Barna-Alper Offers Docs, Dramas at NATPE

TORONTO, January 12: Barna-Alper Releasing will offer several new original productions to buyers at NATPE next week, with an eclectic mix that includes Céline, Driving Dreams and The Bomber’s Dream.

Céline chronicles the stories of singer Céline Dion and her husband and manager Réne Angélil, following the duo’s journey as Dion grows to become one of the world’s top pop divas. The 90-minute TV movie is currently in production.

On the factual side, Driving Dreams explores society’s never-ending love affair with cars, for CBC and National Geographic Channels International, while The Bomber’s Dream tells the story of how and why air forces target civilians.

Other productions available from the Canadian distributor include Fatherland, Hidden Secrets of the Ocean and The Last Paradise.

I don't think so. I think it means you've achieved so much, this movie only adds one more thing to that huge and impressive list. And it's an honour. It means you did great.

OMG, she's one of the best actricess (is this spelled right ) in the buisness, if not THE greatest one EVER.

But that's just my opinion. So don't get all worked up over it now :thumbsup2:

I can't imagine Cate Blanchett playing Celine-----I mean, that would be FANTASTIC, but she's a highly respected actress, and I don't see her choosing that role at this point in her career.

Expanding Barna-Alper inks network deals for eight projects

TORONTO -- Toronto-based Barna-Alper Prods. has risen over the course of a quarter-century to become one of Canada's larger independent producers by playing it safe. But now the company is kicking off 2007 with a dramatic expansion strategy years in the making.
"A lot of people lamented when Alliance Atlantis withdrew from production and when (CanWest Global Communications' production arm) Fireworks was no more," says BAP helmer Laszlo Barna.

"The way we looked at it, there was opportunity, and it would not be truthful to say we're not capitalizing on that."

Last year, filmmaker Steven Silver and financial partner Neil Tabatznik bought a 50% stake in Barna-Alper for an undisclosed sum.

"It was a very robust company," Silver recalls, "and had a fantastic reputation as a boutique company on the one hand, but also commercially it was very successful."

That capital has allowed Barna-Alper ("Mega Builders," "Shania: A Life in Eight Albums,") to expand to the point that it has inked network deals for eight new series, miniseries and telepics.

The series include the dramatic skein "Da Kink in My Hair," with Global Television; "Who Do You Think You Are?," based on a U.K. format with pubcaster CBC; and with the women's pay TV channel Slice, BAP's first foray into lifestyle programming, "Party Mamas."

Also new in the offing: with the National Geographic in the U.S. and History Channel in Canada, four-parter "Underworld Gangs"; "Driving Dreams," a two-parter on consumers' love affair with the car, produced with National Geographic and the CBC; and "The Dark Years," a three-part animated documentary about the Great Depression, produced with History TV and the National Film Board.

Thrush Celine Dion is the subject of a 90-minute movie for CBC Television, and Dominic DaVinci ("DaVinci's Inquest," "DaVinci's City Hall") returns in a pic for CBC and Showcase.

BAP is increasingly targeting the U.S. and international market through its distrib division, Barna-Alper Releasing -- an offshoot set up after many of Canada's larger distribs closed shop earlier this decade.

"There are a lot of good reasons for working with Canadians," says Sydney Suissa, executive VP of content for National Geographic Channels Intl., U.S. broadcaster for "Driving Dreams" and "Underworld Gangs."

"They do good work by and large, and we're able to tap into good financing plans. Barna-Alper has a number of things that set them apart. They've been around for a long time, they have a great reputation, and they've done amazing things in documentary and also in drama."

Ehm... I like Cate Blanchett but I don't think she'd be great as Celine Dion. Besided, they look SO MUCH DIFFERENT. Yeah, they may put a few tons of make up but still...
