South Dakota first to accept abortion bill

Recommended Posts

South Dakota is the state I am from and we are also the first to accepts a ban on all abortions except those that would endanger the mother.

Even if the person was raped or incest they would not be able to get an abortion. The only problem is that the day after bill could still be used but after they take a pregnancy test they are no longer able to attempt any form of abortion.

A measure that would ban nearly all abortions in South Dakota is on its way to Governor Rounds.

The South Dakota House gave final legislative approval to the measure today. It passed 50-to-18. Rounds has said he's included to sign the bill if it has no technical defects.

The measure is intended to prompt a legal fight on the legality of abortion. It would become law July first if Rounds signs it.

The bill already had passed both houses of the Legislature, but the House had to agree to a Senate amendment before it could go to the governor.

Just tell me what you think about this ban and if you think it is the wrong approach to this problem.

I personally believe it is very good but people will fight it for years to come and there are other ways to have a miscarriage. But I am proud that South Dakota has seen it as a problem and wants to protect these incoccent children.

Another more descriptive article

This article brings up about a good point about people just going out of state to get an abortion.

Kathi Di Nicola, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa in Sioux City, said her clinic already serves some South Dakotans and is ready to assist others if needed. The Planned Parenthood clinic in South Dakota has performed about 800 abortions a year.

I really dont know what they can do to help these. I guess it is another thing that will have to be figured out in the future.

I also brings up that the doctors can go to jail if they perform an abortion.

A raped woman can't have an abortion?

This is WRONG.

I have a strong opinion about abortion and I agree with the law in my country (allows abortion until the 12th week of pregnancy only if the mother is in danger, the child is seriously ill or the mother was rapped) and I think it's pretty unfair for a woman who was rapped to have to live with this big trauma.

That's just wrong. And living in Europe, I can't believe that abortion is still banned in some countries like Portugal and Poland. People should have a choice.

I'm glad the abortion is banned in my country, except for the reasons already mentioned. It would become banal and normal to do it.

This would be disastrous. People having unprotected sex because it's ok to get pregnant because you can have an abortion. Then would come the diseases...

It was not a decision from the goverment. It was made a referendum (or whatever you call it) where everyone voted for it and our citizens decided to go against it. It's our choice and we don't have to be criticized for it.

I don't agree, I think if someone wants to have an abortion, they should be able to access one, sure, have rules and maybe a process people have to go to, and don't promise that everyone can get one as soon as they want, but I don't think it should be illigal.

"30 seconds to do abortion without pain" advertisement is everywhere here, on road, bus....

I really hate it. It's so annoying. Why they need to advertise that. And it sounds like it's a piece of cake.

Hey, that's what education is for! Plus morals! It's never been illegal here, and people only have it done when there's no other way. Pregnant teenagers who decide on behalf of abortion are rare cases. We have really effective sexual education classes; condoms, birth control, and the day after pills are really easy to get. Women don't abuse their rights here. As for diseases, believe me, there are diseases everywhere, even in countries where abortion is banned. People don't get infected with HIV here through sexual intercourse, it only spreads among injecting drug-addicts. Sure there are exceptions, but it's such a small percentage.

I THINK IT IS MORE WRONG TO FETCH A CHILD UP WHEN ITS NOT WANTED

IF I WAS RAPED I WOULD HAVE TO GET AN ABORTION EVERY TIME I WOULD LOOK AT THAT CHILD I WOULD REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED

IMAGINE TELLING THE CHILD THERE FATHER RAPED ME

I guess morals are circumstantial, so I can see where Mozhina is coming from.

NEWS UPDATE

Today our Governor Mike Rounds officially signed the bill into law. If it continues it will offically become law some time in June or July. It sounds like Planned Parented Hood is already dediciding to sue.

Like everything in life it should be down to us to make our choices, not the goverment

These young teenagers who get pregnant, wrong or right, told they must have there child, end up harming , or suicide..

Tell me who has the right to decide anyones life, but themselves

I think there should be better learning out there,

I agree with you...

You can't force a person to become a mother. :ermm: I don't want to think about that poor kid who's going to grow up in a family that didn't expect him...

Oh good. Okay, so they pass a bill that takes away a fundamental human right...choice. Then, they say to a young girl or woman, "So, you've been raped on the street, or you've been raped by your father/brother/uncle/man next door and now you're going to have a baby...well what a blessed miracle!" And then she suffers nine months of mental, emotional, and physical agony knowing what is growing inside of her. Then she gives birth to the baby, and she...

a) Is the shame of her family and is kicked out of the house.

b. Has no choice but to keep the child, which pains her with every sight and every cry.

c) Has the child in an unknown location and throws it in a dumpster, and may even have hidden the pregnancy all along because of the shame. Perhaps she even ran away from home and put her parents through agony.

d) Puts financial weight on her parents and or the system because she can't care for the baby herself. I mean, what if she's a thirteen year old victim of incest? That can ruin her life and her body for the rest of her living days.

e) Puts the child into the adoption circuit where it will be lost in the system, probably go from one foster house to the next, and there you have another two broken souls...the mother and child.

So the system says you can't have the choice of what happens in your own body, not even if you were violated, but where is that system when the mother suffers from debilitating anxiety, incredible amounts of stress, and the child suffers through a life of misery? Is the system there with free housing for these raped women and their babies? Is the system going to give them free therapy and job training to get their life on track...which was taken away when they were violated in the first place? Is the system going to give them an allowance to take care of the child that they didn't want to have in the first place? Is the system going to pay for all the medical bills required from conception to birth and the first three years after? Does the system have any idea what having a child does to your life, to your body, to your family, and to the system itself?

Way to go, South Dakota. Thank you for treating women like sub-human beings.
