Who creates the tracklisting?

Since one of the topics here is about the tracklisting of ATW, I started wondering who decides which song gets on an album. Celine, Rene, the producers, songwriters, Sony? All of them?

I'm talking about regular albums...

But what about compilations? Some artists had compilations for which tracks were selected by famous music critics...(Celine could do that too once she decides it's time for another compilation, say after a few more studio albums... :msn-wink: ) What about Celine's compilations (ATW and ONCP)?

I recall something about The Collector's Series, that those were the songs Celine liked but that didn't get o ATW....

So what is the main factor with compilations: popularity, artist's personal favourites, etc.?

I don't know for sure, but I guess that everybody chooses together... Céline picks the songs she likes, Réne evaluates, Sony sees if they're gonna be good-sellers... There are many different angles through which you can look... Maybe Sometimes Céline's choice is not the same Sony would choose, sometimes the songs Sony likes Réne doesn't, or Réne thinks Céline should record "X" but Céline prefers "Y"... I don't know... I guess it's more of a group work than only one trying to make things right...

I agree with Elaine. It's probably more of a compromise. Mostly likely Celine picks the songs she likes and records them, then René filters everything out and narrows the number of songs down a bit, then Sony takes THOSE songs, and narrows it down again for the finished product. Another thing I've always wondered about the tracklist is who decides the order.

I think this job is done by the record producer or mixer. They have to listen to the album and figure out how to blend each track into each other without it being too jarring. It would sound weird if a person just got done listening to "My Heart Will Go On," and then all of a sudden "J'irai où tu iras" started. The album has to be enjoyable to listen to, and not something that's going to startle the listener (unless you're listening to a heavy metal, rap, or heavy rock album.)
