Penalty in Taiwan: Pay fine or play Mahjong

Drunk drivers in Taiwan can now choose their penalty: Pay a fine or play mahjong with the elderly.

Petty criminals in Taiwan are increasingly being handed a variety of civil duties rather than serving time in prison or cleaning the streets, said Hsu Yi-ling, an official at the Taoyuan Prosecutors Office in northern Taiwan.

Playing the popular Chinese tile game of mahjong with token money has taught offenders to love and care for the elderly, Hsu said.

Mahjong is not boring at all. It's a game kind of like Poker. People can play it for many hours and still want to play.

BTW, how you guys play Mahjong? Can you read CHinese on it? Or you have English version Mahjong? :lmao:

lol!!! why i didn't know this at all!!!! it's very fuuny to hear strange things about your country and you know nothing about it...

so i did a little research...

okay. it's in today's news. so it's real but there're some minor differences...

it's like a social service for those who are sentenced "prosecuted later" (sorry, know little about the legal terms...)... and there's no mentioning of choosing between paying the penalty and playing mahjong. (but it could be true. if you cross the red light here, you can choose a 10US fine or a 1-hour (or 2?) "road crossing safty" lesson.... but actually now everyone here crosses the red light, so.... haha)

and it's not for the whole taiwan, it's a plan in Taoyuan Prosecutors office...

i doubt if drunken driver can choose that... since it's not a "petty crime" (there's no mentioning of this in the news i found either) drunken driving get really serious here in taiwan. so many people died from this.... maybe what they mean is those who don't pass the "alcohol test" when driving. not those who really cause accidents...

haha.. it's fun though....

the news i found (in traditional chinese):

oh and by the way, mahjong should be very very fun!!

though it's really complicated for me.... you have to invest time on playing it as well!

many older Asian people play mahjong for money here. I've never played it before, not really into these thinking games. :whistling: In the US, we refer to crossing the red light as "jay walking" so many do it that no one cares even though you could be fined. :giggle:

lol~

mahjong is really an interesting game!

my parents usually spend a whole night playing it.

rules are different among different regions. i think rules in Taiwan are more complicated than ours in Shanghai. HK's may be the most complicated ones. what about yours, bellamy?

but i wonder if you knew the mahjong game before?
