About 10 seconds of new To Love You More video from her show.  :in_love:  :w00t:  also a few seconds of old Fever footage.

Ugh! :glare: All that boring business stuff for an hour, and all we got was 30 seconds of old footage. Well, it wouldn't be the first time, right? :ermm:

SHOW: CNBC on Assignment: Las Vegas, Inc. 8:00 AM EST CNBC

August 11, 2005 Thursday

956 words

Las Vegas striving for a new monopoly, entertainment

DYLAN RATIGAN

Announcer: CNBC ON ASSIGNMENT: LAS VEGAS, INC. now continues with Dylan Ratigan.

DYLAN RATIGAN, host:

In the '50s, '60s and '70s, Las Vegas had a near monopoly on gambling. Now there's a casino within a hundred miles of almost every major American city. But Vegas is striving for a new monopoly...

(Footage of Elton John performing)

RATIGAN: ...its ever-growing arsenal of stage shows, four-star restaurants, high-end shops and performances from world-renowned entertainers.

(Footage of unidentified performer)

Mr. STEVE WYNN: Entertainment, with a small `e,' which means all forms of it, is the lifeblood of the city. Take that away from this city and you got a box of rooms and slot machines, and you're in trouble.

RATIGAN: Last year, non-gaming revenue in Las Vegas' home county reached $25 billion, the largest it's ever been. Every year, tourists are spending less time on the casino floor gambling; today, on average, less than four hours per day during the average four-day stay.

Mr. DANIELE LAMARRE (Cirque du Soleil President): In the past, people were talking about London. People were talking about New York City. Today, this is the capital of the world of entertainment.

(Footage of Cirque du Soleil performance)

RATIGAN: Cirque du Soleil is the biggest earner of the Las Vegas stage shows. In two decades, the Montreal-based traveling troupe has gone from a small band of street performers to 11 shows across four continents.

Unidentified Man #1: Please welcome Daniele Lamarre.

RATIGAN: Daniele Lamarre is the company's president.

Mr. LAMARRE: I have to share with you guys where we are as an organization. We're not the kind of organization that likes corporate bull (censored).

RATIGAN: Once a year he travels to Vegas to meet with everyone involved in the production.

Mr. LAMARRE: I said, look, I've seen this show, many, many, many times, but I thought that night was the best.

RATIGAN: Las Vegas is one of just two cities in the world to host a resident Cirque show. Orlando, the top tourist destination in America, has one. The Vegas Strip boasts four.

Mr. LAMARRE: You see it everywhere.

Unidentified Woman: You see the logo everywhere, so we don't want to change this logo. We think it's too crucial.

Mr. LAMARRE: No, no, no. It's too power...

Unidentified Woman: There's a lot of equity in it.

Mr. LAMARRE: It's too, too powerful.

RATIGAN: You're watching Cirque's marketing team as they plot their next campaign.

Unidentified Woman: So we're going to completely overhaul all of the materials...

Mr. LAMARRE: Mm-hmm.

Unidentified: The marquee, the billboards. We're launching an Internet campaign, television campaign for the first time. We're going to have a branding campaign.

Mr. LAMARRE: Wow.

RATIGAN: Cirque's success creates an unusual challenge: how to sell four shows all performing within a two-mile radius.

Unidentified Woman: The whole intent is to market each of them as a unique entertainment experience.

Mr. LAMARRE: Right.

RATIGAN: Each of the Cirque shows has one thing in common.

Mr. LAMARRE: I think I can really sum up in two words: Sold out.

RATIGAN: Five nights a week, two times each night, Cirque fills more than three million seats every year in Las Vegas. Consider, then, an average hundred-dollar ticket price; do a little simple math, and you'll find Cirque is bringing in $300 million in ticket sales alone. And once this show is over, another cash infusion takes place as thousands flow out of the theaters and onto the casino floor, ready to place more bets.

(Footage of Celine Dion performance)

RATIGAN: Like Cirque, Celine Dion sells out. And every time she does, more than $150,000 is pumped into Caesars casinos, shops and eateries.

(Footage of Celine Dion performance)

RATIGAN: Spectacle is everywhere in Las Vegas. Here at Aureole restaurant, wine angels scale a four-story tower that houses 10,000 bottles of wine.

Mr. ANDREW BRADBURY (Aureole Wine Director): You know, you're looking at nearly a $2 million structure before a bottle of wine is into it. Believe it or not, we probably have more people coming to this restaurant to look at the wine angels or who've heard about the wine angels than any other factor.

RATIGAN: Last year, visitors spent almost $9 billion on dining in the Las Vegas area. Shopping comes next, approaching $5 billion. High-end shops, from Chanel and Dior to Louis Vuitton and Manolo Blahnik, add prestige and glamour to the resorts.

Victoria's Secret is trying to capitalize on this shopping boom, building a new flagship store in the forum shops at Caesars Palace. They're turning this retail store into an entertainment show of sorts.

Mr. JON JOHNSON (Limited Brands Vice President of Merchandising and Design): We're going to take the customer on a ride as they come into the store, taking them from behind the scenes right out onto the runway of a fashion show.

RATIGAN: These forum shops are no Boise strip mall. They boast one of the highest revenues per square foot of any shopping center in the country; billions of dollars, millions of square feet, thousands of restaurants and shops, and all of it riding on one thing: getting people in the door. Vegas pitchman Billy Vassiliadis knows this town, with increasing traffic and spiraling cab lines, has never had more to lose.

Mr. BILLY VASSILIADIS (Vegas Pitchman): The biggest risk we have, honestly, is if we're not careful and we somehow make the experience burdensome. If we do that, then we're not the escape anymore and then we're not free anymore.

Announcer: Coming up next, can this gaming mecca keep the good times rolling?

RATIGAN: How do you plan on getting the five million visitors in five years?

Announcer: What will it take to keep the town on top? When CNBC ON ASSIGNMENT: LAS VEGAS, INC. continues.
