junglesgal Posted September 27, 2008 at 08:58 AM Posted September 27, 2008 at 08:58 AM Do you know if Celine has perfect pitch? According to this site: http://www.perfectpitchpeople.com/dion.htm she has it.But it also says Mariah Carey has perfect pitch and although she probably has incredible hearing, I've seen evidence in her concerts that she doesn't.Just curious. disadiva Posted September 27, 2008 at 10:53 AM Posted September 27, 2008 at 10:53 AM Celine has Perfect pitch according to David Foster and other´s she has worked with..She still has it because she takes care of herself so well..Mariah and Whitney used to have it but i can´t say they have it anymore but Mariah still sounds good but you can hear her vocals is hoarsh at times...without great pitch... sadly it´s the truth. Mariah performed in Hong Kong on september 25th and i have to say she was great better than she sounded in her aweful TEOM Era. Celine always sounds GREAT.... Quote http://i46.tinypic.com/2nvtcpl.jpg
daSinga Posted September 27, 2008 at 12:19 PM Posted September 27, 2008 at 12:19 PM Perfect pitch doesn't mean that their voice always hits the note perfectly. Perfect pitch means that if you asked Celine to sing a note (for example High C), she would know which note to sing without finding it first on a piano or keyboard. Or, if she had her back to a piano and someone played a random note, she would know which note it was. So, if Whitney and Mariah HAD perfect pitch, unless they've forgotten their musical training they would still have perfect pitch. It still doesn't mean they can always hit the notes correctly (especially live). It's more training your ear to recognize which note a tone is that you hear. ~~Bren 1 Quote www.myspace.com/brendahebertdaSinga.crazyguyonabike.comhttp://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=224a385...81da97097d23741 My Celine Karaoke files on Mediafirehttp://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=224a385...18150a18fd00bfb My mediafire folder with recordings of me singing!
Attendais Posted September 27, 2008 at 12:54 PM Posted September 27, 2008 at 12:54 PM Well, I think that Céline HAD a perfect pitch... her voice changed... consequently I can't say that it's better now It seems to be tired and old... no comparison with, for example, "The First Time Ever I saw Your Face" Quote http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/Takin_chances/jetaimeencoresing.jpg "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes"
Céline's Blues Posted September 27, 2008 at 01:01 PM Posted September 27, 2008 at 01:01 PM (edited) One thing is for sure: Judging from her official live recordings one can barely say she has any kind of pitch at all. Cesdra Posted September 27, 2008 at 02:28 PM Posted September 27, 2008 at 02:28 PM perfect pitch has nothing to do with her voice it has something to do with her hearing. it was explained quite well already. it means coming into a room and being able to say if the instruments are tuned perfectly, if the piano is too low or the strings need to be retuned. I have never heard Céline or anyone else say that she has perfect pitch. I don't think she does. Quote
destin139 Posted September 27, 2008 at 02:44 PM Posted September 27, 2008 at 02:44 PM Bren explained it really well - perfect pitch is about training your ear, not your voice. If you have perfect pitch you cant just "lose" it by not training your ear or your voice - its a gift that you have! (and one that i would love to have!!) Celine hits nearly every note perfectly in her concerts because she still trains her voice, unlike Whitney ofr example, not because she has perfect pitch!! Lou555 Posted September 27, 2008 at 06:07 PM Posted September 27, 2008 at 06:07 PM If it is as explained previously I think Céline has a perfect pitch and still has it. If you ask Céline to do a particular note, she does it no problem. On the other hand I heard David Foster saying that he used to have it too but that it is something you can lose with time because he said he doesn't have it anymore. Quote

And for somebody who is in the music business, constantly listening to music, it's impossible to lose it except if he has some sickness or physical distortion in his ears. But that's not likely. I can't say because I don't really know much about this but I can assure you that David was quite serious about this. It was on ET(Canada) a couple of weeks ago so I remember it very well. He said he was shocked himself about it because he didn't think he could ever ose it but that for him it happened in recent years. He was very surprised because, like you, he didn't think he could ever lose that. Quote
Krys Posted September 28, 2008 at 04:26 AM Posted September 28, 2008 at 04:26 AM if Celine has perfect pitch, it would have been stated in her biographies...as far as I know, only Therese Dion has perfect pitch in the family. and for those who STILL doesnt know what "perfect pitch" is, read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absolute_pitch like some others have stated above, it isnt about voice Quote
junglesgal Posted September 28, 2008 at 05:12 AM Author Posted September 28, 2008 at 05:12 AM (edited) You are right, if she had it, she would have mentioned it in her autobiography for sure. If someone has perfect pitch, they let the world know about it. (Even if they don't have it )But if she doesn't have it, it doesn't make Celine any less of an amazing singer. I just thought she might have it because I read somewhere that 87% of top concert performers have it. And Celine is definitely of them And I thought she might have absolute pitch because I read or heard somewhere that she just has to listen to a song once and then she can sing and record it in the studio without any practice or preparation. And people with perfect pitch are known to have incredible musical memories. E.g. one of my friends, who has perfect pitch, remembers hundreds of phone numbers because she recalls the "tune" the telephone buttons make when she dials them. Wow! if Celine has perfect pitch, it would have been stated in her biographies... Edited September 28, 2008 at 05:22 AM by junglesgal Quote
Cesdra Posted September 28, 2008 at 08:50 AM Posted September 28, 2008 at 08:50 AM having perfect pitch or not is a genetic condition. Of course you need to train your ear to know which note has which name (C, A , Bflat etc.) since that is an artifical system. Still you can't lose it unless you suffer damage to your ear or to your brain. In fact, there are people who suffer from brain damage after an accident but are still musically very gifted and still have perfect pitch. It's a very complicated system and not something that you attain by training or lose by lack of it. Quote

chatwuann Posted September 29, 2008 at 06:25 PM Posted September 29, 2008 at 06:25 PM I don't have musical training and I don't know how good my ear is for music, so I wouldn't know if Celine has perfect pitch or not. I love Celine's voice and I love Celine so perfect pitch isn't important to me. She has a power voice which is something I don't have and although I can carry a tune I don't have the power and do not perform. I still sing along to music because I enjoy singing. calmar Posted October 1, 2008 at 11:16 PM Posted October 1, 2008 at 11:16 PM Celine does NOT have perfect pitch. Perfect pitch isn't something you can learn, you are born with it. And when you have it, you don't "lose" it with time. There are very FEW people who's got it. Perfect pitch doesn't mean you can sing "in tune", it means you can recognize any tone, like if you hear a sound or a note, you can say if it's a C, a B flat, etc... without any reference. You can also sing any note without any reference, but we can often see that Celine needs a first note or a reference note to start songs like TPOL, BYLM, etc... Songs that start with the voice alone. Of course nowadays, you don't hear that reference note when she sings live, because she hears it in her in-ears monitors. And a singer who has perfect pitch CAN'T sing transposed songs, like Celine do really often. They can't do so because the original pitch of the song is in their memory, and they have trouble to sing it even an half tone lower or higher... it's hard to explain...But Celine definitely doesn't have perfect pitch. I just wanted to see what calmar would answer because his opinion about Celine's pitch doesn't seem reliable IMHO. Why so ? Have you studied music for years ? I have. I'm a professional musician, I work with Le Cirque Du Soleil, I've studied sound technique for 5 years and I own a recording studio, so I think I have a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about. It looks like most people here don't even know what perfect pitch is. It has NOTHING to do with the voice itself. I can affirm Celine doesn't have perfect pitch, there are a lot of clues in her live performances (which I mentionned earlier) that make it obvious she doesn't have it. Mariah and Whitney don't have perfect pitch either. But that doesn't mean they can't sing "in tune". Quote
