When the lighting engineer Yves Aucoin was grafted with the team of Celine Dion in 1989, it counted a dozen members, including the musicians. Today, 75 to 90 people are round Taking Chances, which about fifteen at most are not of Quebec.
When an artist makes deal with a large size of the setting in scene of spectacle like Franco Dragone (A New Day) or Jamie King (the current round), usually, this one is brought with its whole team.
With Celine Dion, the things are done differently. "Rene (Angélil) it is gambler, but it has need to have couple of charts in its sleeve, of world with which it can to speak and which will give him the hour right if there are problems, explains Yves Aucoin who is also a scenographer of the team. I think that Rene called to the director: "You have white chart, but I have my sonorisator, my musicians, my lighting engineer. That would be liked that it goes with them... ".
Angélil corrects: "I do not say to him only that I would like that, it is obliged. I say to him who am in our team. If Celine is returned where it is, it is thanks to them. Jamy is enough intelligent to include/understand it."
Jamie King is the choreographer-originator-setter in scene which after having danced for Michael Jackson made her classes while assembling spectacles in the boxes of Prince. Since, even if it is not 40 years old, it became a reference.
It assembled the last three spectacles of Madonna, worked with Ricky Martin and Christina Aguilera, it is him which is behind the last spectacle of Spice Girls, it launched ideas in Kanye West for its new round and it currently prepares the next spectacle of Lavigne April. When I spoke to him, it was of passage in Montreal for a meeting with the Circus of the Sun and it returned very right from London where it had worked with the next clip of Madonna with Justin Timberlake.
A true director
At the time of the last round of Celine Dion, in 1998 - an eternity in the universe of the spectacle of arena - there was no director or rather Rene Angélil was it a little by defect insofar as the final decisions belonged to him. "Today still, it is me which have the last word", he says me. But the need for a true director was essential on the end of last summer whereas the preparation of the spectacle Taking Chances was already advanced.
The mixing of ideas started there are one year and half with the hard core of the team, Aucoin, the sonorisator Denis Savage and the leader Mégo. "In our meetings, Céline said all the time that it missed something, that it was necessary that that moves, that that is dynamic, tells Angélil. She launched an idea and the guy answered him that that was not made, that that would be difficult. One evening, after a meeting, I saw that it anxious, was disappointed. I said to him that I would find a director to him."
Angélil requires then of an American agent which is the three best current directors. Then it sends the hard core of its team to meet them. The first their fact good impression, but when they see King the same day, their enthusiasm goes up of a notch.
"It is rare that a lighting engineer interviews a director, tells me Aucoin. It would have been hated and Celine would have liked it, that would have been perfect. But as soon as I saw it in the restaurant, I said myself: it is him! That felt."
Celine Dion and Rene Angélil insist: it was necessary absolutely that King is accepted by Aucoin, Savage and Mégo. As they had fallen under its charm, King met Céline the evening-even in her cabin. "Celine said all to him that it saw, a show which punche, faster songs, remembers Angélil. Jamy had to launch 50 ideas in two hours, it is a machine. It said something, it left on this idea, Céline flippait. Before it does not leave, I said to him in front of everyone that one would be honoured to work with him."
"It listened to all that one said, Aucoin remembers. Then it arrived with a proposal for a show in which all was in place, it had put at it its businesses, its vidéos, its choreographies, but nobody could say that it was not Céline."
"I discovered at the time of my first meetings with Céline that there is full with things which people do not know of her, said Jamie King. I want to show who it am really. People perceive it like a singer of ballades, but it is so much more than that. It is a young woman who likes to have fun, to move, talk cock, rocker, to be funky like James Brown, all that will be in the show. Rare are the artists who can make rock'n'roll, the pop one, soul and yodeler moreover. There will be no flying piano, one already saw that. The theatrical side will pass by the design of the scene, the screens which go up and go down, the performance. I wanted that that is groundé a little more and organic, like the east Céline."
In fact King had to assemble three spectacles, two with the central scene, the mobile screens and the elevators: the standard spectacle and another with nearly ten French songs. The third finally, less complex, for the stages with a regular scene at an end of the enclosure. It is that which we will see tomorrow in Pretoria.
King recognizes it, it usually works with its team, her lighting engineer, his hairdresser, his designer. Precisely, three weeks ago, Céline claimed her designer Annie Horth who had to pedal to create his costumes of scene.
"Celine has worked with some of these people for 20 years, it is almost a family, concedes King. Therefore, yes, my approach of work and collaboration is very different for the first time for a long time."
- does That occur to your taste?
- If I had to collaborate with somebody, that would be with this team. They are so nice, authentic, open. And they were thirsty for new ideas, of original material.

Yeah but in the other video everything is live. Live versions of TPOL, TLYM, IACBTMN...you can tell everything is live because a lot of the songs are mostly music and Celine just sings bits now and then. She seems to be saving her voice.
