should begin to sing her part and thus she had no breath enough to sing it as long as the music demanded. She lost it...It was the first time ever I heard she did a mistake in a song. Not only the voice cracked but she messed that moment really bad. I don't know what she was thinking about, whom maybe she was looking at that moment thus that she lost her attention, the reason. :)

Well, that was funny almost. Worth to shake my head that time. Not more. :)

By the way, that performance of LBDB in 1999. I didn't care that much about that mistake she did at the start but I was thinking that for her it sounded very embarassing probably. I wanted to calm her down saying it's ok she's singing well anyway :)

I just watched it, and it was beautiful! If you ask me, the only time I ever noticed that her voice sounded below par ever was on the new recordings that she has done, like JNVOP and all the 1F&4T album songs.

Also, that performance of le blus du businessman on the symphonic show was a little weird, (though understandable, I really dislike that song mainly because it has so many long and loud notes in it, it would hurt anyone to sing!) but for me it was more the fact that she couldn't sing des mots qui sonnent properly at the millenium concert, which was a dissapointment because I love that song, and I love the way she used to sing it.

I don't think her voice cracked on L'amour existe encore from Molson Centre. Not in the way as she cracked on Juno Awards Blues. Her voice sounds really soft and fragile, with so much emotion and she lets herself drift away by that emotion, it sounds perfect to me, and no cracks in it.
