I'm surprised Aldo didn't try to postpone this honnor to next year... It would have been great promo for her new English album (if she'd perform a new single.) But I'm not complaining!!

Seriously though, what songs other then MHWGO or BYLM or LCMM would she possibly do, ABM or how about DOL? Honestly I'd be more disappointed with any of those.  LMBLT (the entire album) is the latest release and that tanked in the States, so she wouldn't be doing anything in the last decade of hers anyway. I think she is just stuck, so why not do something she likes? After all, she said Freddie Mercury was, "Fearless!"

I suppose they'll give her another award next year!!!! She may also be eligible next year for Awards due to her tours two albums and possible singles. I wouldn't be surprised if she gets the Millennium Award next year or another huge award show honours her such as the Grammys. The representatives voiced disappointment in not getting her to tribute Paris last year (American Music Awards beat them to it) Maybe the World Music Awards.

I think it's too soon for her. She's  still in grieving. It takes time. And to be singing Show Must Go On is a slap in the face to the grieving process. This is probably Aldo's idea. It seems forced and premature. Celine take your time. We'll be waiting for you no matter what.

Your post seems that you feel Celine can't make her own decisions. The arrangement for this song was mostly her idea. I'm sure that if CELINE DION did not want to sing this song in particular, she wouldn't be doing it.

Agreed. Plus she's already been back to her show in Las Vegas for several months performing so she'll be ready.  As you say, if she didn't want to do it she simply wouldn't be doing it.

Most people, if not everyone, here agree that it would preferrable if Celine performed one of her own songs however this is the decision and it's time to accept it rather than keep going on about it. Embrace the fact that she's been chosen to receive this award, embrace the fact that she's chosen to accept it and embrace the fact that she'll be front and centre at one of the most important award shows of the year.  Plus every performance of "The Show Must Go On" she's ever given has been absolutely exceptional so be safe in the knowledge that this performance will blow the world away too. Look forward to it!

This song speaks for itself. It means to move on and turn the page, the lyrics would totally make sense in this time. She wants to come back and she's ready, "the show must go on", right? So here's Céline's own "the show must go on": that's her song "A New Day Has Come"

Besides, this song has not been performed to death so it is very fresh and not worn out,  it is one of her most recent worldwide success (sadly, for a song that has 14 years already) and above all, it is one of her own songs.

I wholeheartedly agree with the fact that people got used to see her performing in all this BIG awards just performing songs that are not of hers. Oscars. Grammys, Billboards... When was the last time she performed one of her own songs?

It's useless to say because apparently it is her choice, but it's so sad she never finds comfort and confidence in one of her songs to perform in these big events, despite having one of the huggest music catalogue in the industry. And yet she has to resort to a cover. (Sighs )

I personally think Celine has made this song her own over the years.... It no longer sounds like a cover as it did back in 2007 when she first performed it... She performes it in her style and her way.  The new version is her idea with the orchestra .... She has defiantly put her own stamp on it!

We cannot deny that this song has been with her for quite some time now.... It must mean a lot to her...

I think it might also be a matter of perception... Celine is not a songwriter (not an active one at least) so she probably feels her songs do not really belong to her but to the songwriters. In her mind, a singer is there to deliver songs no matter where they come from. So singing an original song must be feeling the same to her as singing a cover.

And based on all of this, I think her only criterion is her current emotional connection.

The first thing that came to my mind when TSMGO was announced is that it was a great option. It meant to me that Celine wants to send a message to the world.

Then I doubted myself because it is a cover. So I quickly went through her discography in my mind to find a better song. And I couldn't.

ANDHC was the only one that came close. But I rejected it because to start a new day means you put an end. And Celine is not ready to leave anything behind. She is not going through the phase of making a new beginning, she is still grieving. There is no positive change in her life. Therefore, what she needs to tell to the world is that despite her personal struggle she will go on as a singer/performer. As a result, she picked TSMGO because it reflects her proffesional life more than ANDHC which reflects her personal life.

But her professional life is closely linked to her personal life, right? She has always stated that, there are not 2 Céline's, one the singer on stage and then another different person, the mother, the wife etc. It's the same Céline.

What I mean is that performing one of her songs would have been a perfect opportunity to give more exposure to her own credit as a singer who has achieved great success creating a solid repertoire of hits, which not only consists of covers, but also original  and good  songs. Picking once again a song that is not hers and that has been performed to death in many different contexts (not only in public but also in the private moments of countless people), helps very little to eliminate this image of Céline as the "queen of covers".

The fact is that the contribution of Céline to the music industry in terms of creativity and originality keeps diminishing in the last decade. If we count appart the massive success she has achieved in LV, giving near 1,000 concerts from 2003 to 2016, there's little to remember of her music career in all these years.

I don't think it's a matter of believing equally in both your original songs and songs written for others. At this point, it's a matter of self-confidence and a little love for what you have been offered in your career. Picking a Céline song for this "ICON" award would also mean respect and appreciation for all the writers and producers that have once (and some in several occassions) believed in her and sent her a song that was written specifically for her

Not that "The Show Must Go On" isn't suitable for this specific time in her personal and professional life, but... come on, she could do much more than picking another cover for the umpteenth time.

Btw, "Thankful" would have also been a striking performace, with more than suitable lyrics. With a decent gospel choir behind

What I am saying is that she needs to make a statement about her career not about her personal life. And in my previous post I explained why I feel ANDHC is not a suitable song to sing. Same way Thankful is not a good choice for the simple fact that she is not feeling thankful at the moment. Nobody does that during a grieving period. There are things in her life to be thankful for such as her kids and all the opportunities she was given but this is not her core feeling right now.

I agree with everything you say about Celine doing covers and I hope we mostly see original songs from now on, starting with her Las Vegas show. Timster made a similar comment the other day that said it all. And many fans agreed. So I guess there is consesus on that.

I usually disagree with your reasoning though. For example, there is no need to show respect to the songwriters who gave her songs by singing them live. She already recorded and included them in her albums. They also got paid for it. And then added the collaboration to their bios. That is more than enough for EVERY songwriter out there.

Ermmm ... Sorry but you don't know what's she thinking these days, you don't know nor me what's going on inside her head or how she's feeling today. We have no idea if she wants to be grieving still or on the contrary wants to move on and start another chapter in her life. How do you know she's not feeling thankful at the moment? How do you know she wants to chose a song in liaison with a grieving feeling? That's mere conjecture. Maybe she wants to grieve, or maybe she's eager to show the world that she's okay and that she wants to smile again and as soon as possible, for her and for her children.

We won't know until she speaks in the upcoming interviews. So all what you said is just hypothetical. But we DO know she is -and has always been- thankful to her public. She thanked many times the public and the fans during and after René's funerals and in her "Celebration of Life" speech. So to me, Thankful would be still a very suitable song to come back and perform in this awards.

I know she chose TSMGO instead of ANDHC or Thankful. This speaks volumes about how she is feeling.

What I said is hypothetical indeed but then again what is this discussion all about? You saying what Celine SHOULD/COULD have done.

You say you don't know what she's feeling. Then why do you insist on her singing an original song? Accept her choice which is based on whatever SHE knows she is feeling.

I think Celine considers TSMGO one of her songs at this point. It obviously speaks to her emotionally, and I think is the perfect song for this moment in her life. It's an emotional, dramatic song -- exactly what she is known for -- and her recent performances of it have been highlights of her show.

I think it's a perfect choice. Just my opinion.

She's in a place where she has nothing to promote. Picking a random b-side or album track that only fans would know and the majority of people watching wouldn't have a connection to would be silly. Also, performing something she's never performed live or hasn't performed in years, she may not feel that strong of a connection to right now either. Celine has always been good at relating to people. She wants to relate right now through her sorrow AND her strength. Performing "The Show Must Go On" is the perfect way to do so. She feels something for this song, and a lot of people know it, and also will feel a connection to it. It's perfect.

About the covers at awards shows...these are usually songs that are chosen by the producers of the show. The in memoriam segments are already set up. Songs like "Smile" were already put in place. They just had to find the singer. Maybe with the exception of "Hymne a L'amour" I'm not sure if that was Celine's choice or not. This award is for Celine, and about Celine. She can sing whatever the heck she wants.
