Celine Sings 'Nouvelle-France' Theme Song

November 3, 2004

 

Celine has recorded the theme song of the French-Québécois blockbuster 'Nouvelle-France.' Luc Plamondon wrote the lyrics for the song, titled "Ma Nouvelle-France." The movie will hit the screens on November 19. The soundtrack will be released on November 23 but you'll be able to listen to the single on the radio as early as next week.

Next Monday, there will be the red carpet for Nouvelle-France premiere in Montreal. Maybe Céline will be there.

 

Next week, TQS will dedicate a special to the film and they will show the complete recording session of the track "Ma Nouvelle-France" in a studio in Las Vegas.

 

I hope JP could cap it.

MONTREAL, 19 nov (AFP) - 19/11/2004 17h06 - "Nouvelle-France", une vaste fresque historique réunissant des acteurs québécois et français (Gérard Depardieu, Irène Jacob et Vincent Perez), est sorti vendredi en première mondiale dans la province francophone, avant d'être distribué en février-mars en France et en Grande-Bretagne.

 

Déjà surnommé le "Titanic québécois" par la presse en raison de son coût, le film a nécessité un budget de 33 millions de dollars canadiens (27 millions de dollars américains environ), ce qui en fait la plus grosse production jamais tournée au Québec.

 

Financé à 65% par des fonds canadiens, 25% britanniques et 10% français, le film a pour arrière-plan les derniers jours de la Nouvelle-France avec la prise en main de la province par la couronne anglaise.

 

L'intrigue est vaguement inspirée de l'histoire authentique de La Coriveau, une femme convaincue de sorcellerie et condamnée à mort au Québec au début du régime anglais, vers le milieu du XVIIIème siècle.

 

Tournage en français et en anglais, 3.000 figurants, extérieurs au Québec, en Nouvelle-Ecosse, en France et en Grande-Bretagne, thème musical chanté par Céline Dion... le film vise les marchés internationaux.

 

Depardieu en curé maléfique, Tim Roth en Premier ministre anglais, William Pitt ou Vincent Perez en intendant perruqué entourent une distribution québécoise centrée sur les amours contrariées de Marie-Loup Carignan (Noémie Godin-Vigneau), une jeune veuve indépendante et de François Le Gardeur (David La Haye), bourgeois intellectuel et aventurier.

 

Le film est né de la persévérance du producteur québécois Richard Goudreau, qui a mis six ans à faire aboutir son projet et a investi une grosse partie des fonds qu'il a amassés au Canada grâce au succès de la trilogie "Les Boys", comédie sur la passion canadienne pour le hockey-sur-glace.

I think "Ma Nouvelle France" refers to Canada - at least the French part of Canada (ie. Quebec) - which they called Nouvelle France - or New France. But the English beat the French, and so gained possession of North America and Canada (really one continuous country - just artifically partitioned by the colonialists).
