Céline is #2 in the Pollstar's Top 25 tours chart

NEW YORK -- Prince is the concert tour king. He's in the No. 1 spot on Pollstar's Top 25 tours chart for 2004, grossing $87.4 million.

His 69-city/96-show tour was "by far the biggest tour he has ever done," Gary Bongiovanni, editor-in-chief of Pollstar, the concert industry trade publication, told The Associated Press. "It's kind of a renaissance for him."

Celine Dion, who's been appearing at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for a long string of shows, was in second place, coming in at $80.4 million, followed by Madonna, $79.5 million; Metallica, $60.5 million; and Bette Midler, $59.4 million.

Other acts in the top 10: Van Halen, Kenny Chesney, Sting, Toby Keith and Elton John.

It was a good year for country music. Chesney's tour had a total gross of $50.8 million and Keith's grossed $43.7 million. Tim McGraw, Shania Twain and Alan Jackson's tour with Martina McBride were also among the top 25.

Bongiovanni said he wasn't surprised that most of the top acts were familiar faces.

"Just because baby boomers are older now doesn't mean that they turn into Glenn Miller band fans," he told the AP Thursday. "They are a large population base of people that have the funds."

Usher and John Mayer were two of the younger acts to gross over $20 million.

"I don't know if today's kids look at music the same way the aging baby boomers do," Bongiovanni said. "We don't seem to be developing the long-term headliners."

Another factor could be the cost of tickets, which for the top 100 acts came at a record average of $52 each.

The most expensive concert ticket? Elton John, at an average of $158 per ticket.

Christenings are becoming a regular stop on the celebrity party circuit.

They reached a new level of extravagance Thursday when soccer star David Beckham and his pop star wife, Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham, threw a star-studded baptism bash for sons Brooklyn, 5, and Romeo, 2.

The pre-Christmas party at the Beckhams' home in Sawbridgeworth, England, looked more like a Hollywood premiere than a religious ceremony.

Pop star Elton John and partner David Furnish, the children's godfathers, arrived by silver Rolls-Royce. Elizabeth Hurley showed up in an ivory gown with a plunging neckline. (The invitation requested "modest attire.")

Three of Victoria Beckham's former Spice Girls bandmates also turned out: Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Melanie Chisholm. Only Melanie Brown ("Scary Spice) was absent.

The Church of England baptism, which was held at a private chapel on the mansion grounds, was followed by a six-course dinner and dance. Reported cost: $900,000. Thursday's party might be just a rehearsal for what's to come, because Victoria, 30, is expecting the couple's third child in March.

Celebrity baby christenings are becoming all the rage, especially in Europe, where the Catholic Church is more prevalent, event planner Diann Valentine says.

Like the Beckhams, most celebs host christenings in their homes rather than in a church to maintain privacy, she says. This month, Valentine planned a home "quasi dinner-cocktail party" and christening ceremony for 1-year-old Lucky Rose, daughter of Cedric the Entertainer and wife Lorna, and 50 guests.

Other celebrity christenings that have made news:

• On Aug. 14, Latin singer Marc Anthony and ex-wife Dayanara Torres set aside their differences for the baptism of their 1-year-old son, Ryan. Anthony's new wife, Jennifer Lopez, did not attend.

• When singer Celine Dion and husband Rene Angelil baptized baby son Rene-Charles in July 2001, the Montreal ceremony was broadcast on Canadian TV.

• Madonna and Guy Ritchie threw out the red carpet for the baptism of baby Rocco in Scotland in December 2000, the day before their wedding. Sting and Stella McCartney were witnesses.
