TORONTO -- Canadian songstress Celine Dion, Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte and Quebec cable giant Quebecor Media have emerged as potential bidders for the Montreal Canadiens NHL team.

 

Quebec broadcaster Radio-Canada said Wednesday that the Bank of Montreal has signed confidentiality agreements with 10 potential suitors who have until 5 p.m. Thursday to submit formal bids to 80% majority owner George Gillett, a Denver-based sports team and events promoter.

 

Other interested parties include U.S. investment firm Spectrum Equity, Montreal businessman Stephen Bronfman of Claridge Investments, a cousin of WMG chairman and CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr., and the Caisse de depot et placement, a provincial pension fund giant.

 

Besides picking up the Canadiens hockey team, a possible buyer will acquire the Bell Center arena in Montreal and a concert promotion division.

 

Besides the Canadiens, Gillett also owns Richard Petty Motorsports and the Liverpool soccer club in Britain.

Imagine, all the hockey game are sold out and all the show in Center Bell, that's why it can be interesting for René to acquire that, and We don't want a USA Buyer or for other parts of the world the Canadian it's quebecer so we want a quebecer buyer. So confused.

I read ages ago that people were speculating that they may buy it. Then I read that Rene said they weren't interested. Now he allegedly is interested again?

But that's not even the confusing part, how do you own a team? Like, do you own the people, or the equipment or the place where they play? (Hockey is that thing with the sticks on the ice, right?) Would it be very time consuming, would they have to make a lot of decisions or something? Hmm. I know nothing about sports lol.

I would think that this would be a conflict of interests. Rene with his heart problem doe not need the added stress of managing two big stars. Celine has always wanted Rene to be close by especially when touring and then there is the gambling factor. I truly think this just might cause a ripple in the future of their marriage. All things like this look good at first. Why is this guy selling the team? I would look closely at the books and all aspects involved with the team. Is this the reason why Rene's partner has left Feeling Productions? Is Rene and Celine using their own money in the bank or is it being funded by their Feeling Productions Inc. which might have more share holders. I know it is not my business, I'm just concerned that a venture like this could hurt them more than help.

You buy a team, you select the best players...a winning team is worth many $$$, because of commercial activities, because of the games they play for audiences, not to mention television rights. I think another important part of this is the Bell Centre. It would be available at their command....future plans in Montréal? It won't be long now until they own entire Québec

Yeah, it's mostly about business really. And René loves hockey, so owning a team could be his new hobby. Plus it's their hometown team. That brings the glory to Montréal when they do well, which is always good for the city. And of course the owner gets some of that glory as well, and Céline gets mentioned too, which is never bad. Also, I dunno if it would really be much work for the owner. There are president, vice president, managers, coaches and about a million people to do the work and the owner probably "just" funds the team and appears at certain occasions and stuff like that so I dunno if it would add much stress to their lives, just a little something on the side to make some extra cash!

Ok now I hope they don't do this I can see how the added stress wouldn't be good... but I think it's a little far fetched to assume it'd cause problems in the future of their marriage. I'm sure Rene wouldn't make a huge decision like that without Celine agreeing to it. And I guess they could always re-sell it at some point if it didn't work out, right?

To own something doesn't necessarily mean you have to manage it.... It's completely possible the only thing that is noticable/going to chance is that their autograph is on a piece of paper and that's it. René doesn't have to interfere at all....there are other people doing that..

My sister just said something to me about this in a text but I didn't believe her because she likes to trick me on Celine stuff but I guess it's true!!!!! This is awesome. Maybe they will have jerseys with her signature on it or something if this goes through. Exciting!!!!!

Well, I think this makes sense for them and may be a good investment. One of Celine and Rene's close friends is Pierre LaCroix and his wife. They are involved with Colorado's hockey team. So perhaps he will help Rene if their offer is accepted.

Not for me! I'm from New England...the Bruins and the Canadiens have been rivals for years! There is much hatred between the two teams. We played them last night and there was a penalty for fighting every 2 minutes! Celine can't own this team! That would be the same as if she owned the Yankees! (Go Red Sox! )

Montreal is my favourite hockey team and the best one out there. It would be great if she bought the team...maybe my husband would like the team since he's a Toronto fan and Toronto Maple Leafs' fans hate the Montreal Canadians. Maybe there is hope yet
