I think I'm beginning to tap into my passion for languages. I have been inspired by my Spanish teacher to pursue Linguistics either as a career or a hobby. I'm just doing some research right now on Armenian, even though it's my native language along with English, It's still interesting to actually read about the structure, verb conjugation, etc. I mean when you learn a language as a child, you don't usually learn it by all the aspects of the conjugations, etc, it's usually just associating the words with objects, forming sentences, etc. I mean I can explain some of the basic structure, but it's really interesting to really read about the structure, evolution, and origins of languages, especially Armenian since our language is one of the oldest in the world and it is unlike any other language in the world. Although it is said that Greek is the closest living language to Armenian.

Do any of you guys have a passion for languages?

It's funny because me and my 1st cousin are very alike, we are both clumsy, studious, and we both love to learn about different cultures and languages. We're both learning Persian too. I can never decide on a language to learn, I have a list haha!

French(Mainly due to Celine :) )

German

Italian

Sicilian

Swahili

Mandarin(maybe)

Spanish(Learning in school currently)

So if any of you guys have a passion for languages, let me know because I enjoy talking with people about languages just as much as talking about Celine :P

thats a long list you have there lol. i speak 3 languages. English, Malay and Chinese (Hokkien, Mandarin and Cantonese). im dying to learn French though, and of course, its because of Celine. but i've always thought French was such a beautiful language. German and Spanish is on my list too.

I definitely have a passion for languages! I wish it was possible for me to learn all the European languages. I'm currently learning French and love it. I started learning it because of Celine, but now they're many other reasons I love the language. I love reading about the French culture and reading stuff in French. It's a very beautiful language and I have really gotten to like the culture.

The next language I would like to learn is Spanish, because it's a common language and because it's similar to French. So, vis-versa I think French would be a good language for you. After French and Spanish, the next on my list would be Italian, German, and Afrikaans.

Yeah French is very beautiful, and I am learning Spanish at school and we recieve high school credit! In my school district, we have academy programs, I go to the GT (Gifted and Talented) Academy which is in Middle School and in high school they are academies focused on careers like Medical, Engineering, and one of our top schools, Clements High School, has a Global Languages Academy where you choose a Primary and Secondary language and do all kinds of fun and interesting things and obviously learn the language too. They are going to add Italian next year or later and I hope when I get to 9th grade which is not next school year but the next, they have Italian. If they do, I will choose either French or Italian as my Primary, and Either French, German, or Italian as my secondary. And a very sad fact I read (cannot remember the exact statistic) was that about 3,000 of today's languages will be dead in a century. :( This is why people need to learn languages, it's not THAT hard, I mean you don't have to go really in depth about a language if you are not a language enthusiast. There are easy and fun ways to learn a language! Is it just me, or do you guys get annoyed when people think English is all you have to know? I mean that is true to a certain extent but there are so many amazing languages out there that we take for granted, I mean the more languages you know, the better. Especially Spanish since it will help us all when we are older.

That program sounds very cool. I wish the school I went to had a program like that.

That is real unfortunate that so many languages will be dead in a century. My mother recently went to Denmark to visit family, she didn't know Danish and her family told her it's not worth taking the time to learn because so few people speak it. I wish more people were bilingual. It's an ability that I really admire. I would love be fluent in French and be a French/English translator.

I really regret not taking French or Spanish in high school. I was told that they wouldn't benefit me, so yes I don't like it when people feel that English is all they need to know. Granted, they can easily get through life only knowing English, but knowing another language or just having an interest in it really widens your horizons and makes you realize there is more out there than the USA. I have to admit that I use to believe that, but Celine sparked my interest in the French culture and I decided to learn French because I saw it as a fun puzzle. I only planned to learn French, but now I love picking up words from all languages and would love to learn as many languages that I can, as well as travel the world. I love it when I buy items and the instructions are in various languages. I'll read the whole instruction manual!!!

Yay, THIS is my topic!! I most definitely have a passion for languages! :D I'm a real "francophile", so French is my biggest passion and I can't even imagine a future that would not include French in some way (I think I've talked about my passion for French a lot of times here already, so I won't go deeper into details now ;) ).

But I love all languages just in general, and would love to learn so many of them! All if possible. :P But of course it's not.

Finnish is my mother tongue, but in addition I can speak English, French like mentioned, Swedish and some Spanish. Then, at some point during my life I have studied also German, Italian, Portuguese and Russian, but I can't say I speak those languages, because it's only the basics that I've learned, and with some of them it was years ago.. I would love to study each one of them again though! And I would still love to learn for example Dutch and Japanese at some point! :) I'm majoring in French in university, and hopefully I'll have English as my minor subject next year.

Different languages and cultures are just so cool! And it's so much fun learning them and knowing several languages! I think it's such a richness. But besides being interested in foreign languages, I do value my "own" language, Finnish too. Especially since not many people know it in the world!

Within the languages, I'm so interested in the grammar and words and phonetics and stuff, it's so fascinating how the human language works and how different languages were born. Great to see other people being so interested in this subject too. ;)

Why can't I search on google? :( The page freezes and eventually shuts down/restart whenever I hit "search" (but not for pictures for some reason). Tried both .com, .co.uk and .se. Been following every "this might solve your problem"-step but nothing! *sigh*

Yeah, I love it! Even though I have to reread sentences sometimes, we read The Adventure of The Speckled Band The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle in class and we are about to read one last short story. I think I have discovered my interest in Detective/Mystery stories.

 Yeah I think these are in chronological order. I got the Barnes and Noble version which is the complete series in I don't know how many volumes, but I think it's 4. Volume one contains (In order) A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Short Story Series, Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes Short Story Series, and The Hound of The Baskervilles.

:D "That is an -- interesting/fun/useful (?) language to learn"?? Am I anywhere near?

I have had this interest towards the Dutch language since I worked one summer as an au pair in France back in 2003. The mother of the family was Dutch (but she was married to a French man and was fluent in French), and sometimes I heard her talking to her parents on the phone in Dutch, and she also wanted to teach some Dutch words to her 2-year-old son, whose mother tongue was French though. And when her parents came for a visit for a couple of days, the three of them only spoke Dutch together, and I was frustrated cause I couldn't understand them! So it is since that that I have really wanted to learn Dutch some day. :)

I actually learned ONE word in Dutch during my stay, that was "a turtle". I don't know how it is written, but I still remember the pronounciation, if I wrote it just like I remember it was pronounced, it would be something like this: "schrildpad"

Who????

I am rooming with Eric (ellinger) and we are hanging out with Dani (lost84) and his bf. Had a great first day here. Spent time at the Venetian, walked around, went to the Wax museum and the little Scream area. Had the Buffet at the Mirage (it was listed as one of the tops ones) And then later went to CP for Cher! I loved the show. My only real complaint was there wasn't enough of Cher. Tons of time with video footages during her costume changes. Sang a lot of covers and when she sang her oldies she sang only about 2 mins of it! But I couldnt really complain cause from the area we were sitting in, in the 7th row she was sooo close. She looked at me a few times!! Eric and I sat together and Dani and his bf say in the 2nd mezz front row. Then we caught one of the fountain shows at the Bellagio. We were too tired to do much more so we all went back to our hotels.

Tomorrow we will do either Jersey Boys or Blue Man Group. So exciting!!
