Bride-to-be Andrea looks relaxed as she tunes up for big day

Andrea Corr is all smiles as she and husband-to-be Brett Desmond leave the church at Miltown Malbay, Co Clare after final rehearsals yesterday for their wedding today

By Jason O'Brien
Friday August 21 2009

PRACTICE makes perfect.

Singer Andrea Corr held a 40-minute wedding rehearsal in a church in a picturesque Clare village last night as part of the last-minute preparations for her big day.

But locals in Miltown Malbay hoping to catch a glimpse of the petite singer in her frock, or her stockbroker fiance Brett Desmond, entering or exiting St Joseph's church today may be disappointed.

As part of the rehearsal last night, the drivers of the three black Mercedes cars that brought the wedding party also carried large purple umbrellas, which they used to shield the guests -- including Brett's billionaire businessman father, Dermot -- from prying eyes.

It is expected that those umbrellas will be extensively used today, although the couple are not thought to have signed any exclusive deals with magazines for rights to the wedding.

Once inside last night, however, the mood lightened considerably.

"They were all absolutely lovely, no airs or graces, and she (Andrea) looks lovely," one very young man with the inside track told the Irish Independent.

The party smiled and waved as they left the church shortly before 7pm, and the bride-to-be rolled down her car window and accepted the congratulations of a small group of locals who had gathered outside the front gate.

"Thank you, thank you very much," she smiled.

The 35-year-old, along with her sisters Caroline and Sharon, and brother Jim, arrived in West Clare yesterday.

Among those in the Desmond party at the rehearsal last night was Brett's brother Ross, who will be his best man, and his sister Zoe.

Security

The wedding party has the nearby Doonbeg golf resort and spa completely booked out for the weekend, with extra security drafted in to ensure privacy.

Rumours of attendees at the lavish reception tonight include the possibility of a performance by U2, close friends of Ms Corr. The band played Sheffield last night and are due to play Cardiff tomorrow night as part of their world tour, but are not scheduled to perform anywhere else tonight.

Locals said that triple-major winning golfer Padraig Harrington was also in Doonbeg yesterday, although it was not clear if he was attending the wedding. A number of churches in the area had been tipped for the vows, but it became clear that St Joseph's had been chosen when engineers installed sound equipment including speakers, amplifiers and a large mixing desk there yesterday afternoon. It is thought that Ms Corr's siblings will sing at the ceremony.

Whoohoo! Go Andy! :D

Over 400 guests turned out today for the marriage of singer Andrea Corr and her husband Brett Desmond, son of the billionaire financier Dermot Desmond, in Co Clare.

The wedding, which has been billed as one of Irish society’s weddings of the decade attracted luminaries from the world of music and sport to Saint Joseph’s Church Miltown Malbay.

Hundreds of locals ringed the picturesque hilltop church overlooking the Atlantic to catch a glimpse of the wedding party and guests as they arrived.

A fleet of white buses brought the early guests from the Doonbeg Golf and Spa resort where the reception will take place this evening.

Among them were the golfer Padraig Harrington and his wife Caroline, former Celtic managers Gordon Strachan and Martin O’Neill – Dermot Desmond is a major shareholder in Celtic – the comedian Patrick Kielty and MCD promoter Denis Desmond and his wife Caroline. Later businessman John Magnier arrived along with JP McManus and his wife Pat.

The father of the groom arrived with his wife 20 minutes before the ceremony was due to start and posed for photographs at the church gate.

U2 lead singer Bono and his wife Ali turned up in a black Maserati at 2.35pm, five minutes after the scheduled start of the wedding.

However, the biggest cheer of the day was reserved for the bride who arrived at the church wearing a white strapless Vera Wang dress. She was greeted by her older sister Sharon who along with the other two bridesmaids, Caroline Corr and Zoe Desmond – sister of the groom – wore slate-grey bridesmaids' dresses.

The reception will take place a 10 minute drive away at Doonbeg Golf and Spa resort later this evening.

It's a beautiful day as Bono and the boys make it to Andrea's wedding
DASH: U2 put 360 tour on hold for a more important engagement

By Lisa Marie Berry
Friday August 21 2009

Blushing bride Andrea Corr received an extra special wedding gift when close friend Bono made it to the Church on time.

There had been fears that the U2 frontman would not be able to attend the nuptials of Andrea and Brett Desmond because of work commitments -- but the singer pulled out all the stops to ensure he was there for her big day.

U2 are currently wowing British fans on the UK leg of their 360 tour and a source explained that Bono faced a "very tight window of time" to make it from the wedding in time for his next concert performance. The band were due in Sheffield tonight.

However, Bono was determined to make the celebrations and all members of the band have jetted in for Andrea's big day.

Today is a double celebration for Bono who also celebrates his 20th wedding anniversary with Ali Hewson.

"He's delighted that he is able to make it," said a source close to the band.

And Andrea's brother Jim revealed: "All the members of U2 are coming."

But he added: "I read that Bono might be performing -- it's the first I have heard of it."

And he added the family has no plans to perform.

"I'd say I'll be launching into a couple of pints at the bar.

"We will be taking a day of from work. After all, it is the last girl in the band to get married."

Jim said he could not be happier that his beautiful little sister is marrying one of his best friends Brett Desmond -- who is the son of billionaire Dermot Desmond.

He said: "I've known Brett longer than Andrea. He's a very good friend and is such a lovely guy."

Last night, the wedding party was brought to the Church in three Mercedes.

Andrea beamed for waiting cameras and she and her husband-to-be had a dry run for their big day.

Security

However, well-wishers and celebrity spotters look set to be disappointed, with massive security in place to keep the happy couple and their guests away from prying eyes.

However, locals in Miltown Malbay are smitten with the couple, with one local saying: "They were all absolutely lovely, no airs or graces, and she (Andrea) looks lovely."

The blushing bride rolled down her window to accept congratulations from a group of well wishers that gathered on the Church grounds.

Who wants to marry a billionaire? Blushing bride Andrea Corr weds stockbroker fiancé

A glowing Andrea Corr was all smiles in County Clare, Ireland today as she married her billionaire fiancé Brett Desmond.

The Corrs frontwoman, 35, looked stunning in her strapless cream Vera Wang dress and veil as she arrived accompanied by her bridesmaids, sisters Sharon and Caroline Corr and Brett's sister Zoe.

The beaming bride waved to hundreds of locals from the village of Miltown Malbay who gathered on the streets to see Andrea arriving at St Joseph's Church a hilltop church with views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The 5'1" singer also gave herself a height boost with a huge pair of white platform sandals to reach her tall new husband.

Andrea traditionally arrived late for the star-studded ceremony, which took place in the 19th century stone church before moving on to the nearby Doonbeg golf resort for the reception.

The couple have booked out the whole resort and drafted in heavy security to protect their big day.

Among the 400 guests was U2 rocker Bono and his wife Ali Hewson, comedian Patrick Kielty, Scottish football manager Gordon Strachan and Irish golfer Padraig Harrington.

Oldest Corr sibling Jim, 45, insisted the group wouldn't be performing on the big day, although he had heard rumours that U2 were.

Jim told the Irish Herald: 'I'd say I'll be launching into a couple of pints at the bar. We will be taking a day of from work. After all, it is the last girl in the band to get married.

'I've known Brett longer than Andrea. He's a very good friend and is such a lovely guy.'

U2 performed in Sheffield on Thursday, but made a flying visit to Clare to perform at the wedding before returning to Britain for their Cardiff concert on Saturday night.

The Corrs are old friends with Bono, who attended the Majorca wedding of Caroline and husband Frank Woods in 2002.

Andrea and Brett started dating two years ago and became engaged in the Barbados last Christmas.

Brett proposed to Andrea with a £60,000 diamond ring at his father's five star Sandy Lane Hotel.

Brett's father is one Ireland's most successful entrepreneurs and is the largest shareholder of Celtic FC.

He previously owned London City Airport, which he sold two years ago for a reported £1.2billion and also had an estimated 2-3 per cent stake in Manchester United, which he sold to Malcolm Glazer in 2005.

Prior to meeting Brett, Andrea dated Irish actor Shaun Evans for four years and her former manager Giles Baxendale in the early Noughties.

Already a proud auntie to Caroline's children Jake, Georgina and Rihann, Sharon's kids Cathal and Flori and Jim's son Brandon, Andrea is looking forward to starting a family.

She said: 'The girls and Jim and their children intensify that (broody) feeling, as I love them so much my heart hurts.

'I want to have children, and I want to give them that same sense of security that my parents gave me. That's what I'm looking forward to.'

You can also stay in touch with Andrea on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
I really love the new song!! It seems fresh but also really old fashioned, like it could have been something from the 60's. Very excited for the new album!!!

I really like it actually, I think it's much better than Ten Feet High. My favourites are Blue Bayou, Pale Blue Eyes and No 9 Dream. Plus I think Some Things Last A Long Time is really nicely done as the final track. Plus I think her vocals are really strong at the moment, some of the live promo stuff has been great! I would love it to be successful but I don't expect it will be a massive hit which is a shame.

I still think overall I prefer the format of Sharon's album, with the instrumentals and the nod to the Corrs stuff and the classic instruments etc but (don't shoot me) I sometimes find Sharon's voice a bit annoying at times. So if Andrea did some of Sharon's songs I think it would be perfect!

I like it too! My favs are Blue Bayou & Pale Blue Eyes (has been on repeat for a week now lol) and They Don't Know. And I've just listened to her version of 'You've Got A Friend' (special bonus track) and I really really love it!

It's not an album I would be constantly playing, but quality wise...it's good!

And yeah her vocals are quite strong... and she seems to enjoy herself much more now. I was stunned by how much control she has now with this performance of 'Pale Blue Eyes':

Lol yeah Sharon's album is much closer to The Corrs.... btw she's doing a small tour in the UK soon...some dates have already been announced (and I think on sale)... :D I get ya.... she has a 'nasal' sound... there's only so much Sharon I can listen lol

Can't wait for The Corrs to tour again and incorporate some of their solo stuff in the show!
