I guess I'm the only one that didn't struggle with her pronunciation? I understood her just fine. The song doesn't require any type of special vocals so I can see Celine trying to give it some personality otherwise the song would be worse imo.

To me the biggest detriment is the arrangement and production. It feels a bit half-assed, kind of basic.

I can see Celine totally taking on this song because she appreciates Diane and solely for the message in the lyrics. I like that Diane gave her a song that isn't a love song and wanted to highlight another side of Celine because the easiest thing to do would be to give THE Celine Dion one of the softer and romantic songs but she didn't. So, I like that but it did need more work imo. It was one of the two weakest songs in the album unfortunately.

Would be tiring if we had any same old big ballads anymore… I don’t think she’s had a single beautiful grand ballad that’s classic Celine since “I surrender” in my opinion! At least not one that every part is there….
1.Crysal clear vocals
2. Good mixing/reverb production
3. Great producers
4. Proper song with all the aspects of the chorus, verses , bridge, climax and endings
5 Great lyrics and backing vocals

I’d probably say Breakaway can be identified with those requirements

okay, maybe it's cause I've listened to it several times but it's grown on me a little. It's still one of the weakest songs in the album but not in the bottom two.
If it came up on a playlist I wouldn't skip it but I'm not gonna go out of my way to listen to it.

Is this called soul these days? :giggle:

Read the lyrics, the message is cool.
Production sounds soooo cheap.
And her pronunciation, why does she thinks she sounds great doing it like that?

Part where Diane mentions Celine

English Translation:

Celine Dion sings the song "Superwoman" on her album. Do you just call them up and ask "Celine, what does it look like?"

Yes, in principle, that's exactly how it works. Picking the singers for these songs is kind of like casting a movie. For Celine, I've written a lot of songs over the years. People know her as a great ballad singer. But I always hear this Aretha Franklin element in Celine's voice. So I offered her this soul song and I think she does a great job. That's exactly the Celine I love and wanted to bring out.

I don't know about you, but after having listended to it twice, i don't need to hear it again for like in a year now :D She sounds like she is eathing something and chewing in her mouth while singing. Just terrible and disappointing. The sad thing is that the people around her keep telling her that it's her new "essence" and that she sounds "soulful"...

I think this song is alright and Diane probably had a good concept, I don’t blame her for the end result.

Half of the problem is Céline’s delivery. I find it very frustrating that she keeps “experimenting” with her voice in such unappealing ways and wasting precious opportunities such as this one. Why can’t she just stick to the winning formula developed for her by René and the other old men in suits decades ago? She can experiment all she wants behind closed doors but when she steps out in public, she’s Céline Dion the artist, the public figure, the Céline Dion with an image she built over the years, the Céline Dion that fans know and love. Many fans grew up with her in the 90s and the 2000s. Céline said it herself when explaining her decision to return to long brown hair in 2004: fans love her because she is the constant in their lives, the thing that through it all never changes. Why can’t she stick to that mindset? She’s not going to gain a new generation of fans by performing songs the way she did “Superwoman”. If anything, she risks alienating the fans she already has. I get that it’s her life and she can do whatever she wants. She doesn’t have to please anyone but this is the career that she built, her image. That is what people fell in love with and crave to this day. I have the right to feel frustrated, sometimes even disappointed or worried because I love Céline Dion the person and her career matters to me simply because I want what’s best for her. I believe René and Aldo would have agreed.

The other half of the ‘blame’ (for those of us who dislike the end product) must be attributed to the guys who did the production. Just why did they need to make it sound so dry and airy and scratchy? And why does it only seem to happen to Céline? I first noticed it in 2018 with this recording of “I’m Alive”:

The fact that the producers keep changing but the sound is the same makes me wonder whether Céline might be behind this and choosing the mics and the effects they put on her voice. If so, that’s an even bigger problem.

What I personally hope for right now is that this song remains in obscurity so that the masses never get the chance to hear Céline this way as she truly is so much better. It’s a shame really as this could have been a chance for her to shine. Instead, it’s another missed opportunity. I also hope that this was indeed recorded some time ago and that she has come to her senses since, maybe even got a new manager as some on here were suggesting.

Sorry for the rant and I apologize if I seem too agressive. It’s really not that big of a deal, just very frustrating.
The best is yet to come...

This. This is what drives me a little nuts. Why does she feel she needs to emulate this "style" of singing?

Maybe because this is just how Celine's voice sounds...??

And that video of I'm Alive is in very bad quality, not even panned equally.

I didn't read the previous pages about this song but I can imagine we mostly agree on saying that this is not a supersong  It's a regular one.

Her pronunciation is atrocious. Some words are sounding like different ones. Lace = less, beast = best

It sounds to me like she does not make any effort recording songs, it sounds like a raw one-take live version. I expect more from her when it comes to studio recordings. Maybe people around her don't dare asking her to make another take or something, but it really feels more of a demo than a premium studio recording track.

I'm still enjoying the song though, I think mainly because it's new, but it definitely won't make its way to my top Celine songs.

After listening a couple more times I think it’s not that bad. She’s just obsessed with this type of sound now I guess.

One little bit that irks me is the beginning when she sings “less” as “lace” and then “best” as “baste” but otherwise it’s ok.
I have had the time of my life following this woman!  Much love.

The comments on a snippet video were very impressed and in love with the snippet. Maybe we Celine fans just are too critical :P

What is the consensus? Do people think the song would be better with better vocal delivery? Or is the song itself just lacking? Or neither?

The thing is...who is she emulating? Who is singing like this nowadays?

We can half jokingly say that perhaps the Loved Me Back To Life album was the worst thing to happen to her career because that project convinced her to sing this way.

Why anyone would ever want to give up perfect and precise vocals is beyond me. If you got them, flaunt them. I think production is also to blame....don't auto-tune or edit Celine's voice.

Was I the only one who liked this song?
I didn't think she was so different from what she's been doing and remember that Celine is not the one who produces the music, this "new way of singing" is part of this new generation of music.

Finally bought the song and listened to it this morning. I don’t hate it. It’s total “album filler” that I still suspect was for Courage and didn’t get chosen.

If this was recorded a while ago, it could’ve been during her ear issue of 2018. Or it could just be the “sound” they were going for with Courage as it sounds so similar to other tracks.

I suspect it’ll grow on me over time. If she does sing it live in Vegas or on tour, it may help as it won’t have all the production problems.

Not nearly as bad as The Show Must Go On but No No No!
The song could be half decent but what are they doing, what is she doing?! Any more poor quality releases like this with her sounding like something stuck in her throat will not only damage her career but her legacy as well. Sorry for nagging but this is so far from what I adore with Celine, it just hurts

From 5:20 to 5:50 in this video Céline talks about exactly this sound that we can hear on “Superwoman” and confirms that she does voluntarily sing with a closed throat and in a breathy way. Also, she says they play with technology and that it’s fun and safe because it doesn’t have to be released if they don’t like it. The question is: who in their right mind likes it?!

Watching this video also reminded me just how much healthier and more beautiful her speaking voice sounds in recent videos (2021) compared to 2019, so there is hope that she may start using her beautiful tone again when singing too.

I like it a lot. I keep singing "I'm only human.." I agree with other people that she's definitely picked up some vocal things from Sia. However, this isn't new - there are plenty of her songs from the 90s I didn't understand some pronunciations the first time. Not new, just different than it was.

Yes, I wish Gatica had been part of this project, and I agree with others that the production has its flaws. At the end of the day, I think its really fun.

This is the mistake. Maybe in her "original" style would be another thing, but in this song, she's singing like a cartoon of herself. The song is good, but don't fill me entirely.

After 50 listens lol, it’s growing on me, remember this song is about the message and I think most people in life who are heavily depended on by family, friends or in their job can really identify with the words of this song :)
