People can apply to be a "permanent resident" after 10 years you can apply for citizenship easily. My mom so far hasn't applied mostly because now becoming a citizen cost over $300 just to fill out the application. :/
Really? Wow, maybe you're right because there are so many ppl having kids now a days...$300? Kind of pricey for an application. Well good luck! I hope your mom will get the finances for that soon
Thanks! It's crazy how much prices have increased, I wouldn't be surprised if it's even more. So many new laws are coming into effect, they do anything to take your money. A replacement for a stolen permanent resident CARD cost over $120 dollars about five years ago.
lol at this topic totally going semi off-topic

This is not true anymore, it was back in the 50-60s, maybe 70s. It changed as they didnt want people coming to the US, giving birth and staying because of their child. I have one or two friends who were born to Swedish and English citizens in the US, they aren't entitled to American citizenships. Only if you are born to American citizens are you entitled to citizenship. I was born in an American family in Europe, but still it took me 2 or so years to get my citizenship from when I applied (bureaucracy) to get my citizenship, even though I was entitled to it from birth. Rene Charles would probably have to apply for American citizenship like all others.

Shania's son was born in Switzerland but he has British-Canadian citizenship. Usually you, or your parents have to decide which citizenship you have. Germany only allows dual-citizenship in very special cases. The law has just been changed here. If you are born in Germany you are not necessarly a German citizen. If your parents aren't German citizens, they have to decide if they want you to be German or not. You can't have both.

It doesn't matter if Céline has only the canadian citizenship or also the U.S citizenship.
Honestly I don't think Céline WOULD WANT a U.S. citizenship.. She's so proud to be a canadian..
She probably has a 'green card'.

' When I'm feeling down
The mention of your name
It lifts my spirit up.
It makes me carry on,
When I don't have the strength
Your faith can heal me.
Like the sun that shines
You gave me light to see.'

I don't think it would be terrible for her to become a U.S citizen but in some ways I'm glad she hasn't.
I know she is incredibly proud to be from Quebec and the people from Quebec are proud of her. What ever she decides she'll always be a Canadian first and everything else second.....

RC is American by birth since he was born in Florida, USA. He would have been given an Florida State Birth Certificate and would have been able to get his American Social Security Number at the same time, legalizing his existence in the US.
Both Celine and Rene could have retained their Canadian citizenship and applied for either work visas here in the states, or, pushing it, applied for dual citizenship. Celine Dion would never be able to work here in the states, claim American federal taxes, pay her employees in American dollars, legally own homes in her own name, possible have a driver's license in the state she resides here in America [here in the USA driver's licenses are issued by state government, not federal] or be able to stay here for as long as she did while the Vegas show was running. Now a lot of those things are more geared towards business, and I think it's safe to assume it all goes through whatever business, LLC or DBA they're using here in the states for their business, all for financial reasons.
Now all the personal stuff like Celine paying federal taxes on her income, having a driver's license or being able to call the USA home for the entire run of AND... would require at least a US Work Visa, which typically needs to be sponsored by an American-based company [maybe Sony or Caesars'] and has an exprition date, upon which the Visa would need to be re-applied for and approved by the government.
The day that Celine Dion gives up her Canadian citizenship for any reason, she'd be all over the news, tv, magazines in Canada and the US and have tomatoes thrown at her in Canada when she returned. She's made such a huge deal out of Canada being her first audience, her first fans, buying her first records, specifically the Quebecois, that she could never give up her birth-rites as a citizen of Quebec/Canada, especially to choose citizenship of the USA.

Celine works so much here it would be much, much easier for her to have dual citizenship in both America and Canada. And, applying for citizenship for the sake of voting isn't a bad idea. Heidi Klum became a citizen just this past year for the sole purpose of voting in the last election. I think it's honorable to care enough about a country to want to have a say in its future.

People can become citizens of the United States after five consecutive years of residence, not ten. Also, the US recognizes dual citizenship with most other countries, including Canada. It take several months to over a year for one to become a citizen of any country, never mind the US. I'm eligible for Italian citizenship, but am just procrastinating.

You know, I always forget that! It must be a bit awkward for Celine and Rene with that, but at least he's entitled to dual-citizenship. I agree, though. If she hasn't applied for US citizenship yet, then I doubt she ever will.

I have often wondered if RC, Nelson and Eddy are Canadian, because RC seems to have very strong pride for his French Canadian roots. His friend's even seem to treat him like he's Canadian. The way RC and John converse back and forth with each other. When RC gave John the Montreal Canadians hat last summer, I think John even referred to RC as Canadian in one of there Live video chats? It comes across as though he's Canadian in my eyes anyways.
I know that RC would obviously have a connection to Canada, because of both his parents being from Canada, but I think it goes deeper then that. I just get this feeling from him, that he strongly considers himself to be Canadian as well.
