The dangers of spamming

I'm just curious as to why the moderators of this forum allow such blatant spamming on the board. All these topics are nothing but thinly veiled methods of increasing peoples post counts. It takes up huge amounts of space on the boards and often topics with a proper point to make get lost in the jumble created by what seem to be the same individuals all the time. I'm sure if you were to check the statistics then there are certain users who have rarely if ever posted outside some of these "games".... well anyone got any thoughts on this subject?

Well what better way to bring it to their attention than start a discussion on the subject! But really I don't believe it is just their business. It affects all users of this board to try and wade through a pool of spam to try and find a topic to which they want to reply

You can just ignore those spam topics, if you don't like. and we think spammers are way better than leechers.

They can be ignored in so much as I can just not read them (which I don't anyway) but they are generally 9 of the first 10 topics on the page and occasionally the one interesting topic in it is lost among them. I'm just curious as to why there is no restriction on spamming when there is on just about every other board on the net!

This is off topic section. They can post what they like, express what they're thinking right now, and have fun with friends here. What's wrong with it? We do control spam in Celine Section.

there's nothing wrong with having some fun with friends but because there is a certain social structure revolving around post counts and the like a lot of people seem to use these topics as nothing more than boosters. And as I said it seems to be many of the same people who do it all the time. Also there seem to be a plethora of one word answers that have become discussions between two users... i always thought thats what the pms were for

So what? What more they can get from having more posts? And I find most of the supposed spammers you're talking about had posted many more meaningful posts than 90% users in this forum.

Ah well, it was just a thought. It is frowned upon pretty much everywhere else on the net, it's thought of as obnoxious and rude by quite a lot of people and I was just curious as to why it was allowed here.

I guess rules are different everywhere you go!

Of course. There're forums even only for spam, not for any particular topic. And I think we restrict spam in few topics won't affect any other user who doesn't like it.

BTW, just to clearify a thing. I don't think the Celine song games in Celine Section are just spam. It's a way to improve your memory of the songs you like. Only people who know those songs very well can play the games well.

It isn't those games I'm talking about. I agree that you restrict the spam in the Celine section (at least I assume you do cause I see no evidence of it there) it's more the ones that are on here. But hey, who am I to complain.... I'll just have to work around it

I like some of the games... because you get to know other members a little better (like the question game) but honestly some of them are getting a little old.

Those topics weren't created for members to increase post counts. It's for fun and games, get to know one another more, and to get people involved. I agree some of them are getting a bit old. I think without those topics, the off topic section will be much less active. Besides, you know what to expect when you read those topics :msn-tongue:

This has been going on way before we introduced the "Channel Addict" group so it's not like they're trying to increase their social status and it's the same members doing the "spamming" for the most part. Those that do it are already in the group so it's not like they do it just to get placed there and I'm not aware of any new member trying to "spam their way" up there

I think it's kind of naive to think that the only thing making people want to increase their post counts is status you created for them.... it's been going on on boards for years. While some of them may not have been I do believe that others were and that people are using them for this reason but hey, it ain't against the rules so there ain't nothing gonna stop them!

babymonkey, if you wanna create a Céline Dion forum on the net you can. And if you want that forum to not have spamming you can have no spamming. What do you care? I don't care. It doesn't matter to me if others post in the spamming thread. Like Koolan said, it's a way to meet other people and to have fun. I don't think that you should worry about this. Koolan and Bellamy will deal with it if things get way too out of hand.
