Indulge in some "true patriot love" this Canada Day!

(Jun 24, 2005)

Canada Day is just around the corner. As you plan your festivities, Bits&Bites and Crispers have some fun Canadian facts you can share with friends and family. Did you know that this year marks the 125th anniversary of the first public performance of O Canada? To celebrate this milestone in Canada's heritage, Bits&Bites and Crispers surveyed Canadians to learn more about what their national anthem means to them.

The survey results revealed that more than half of Canadians (68 per cent) favoured the phrases "The True North strong and free" and "God keep our land glorious and free". As one proud Canadian, Christian McPhee, commented, "These lines most represent what it means to be Canadian." Sporting events such as hockey games were cited as Canadians' favourite place to sing O Canada with school being listed as the second favourite place. Other singing locations included the Olympic games and where we all sound the best - the shower!

And which Canadian celebrity was picked as Canadians' favourite talent to sing O Canada? Actor Mike Myers and singers Celine Dion and Avril Lavigne topped the list with a whopping total of 78 percent of the vote. Other famous Canadians of note were Kiefer Sutherland, Gordon Lightfoot and alternative rockers Sum 41. The most original answer received by the Bits&Bites and Crispers survey team was a duet of O Canada performed by Mike Myers and Jim Carrey...imagine that!

In addition, the survey produced some light-hearted and amusing versions of O Canada lyrics like "We stand in the garden with geese" (given to the survey team by a three year old Tara Hutchingame.)

Originally composed in French by Calixa LavallÈe and Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier, O Canada was first performed in Quebec City on June 24, 1880 to coincide with the St. Jean-Baptiste Day celebrations. However, it wasn't until 100 years later on July 1, 1980 that O Canada became our country's official national anthem!

Céline is truly the biggest canadian star so it's normal to be the most choosen.

I wonder what this boring kid Lavigne is doing on the list :glare:

Celine is not the biggest Canadian star. Only her fans would think so. But I would LOVE to hear what Jim Carrey would do with the anthem. The other songs I've heard him sing are priceless!! Besides, we've already heard Celine do a normal, blah blah ballad version of O Canada.

Celine is the biggest Canadian star, and most known one in the world, at least in singers.

Trust me, Celine is not the biggest Canadian star. The biggest Canadian singer, perhaps, but not the biggest star. I live here, I see our entertainment shows...she's not the one we talk about the most.

of course, cause she moved to Vegas. :P and she hasn't many topic to talk about on tabloids. but I still believe she's the must well known Canadian star in the world.

Yeah, but even when she's doing something, she isn't in the news as much as Shania, or even Avril. I'd say she's probably the most successful Canadian export and maybe more people around the world know her, but in Canada, we don't personally consider her 'the national treasure' or anything of the sort, unless you're a fan. I think America does more about her than even her own country, with the exception of Quebec, but the Celine in Quebec is not the same as the English Celine.

Exactly. We can talk about a lot of people on TV and radio and they turn out to be insignificant. Céline is the most sucessful. She is the biggest selling artist of all times, how could not be the Canadian national treasure?

I have many relatives in Canada (most of them are not really big Céline fans) but they say she is the national treasure.

Wherever Céline goes everyone knows she is Canadian, Céline even promoted turism in Canada and I don't see others doing it.

I totally agree with you. She can't be on TV, on the news all the time.... well, as it was said, she doesn't have many subject to tabloids etc because she is humble, she is like everybody else. She doesn't need the media to bring her attention. Anyway..she doesn't need to be on TV, on the news..magzines etc but she surelly is the most well known singer from Canada. Everybody knows Celine, most people know she is from Canada, she promotes Canada wherever she goes... anyway... she is very well known as a canadian, as a singer.. etc :)

I suppose you're right in the common social sense, and I suppose my argument comes from a personal belief. I don't believe there is any such thing as a national treasure. No one is that important above the rest. Success isn't measured by how many records you've sold. In the 'Greatest Canadian' list (which was just as ridiculous) Celine wasn't even near the top ten, so she's not as high in the Canadian consciousness as many people would believe.

Success (money) doesn't equal level of fame. Ask a Shania fan and they will say she's the most famous Canadian. Ask a Trekkie and they'll say William Shatner is the most famous. Ask a movie nut and they'll tell you it's Jim Carrey or Mike Myers. It's completely non-objective. Of course if you watch a Celine biography they'll say she's a National Treasure...they would about anyone. Oh, and I've met a few Americans who had no idea Celine was Canadian.

It's dead end street telling a Celine forum she isn't on top of the world. I'd be more successful hanging myself!! I'm done, 'cause this thread is depressing me. YIKES!! All I know is that Celine will never be on any pedestals...I don't believe in them. But for the rest of the world, I'm sure you're all completely right.

Yup, let's put this to rest.. it's subjective. Jim Carrey doing the national anthem would be really funny.  :D

if he duet with Mike Myers, it'll be even funnier. :rofl_2:

Has anyone here heard Jim Carrey doing "I Am The Walrus" or "You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch?" Those are two of the best things I've ever heard. He's actually got a very clear, very powerful voice and can definitely shake things up in a way people wouldn't expect. I'd vote for him.

that's so ridiculous!I personally like Jim but plz he is not a singer! i dont know why it started all this but i'm glad to see VanMerlin discussing and for sure VanMerlin's opinion about Celine doesnt rappresent all the Canadian people, that she/he is a canadian doesnt mean she/he knows all about candian tastes.Since I'm a fan i met many Canadian citizens, they all told me that celine was a kind of icon for them :bye1:
