Tal Posted April 28, 2007 at 07:21 PM Posted April 28, 2007 at 07:21 PM I'm going to Montreal next weekend and I wanted to know all the Celine places I should visit and where they are (if you know). For example, the church she got married in, the famous Celine globe, and that store that they used for the JNVOP video. And of course anything else you can think of! Thanks in advance Quote I live my life like a runawayI hide my dreams in a special placeI'm waiting here for my prince to comeTo save me from the darkness...
stevethefan Posted April 28, 2007 at 08:15 PM Posted April 28, 2007 at 08:15 PM Montreal is a beautiful and fun city to visit. I've been there many times, I go there about once a year and I always look forward to the trip. It's one of my favorite cities. The church Celine got married in, Notre Dame, isright in the middle of old Montreal (vieux Montreal). You should go to that area anyway since it looks like a European village. In downtown Montreal you could visit some of the theatres where she has sang in the past. One of them is called Place des Arts. It's a complex for theatre and arts and I know she used to sing there, probably before she made it huge, before playing arenas. It's located on St Catherine street, which is one of the main and most famous streets. You could also try to find the theatre where taped the video for " Je ne vous oublie pas", although you'd have to research that. The big Centre Bell arena is also downtown, and that's where she has played more recently, like the Millenium concert. Even though I've been to Montreal many times I still have not visited the suburb she grew up in, which is right on the outskirts of town. I've driven by it, but I still have not gone there. Montreal has a great subway system, called the Metro, and you may be able to get to it that way but I'm not sure. The subway is probably the cleanest I've ever seen. Because of the cold winters, Montreal has this huge connected underground filled with restaurants and stores. It's sort of like a huge, interconnected mall. Luckily you are going at a good time of year so the weather should be nicer. There are many outdoor cafes and restaurants downtown and it's just fun to walk around. In the summer there are festivals every few weeks, like the Jazz festival, Just for laughs comedy,Cinema festivals. It's cool because the downtown is filled with people and it's really fun. Those start in June. Other places to visit are the Latin quarter, which is in the Rue Denis area. It's kind a college, bohemian area. There's a cool little Chinatown which is near old Montreal. One time I was walking around near my hotel and I noticed this Berlitz language office and I remembered seeing that in one of the documentary's where they were showing how she was learning English, so that wasgreat to see. I'm sure there are other Celine places someone else may know. Sorry for the long post. You'll have a great time! Quote
Tal Posted April 28, 2007 at 09:04 PM Author Posted April 28, 2007 at 09:04 PM Thanks for all the info!! I'm going with my family, and there's only so many Celine related activities they'll tolerate so I think Charlemegne is out of the question, lol. Plus we're only there for the weekend, so I want to stay and explore the city. stevethefan Posted April 28, 2007 at 09:35 PM Posted April 28, 2007 at 09:35 PM You should have great time over the weekend. Montreal is the perfect sized city and you can have fun just wandering around. If you go into any of the "Nickels" restaurants you can have the Celine chocolate cake!I did that once. Have fun! Quote
Tal Posted April 28, 2007 at 09:54 PM Author Posted April 28, 2007 at 09:54 PM Isn't she disassociated with Nickles now? I just love that it has that European feel, but its so close (I live in NYC so its a 6 hour drive). I'm excited!! What do you think the chances are that a music store will already have D'elles?? Quote I live my life like a runawayI hide my dreams in a special placeI'm waiting here for my prince to comeTo save me from the darkness...
stevethefan Posted April 28, 2007 at 10:50 PM Posted April 28, 2007 at 10:50 PM (edited) They may have "D'elles" in the stores up there, but I think the release date is for later in May. A few years I bought the "On ne change" video up there. I think it had just come out. I also saw a Dion family Christmas CD,without Celine that I should have bought but didn't. I always look in the music stores. I think I bought "D'eaux"up there way back in the mid nineties. Sometimes I buy other french-canadian artists CD's. There are alot of good singers/bands in that province. I also noticed that you could get the "For Keeps" book in French and it hada different cover on it, which is the same b/w picture as on "On ne change pas." You are fairly close being in NY. You just drive north on I87 (I think?). I'm originally from Mass. and when I lived there I would just drive to Montreal. It's weird because even though it's close to the US and it resembles a US city it really does have this European feeling to it. It's the best of both worlds. The exchange rate used to be better. I remember a few years back I would get $1.40 CDN for $1.00 US. It was great because you could reallyget a great deal with shopping /eating/hotel. It was like getting free extra money. Now that has changed, so a Canadian dollar is closer in value to a US dollar. With regards to "Nickels" you may be right. I'm not sure if she's still involved with it, or as much but when I was in one of them in 2004 they still had a picture of her near the door and they had the "Celine" chocolate cake. On one of the Celine documentaries, probably from the early nineties they showed how some of her family was managing one of the restaurants and they showed her mother and brother working! I know that's not true anymore. Edited April 28, 2007 at 10:57 PM by stevethefan Quote
Tal Posted April 29, 2007 at 04:52 PM Author Posted April 29, 2007 at 04:52 PM Yeah, they have the French version of ONCP at the boutique in Vegas. I think I'm going to get Marc Dupre's album, and the A L'Olympia album cause thats the only CD of Celine's I don't have. Maybe I'll get some singles though...like SNRQ or Immensite if they have it by then. I want to go to that store that they used in the JNVOP which supposedly has tons of Celine memorebilia. I think the exchange rate now is like 1.12 to the dollar so its basically nothing. I don't know where her Globo is ... cause I remember it was in Charlemagne when I went there in 2001 but I read that the city couldnt keep it cause it's such a small city and they don't have money (as the winter in canada is very cold) etc. Enjoy Montreal, it's a gorgeous city, I love it! I agree with everything Steve said as far as things to do. I was sad.. I went to 3 archambaults (music store) and not one of them had anything I didn't have. No new singles and no sign of D'elles (although you will hear advertisements for that D'elles tv special on tv and the radio ). Hearing SNRQ on the radio is fun, too! lol. I'm pretty sure she has nothing to do with Nickels now, but I still go there every time. They still have her cds and pictures on the walls when you walk in and stuff... and the menus seem pretty new and still have her pictured on the gift certificates on the back. and they still have "gâteau céline" although I didn't have time to get a piece this time I think the Imperial Theater from JNVOP is between Ste-Catherine and Maisonneuve on Rue de Bleury. I meant to go there and pretend to be Celine walking in (hah), but I totally forgot It should be right by the Place Des Arts metro station.. very easy to get to. I was staying two blocks away and seriously probably walked by it not paying attention. ahhhh. Have a great time! Quote facebook / twitter

It was a bit of a culture shock when I first moved here. My friends and I used to say "wicked" all through elementry school and I was saying up until my freshman year in college where I picked up a Long Island accent really fast. When I would go home to MA in the summer and stuff people gave me so much crap for saying stuff like I`ll "cawell ya lata" lol. And friends at college thought I was wierd for saying wicked and calling a subway sandwhich a 'grinder' instead of a 'hero'. lol. stevethefan Posted May 3, 2007 at 01:11 AM Posted May 3, 2007 at 01:11 AM Ah those regional differences. Where I lived they still call a big sandwich a "grinder" but I think that's only western Mass. In NY they call it a "sub" and Philadelphia it's a "hero." I think nowadays most people call them "subs" everywhere, especially with the popularity of the Subway restaurant chain. Soda is kind of like that too.In Boston, they used to call it "tonic", although I think that older generation is almost gone now. "Do you want a tonic?" Kind of weird. In the midwest they call it "pop." Quote
