Céline is back fresher than ever and it's no coincidence that she's also returned to her roots. This is Céline's first French-language disc in years, and it's stripped down - guitars, bass, drum - to match the retro Vegas/1970s look of the album and videos. Not any singer   

 

I have to totally disagree with the other comment i read about Celine Dion. How could oe say that she is avocalist, not a singer (if I got it right)? Excuse me, but we are talking about Celine Dion here, the same one who's got three stars on three differnet Halls of fame (Hollywood, Montreal and Toronto); the same won who's won God-knows-how-many awards, including an Oscar, the same won who's sung for so many important people including the pope and the Queen Elizabetth II, among many others...I could name you all of her exploits one by one, but I think the picture is pretty clear: we ain't talking about no Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera here, we're talking about an ICON that is considered so because us, the public, made her one...as for her music being cheesy , well, what do you want, it seems that that's what she's comfortable singing and that's what the public likes, otherwise it wouldn't be so poular.

 

People can hate as much as they want, it's a fact that Celine is probably THE biggest diva of the 20th century. And contrary to all theses other divas she's often been associated to, she still has a career that 's going stronger then ever. So the people who DON'T like her music should at least give her the respect she deserves.

For the record, that 2nd one is a reply to an earlier comment (so not to the review itself, which is quite positive):

No one questions that Céline Dion is a powerful vocalist but as a singer she's a frigid dud and this CD just further cements this fundamental truth.

 

Aren't they the same thing, being a vocalist and being a singer?

 

No, they are not--allow me to clarify: a vocalist is someone who has the technical ability and range to hit certain notes and work n' warp them for their maximum impact, a singer is someone who can relay an emotion or an idea through their use of notes, lyrics, stage presence and emotional connection to the audience..

 

You can have a singer whose range as a vocalist is finite but because they have a deeper understanding of the intangibles of music can hold, woo and mesmerize a crowd into an adoring puddle. A great vocalist can hit all the notes and be physically there doing everything right but never fully connect with the music or the audience because there is something inherently hollow and uncreative in their process. This is who Céline Dion is.

 

Music critics and media suck-ups (especially those from Quebec and Canada) tend to be so mesmerized by her vocal prowess that they routinely forget that as far as musical content is concerned her song choices are almost exclusively vanilla-like and siropy. Go on, I defy any one of you to tell one Céline Dion song from another! Heck, pick any CD and mix n' match the songlists and I bet you that all of her material bleeds into one sappy lovefest.

 

There is no artistic evolution in Céline Dion's career, unless you include better production value and bigger exposure as signs of evolution.

 

Sorry but no matter what language she's abusing she'll always be a Bette Midler/Barbra Streisand Vegas act wannabe. This recording is just further proof of that.

 

As tu compris, Céline? Est-ce assez clair pour toi maintenant?

That album is SO underappreciated! should have been far more successful. Still it's a gem and it did well enough for the promo Céline did.

Well it's a fact. The Academy of Motion Picture, Art and Science (the Oscar Academy) does not give awards to singers. My Heart Will Go On, is a song, and the creator(s) of a song is a composer and a writer. It is the song which is nominted for an Oscar and when a song wins it is the creator of the song which the award goes to. Céline didn't create My Heart Will Go On, therefor she didn't win the Oscar. Céline performed the song, performers don't get the award unless they have created the song (Phil Collins in 2000). So James Horner was awarded the Oscar in 1998 for his song My Heart Will Go On.
