Eurovision 1988 rehearsal video. Her voice was in top shape .  The other singers had no chance :giggle:.

Well they actually had a pretty good chance considering only one point difference Posted Image

Still this makes it one of the best moments in Eurovision history Posted Image

That voting sequence was one of the best, most tense iterations in all of Eurovision!  The fact that it literally came down to the last vote cast, and was all hanging on just one point's difference - you can hear the escalating gasps as each of Yugoslavia's votes is cast and still nothing for the UK, right up to "And finally, France" and the eruption of excitement.  It was nail-biting to watch!

Friday La note parfaite : Céline Dion à l'Eurovision aired on rtbr Oauvio. A special reliving her 88 Eurovision win.  They interviewed the composer and also Scott Fitzgerald. Believe a few new behind scenes shots as well but nothing ground breaking.

Here is link to original video:

Here is link to video with English Subtitles. The subtitles done with online software so can’t guarantee total accuracy but believe pretty close. If anyone finds any errors let me know and I will correct them.

Since today marks the 35th anniversary of Eurovision 1988, it also marks the 35th anniversary of the first time I saw Céline live, at the dress rehearsal that afternoon!  And so my fandom began... :D

WOW, you were so lucky!

Nemo is the first Switzerland winner since Celine, in 1988: it would be absolutely tremendous if she was present next year but I somehow don’t think she will be. I always got the impression she feels it’s beneath her, or that she doesn’t want to be associated with the contest for some other reason.

Céline Dion, music's greatest ever singer, the biggest-selling Canadian artist of all-time and most successful female live act ever - what's not to love?

Maybe/hopefully she signed a contract in 1988 obliging her to do so!!! Hahaha

But I do wonder if she will react to her successor.

Would be epic if she was there next year… the timing and meaning would be all so perfect.

For a second I thought ABBA would show up tonight, but they are only guaranteed in hologram form these days!

Especially since Nemo made a great tribute to her: he recorded a symphonic version of the winning song dressed in Céline's 1988 outfit, and the video ends with "thank you for everything, Céline Dion" (it's on Vevo, ).

Eurovision victories have not always been deserved, but this time I am very happy; Nemo is a fantastic artist.

I have the exact same thoughts as you guys.

I thought it would be incredible to see Celine get back to Eurovision next year. But I as well feel she has dissosiated from the contest.

The ESC has proven to be corrupt.
  • They banned Russia after they invaded Ukraine, but allowed Israel to participate despite attacking Palestine.
  • They disqualified the Netherlands on the grounds of harrassment, but allowed Israel to participate despite committing genocide.
  • They chose neutrality in times of conflict. Neutrality is a political stance though. When there are victims, neutrality always works against them.
  • They claim that the public vote is important but truth is that the juries decide the results. Switzerland was only 5th in the public vote, yet it won the competition because the juries gave it an unbeatable lead. Same thing happened last year with Sweden.
  • Considering the wide reach and polularity of the competition, all of the above entail the risk of normalising bias and corruption.
These are my opinions, of course. And whilst I'd love to see Celine make such a big public appearance, I also think it is good to distance herself from what the ESC has become.

Why do people keep comparing our situation to Israel Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

Russia attacked us unprovoked. There hadn't been an attack on Russia from Ukraine.

A terrorist group attacked Israel, not the country of Palestine which is being obliterated.

Actually, Hamas has been governing the Gaza Strip since 2007.
So they do represent the population of the Gaza Strip (which is where most of the military attacks are taking place). Sadly, it also appears that support for Hamas within the Palestine territories has gone up since the October attacks.

I do not condone the way the Israeli government is handling this at all. And as heinous as the October attacks were, I feel they were a direct result of Israeli (and moreso Western!) policies of the last few decades.

This situation is much too complex for people to hold black/white views imo.

I don’t think this is a conversation for the forum. Let’s keep war and politics out of this safe space. We have enough of that day to day everywhere else.  😊

She was there performing Where Does My Heart Beat Now the very next year!  And am I making things up, or did she send an intro hello for 2020 or something like that?  (It's all hazy to me...)

I doubt she'll ever show up in person for a future contest, but I also don't feel like she's rejected the contest any more than her original Québec albums.  Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi has been included on various compilations (including On Ne Change Pas, her most official/definitive French language compilation), and she's never seemed to shy away from her victory.  It's just that it's more than thirty years ago, and while huge for her at the time, it's not really that important to her career anymore, so why would she go out of her way to bring it up?

We are comparing the way EBU responded to countries responsible for very specific attrocities. This is not a debate between Ukraine and Palestine in terms of their innocence.

Furthermore, examining the situation in Palestine in its own right, to argue provocation you would need the response to be in proportion to the attack. We could therefore argue provocation only if Isreal had responded to Palestine with a single terrorist attack, similar to the one they suffered. But this is not the case. They went way too far.

She sang WDMHBN in the Eurovision show in 1989 and sent a message in 1997. I remember the last time she sang NPPSM in a show on German TV in 2005/2006.

I think during a recent year, she sent a message to the contestant of France.

That was my first thought when Switzerland won this year, Céline should really be involved next year. It would be beyond epic.

Funny how fast the rumors start, too. My mom asked me yesterday about Céline"s participation in ESC 2025. It's already being spread by gossip magazines apparently.

Perfect timing to promote a new French album/single then.
